About

Richard III: A Crown of Roses, A Crown of Thorns

ABOUT KAREN GRIEBLING-
Karen Griebling, b. 1957, holds the position Professor of Music at Hendrix College where she conducts the Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra and teaches music theory, composition, viola, and world music. She plays viola with the internationally acclaimed Cross Town Trio and is a tenured member of the viola section of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.

A native of Akron, Ohio and a member of a musical family in which both of her parents, her sister and niece are composers, Griebling began her early training with her mother, Mary Ann Griebling, and later enrolled in the preparatory program of the Cleveland Institute of Music with Marie Martin at the age of four. She spent several of her early years in England before returning to Ohio and resuming her formal training in composition, viola, piano, voice and bassoon.  Her early compositions attracted the attention of Vincent Persichetti, Howard Hanson, Grace Cushman, and others through her early successes in national composition competitions.

Griebling came to Conway, Arkansas in 1987 after earning a DMA in composition from the University of Texas at Austin ’86 under the guidance of Donald Grantham, MM from the University of Houston ’82 under the guidance of Michael Horvit and Carlisle Floyd, and BM from the Eastman School of Music ’80 under the guidance of Samuel Adler, Warren Benson and Joseph Shwantner. She played viola professionally in the Houston Ballet Orchestra, Texas Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Principal of the Corpus Christi Symphony and Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Berkshire Symphony, and Albany (NY) Symphony.  She was guided in her viola training by Akron Symphony Principal Violist Samuel Spinak, Edward Ormond of the Cleveland Orchestra, Francis Tursi at the Eastman School of Music, Milton Katims and Lawrence Wheeler at the University of Houston, and Donald Wright at the University of Texas, and she participated in master-classes with Walter Trampler, Karen Tuttle, and members of the Budapest Quartet.

Griebling was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant to participate in a workshop on computer music technology at Dartmouth College with Jon Appleton, and the OMTA Composer of the Year for Ohio in 1987. She has been a featured composer at the New Hampshire Music Festival (’86 and ’87), Wichita State University New Music Festival (three times) at the invitation of Katherine Murdock, the University of Houston at the invitation of Michael Horvit with guest composer Stephen Montague, the University of Texas at the invitation of Donald Grantham and Dan Welcher with guest composer Joan Tower, and University of Central Arkansas at the invitation of Kay Kraeft with guest composer Libby Larsen.

Griebling’s compositions have been commissioned, performed, published, recorded, and warmly received in Europe, Asia and North America, and include operas, ballets, chamber music, choral and symphonic works as well as solo and vocal works.  Griebling’s work as composer, violist and conductor may be heard on recordings from Centaur: “Music for the Cross Town Trio”, “The Music of Alan Hovhaness for Horn, Voice and Strings”, and on Vienna Modern Masters/Arkivmusic, “Wildfire!”. Griebling’s music is available through her publishers, Gems Music Publications, GSSW/MAST, Jeanne, and Musicalligraphics, and directly from Griebling.  Griebling is a BMI composer.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk to completing this project will be securing the personnel and venue for the project and having the necessary funds to compensate them, another may be the possibility that at a live performance one or another musician may not be at his or her best and have concerns about releasing the recording for the use for which it was intended, and a third may be that recording equipment or operators may malfunction, and finally, there is always the possibility of weather-related (or other ‘act of God’) cancelations. My team are all experienced, mature professionals so I am relying on them to be professional and understand the necessity of a successful project for the advancement of all of our work and reputations, believing that a rising tide will lift all the boats; in the case of equipment malfunction at the performance, I plan to have at least one of the rehearsals recorded as well both to set levels for the performance and to ensure that we get the best performance/a backup; in the case of an ‘act of God’ calamity, we would attempt to reschedule the event as soon after the original date as possible. The biggest challenge resulting from completing this project is that it may have the potential to launch many of us into a larger arena for opera and require us to follow-through at an even higher fund-raising rate. If such a thing were to happen, I think we would all be happy to accept the challenges of additional work and reward that that would bring. In fact, it might help launch the careers of some of our young artists and that is, after all, one of the things we all strive for in the arts.
