About this project
I am interested in looking at systems that people use everyday and how we become used by them. The central idea comes from Douglas Rushkoff’s book Program Or Be Programmed. Rushkoff wrote “The real question is, do we direct technology, or do we let ourselves be directed by it and those who have mastered it? Choose the former and you gain access to thecontrol panel of civilization. Choose the latter, and it could be the last real choice you get to make.” I would like to create an interactive art piece that involves three people interacting and controlling three puppets through the use of computer vision. The 3 puppets will be hand crafted from a rare Kauri wood. Each puppets strings, will be controlled by 2 servo motors per puppet. The puppets will be on a stage in front of the participants. The stage will be a trapezoid shape and about 5.5(ft) tall, and the 3 front facing sides will measure 5 ft each. The backside will be 10 ft wide. The participants movements will be mirrored by the puppets. The money will be used to help me with the material cost.
