In 2003, Martin Wallace was in the process of building a stellar reputation for boardgame design. One such boardgame was "Princes of the Renaissance", a game of intrigue that would quickly capture the imagination of gamers worldwide. A small print run sold out rather quickly and those who were lucky enough to find a copy still speak very highly of the modern classic.
Over time, the call for reprint became louder. Prices in the secondary market ensured that the game was out of reach for a lot of hopeful gamers, made even more difficult by the fact that those who owned the game often weren't willing to part with their own copy; it was just too loved. Something had to be done, but the years went by with no reprinting.
In late 2015, Mercury Games was offered the opportunity to reprint the game, and having enjoyed the game at our gaming sessions over the years, we were thrilled for the opportunity. After several months in artwork and development, the time to bring the new edition into print is here! But we need your help to make it happen because without your support this product will not return to print!

We are pleased to offer stretch goals should we obtain more than our minimum funding level for this project. As per normal with Mercury Games Kickstarter projects, we thoroughly test each stretch goal item we offer and ensure that the funding level required to meet each additional stretch goal is reasonable.
This project will offer two types of Stretch Goals. As we describe each stretch goal, we will note which category it falls into. The categories are:
IN THE BOX - A stretch goal of this type is an additional piece or an extra feature that we'd really like to see added to the base game itself. Because all of these upgrades requiring additional funds, we're ready to invest our backers' pledges into these enhancements. Once we achieve the corresponding funding level and unlock these upgrades, they'll be put in every production copy.
EXPANSION BUNDLE - A stretch goal of this type represents components or items which will be given as a separate item(s) to anyone who backs this project on Kickstarter. We should make it clear that we do not believe in Kickstarter-exclusive items, so it's possible (but not guaranteed) that we'll make this bundle available for sale sometime in the future, though most likely in small numbers at shows or via our website.
If we achieve all stretch goals of this type, the expansion bundle would have a retail price of $12 - $15 USD. Backers of this project here on Kickstarter will receive all the achieved stretch goal items for free!
LIST OF STRETCH GOALS
Turn Order Markers and Cards Upgrade (IN THE BOX) - This stretch goal unlocks a full set of cardboard turn markers numbered from 1-6 in order to make it easier for all players to mark the order of play. These were not included in the original printing, but it's one of the most-requested items.
In addition, this stretch goal upgrades the Treachery Tiles into Treachery Cards, which we found are easier to draw and hold than the smaller tiles.
Family Standees (IN THE BOX) - This stretch goal unlocks 6 cardboard stand-up family tiles and their cardboard bases (minimal assembly required). One side shows the family portrait and crest in full color, and the other shows a "pass" icon.
The purpose of these standees is to make it possible to easily remember who is "in" and who is "out" in any given auction. This is much easier than trying to remember, or asking "Dave, are you in?" every time you think Dave's not paying enough attention. Just have Dave turn his standee around, and let the icon do the talking.
Extra City Tiles (IN THE BOX) - This stretch goal level adds one new city tile per city to the game. At the start of the game, instead of starting with the exact same tiles each time, now players will draw from a pool of city tiles, adding some variability to the strategies they may wish to employ. As with all stretch goals, these tiles have been thoroughly tested, and you'll likely find, as we did, they further enhance the game's replayability.
Extra Treachery Cards - "Bad Weather" (IN THE BOX) - This stretch goal introduces a new card to the Treachery Card Deck called "Bad Weather". There will be 2 such cards added to the deck. The effect of Bad Weather is to reduce the attacker or defender's die roll by one, and the devious part is that it's played during the veto stage. And like a veto, it can be played by anyone, so hopefully if you're a Condotierre you haven't made too many enemies.
Wooden Attack/Defense/Wars Fought Pieces (IN THE BOX) - This stretch goal replaces the cardboard Attack, Defense, and Wars Fought counters with painted wooden markers! Since they're not as flat/light as a cardboard counter they're easier to move around and look great!
Alternative Family Tile Powers (IN THE BOX) - In addition, we'll also be able to add a "B-Side" to all the Family Tiles in the game box. These alternative sides will show reduced family powers for players who wish to play a more strategic game, or just for variety. Printing tiles this way adds a surprising amount to the punchboard production cost, but once we've reached this stretch goal, it's something we'd really like to add to the game for everyone.
Set of 6 Player Boards (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - We're very excited to offer these as the first piece in our expansion bundle stretch goals. This stretch goal unlocks 6 full-size (approx 240mm x 140mm) player boards. These are printed on high-quality punchboard material for maximum durability (no paper boards here!)
These player boards will help you organize your troops, city tiles, gold counters, and influence counters. You'll even have a more convenient spot to place your incoming Gold income where everyone can see it.
No player boards were included in the original edition, but we've received many requests to offer these and we're pleased to do so.
Extra Set of Event Tiles (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - This stretch goal adds one new Event Tile to each era in the game. Whereas the original game had the same set of events each time, this extra Event Tile will mean that players cannot be 100% certain which events will affect play until the next era is upon them. This rewards players who have a flexible strategy, and further enhances the game's replayability.
Extra City Tiles (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - Another additional City Tile for each city! If we reach this level, each city would now have two alternate City Tiles which create some variability to the gameplay. As with the earlier City Tile stretch goal, players simply add these at the start of the game, then draw each city's normal complement before starting the game. If you're using the same old strategy every game, your opponents might have a surprise for you!
Extra Set of Event Tiles (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - This stretch goal is the same as the $50,000 stretch goal except that it adds another Event Tile for each era.
Make your plan of attack flexible because sometimes bad things happen to good plans.
Pope Standee (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - Sometimes it can be hard to tell who is holding the Pope Tile, especially from far across the table. Because the Pope can wield a lot of power, this stretch goal adds in a Pope Standee to make it extra clear that the player holding this piece is someone to whom you should be very nice.
Extra Gold and Influence Counters (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - The base game already offers a good number of Gold and Influence Counters. But sometimes making "change" isn't easy, especially if players are far apart, or if someone (like Doc, for example) is hoarding all the Gold. This stretch goal ensures that you'll always have gobs of Gold and Influence Counters in the pool.
Extra Rulebook (EXPANSION BUNDLE) - This stretch goal removes the possibility of hearing "Hey, hand me that rulebook!" by supplying you with a second copy of the rules. Now you can quietly remind yourself exactly what the Pope's powers are without causing too much suspicion.
We're very pleased to debut a feature which we think is a novel approach to stretch goals, and we're calling it "Stretch Goal Insurance".
Stretch Goal Insurance allows our backers to ensure that we unlock as many of the stretch goals as possible, and it's really quite simple:
We are certainly hopeful that this project will meet all the stretch goals on offer, but in the event that it doesn't we will willingly unlock at least one extra stretch goal that we miss if an alternative goal can be reached. For this project, that goal is Facebook shares. If we can reach 500 shares on Facebook, we'll ensure that at least one extra stretch goal of our choosing is unlocked at the end of the campaign.

In the event that we are successful in unlocking all the stretch goals through normal pledge levels, then we all still win. In this case, Mercury Games will make a charitable donation to an animal welfare organization for each and every backer. We'll either choose one ourselves, or if it's feasible, we'll ask our backers to vote on a list of potential and worthy charities.

We produce very high-quality productions and that means our unit cost tends to be quite a bit higher than our industry peers. DESIGNER'S NOTES FROM MARTIN WALLACE - MERCURY GAMES EDITION
The good folks of Mercury Games have asked me to write designer notes for the new edition of Princes of the Renaissance. As they used the magic words, “We’ll pay you!” it seemed churlish of me to refuse.
Princes of the Renaissance was originally published by my own company, Warfrog, in 2003. The year before we had put out Age of Steam, which had garnered a good amount of praise. Thus, the problem was how to follow that. I spent a long time racking my brains to come up with something good enough to print. I went through a period of what can only be called designer’s block. Princes of the Renaissance had a difficult birth, with many frustrating playtest sessions.
I particularly remember one of the final tests, where I had reached the conclusion that if I could not get the game to work then I was going to cancel the production. Fortunately a slight twist in the bidding rules suddenly made the game come to life.
You are never sure what the response will be to a new game. By the time you have developed a game you are usually done with playing it anymore. I’m a bad judge of my own games, so I was pleasantly surprised when we received a positive reaction on its release. However, we did not reprint the game, as we had done with Age of Steam. With Mercury Games stepping in to reprint this game after so many years, it seems that the fortunes for the design have significantly improved.
When designing a game with a historical theme, I find it best not to attempt to cram too much in, but instead aim to capture some essence of the period. In Princes of the Renaissance I think the element that most pleases me is the way that it can create a situation where a player will bid to fight for a city and then throw the battle to his opponent. Now for some people this might sound a little gamey, but this is the bit that is actually historical. There were cases where condottieri deliberately lost battles for their own nefarious purposes. To a certain extent the Italians had elevated the art of war into an intricate game of manoeuvre, subterfuge, and treachery, with a set of unwritten rules that each player followed. Unfortunately for them, the French had not read the same rulebook. In the French invasion of the Italian city-states in 1495, they inflicted devastation on the Italians who had grown complacent.

Q1) Will there be any additional stretch goals added during this campaign?
A1) No, we will not add any stretch goals which are not thoroughly tested. If we are able to make it all the way through the stretch goals, we'll be pleased that every person backing the project receives the maximum number of extras that the budget will allow for. Creating untested items just to add more stretch goals is both irresponsible and insulting to the legacy of this game.
Q2) Why aren't there any Kickstarter-exclusive items available?
A1) We could talk about this for hours, but the short answer is that we don't feel it's fair to try to force people to back this product here or else face the reality of never acquiring some of the goodies. We chose when to run this campaign, but maybe some folks aren't able to back the project right now for various reasons that aren't their fault. Should they be denied the opportunity to obtain these items? We feel that a discount from MSRP for the game itself, free or reduced shipping costs and a set of stretch goals worth $12 - $15 included for free represents very good value on its own. We don't need or want to try to hold people ransom to obtain an exclusive item. That doesn't mean finding the stretch goals in the future is at all guaranteed (and this is the only time you'll find the stretch goals free), but someone who was unable to back the project here could potentially find these items later if they wished to do so.
If you're able to back this project now, we hope you'll see the added perks for doing so, along with our gratitude for helping to bring this classic game back into print after so many years.
Q3) Can I play the game without the stretch goal items?
A3) Yes, absolutely. Another hallmark of our Kickstarter projects is that any stretch goal items we offer are not required to enjoy the game. Rather, our stretch goals are ways to add some additional variety or enhancement to the game. They are not critical to your enjoyment of the base game. Of course, we feel that the stretch goal items are still very desirable, especially for those who know the game well and want to add some additional variety, but if you played the game without them you would still enjoy a very high-quality and complete gaming experience.
Q4) When will my game ship?
A4) At this time we predict a November 2016 ship-out date. It's possible that we could ultimately deliver more quickly than that (such as with our previous successful Kickstarter project, Guns of Gettysburg), but it could also be late too.
One thing we can say for certain is that all backers rewards will ship out before any distribution of the game takes place through normal distribution channels.
Our two primary shipping points are Georgia, USA and Germany. Depending on your distance away from these places, your exact arrival time may vary. For Canadian backers, we'll be bringing up your rewards from Georgia to our offices for further shipping within Canada, and so we'll ask you to allow us some time to accomplish that (though we'll process them as quickly as possible).
Having you as a backer means a lot to us, and we'll give you the best service that we can.
Q5) I really wish you would spend more on a flashier Kickstarter video or more pretty things to look at on the Kickstarter page. Perhaps some laser beams would be nice too.
A5) Mercury Games is known for having some of the highest production values in the industry. Put one of our game boards next to some much larger competitors' boards and see for yourself.
The truth of the matter is that Kickstarter videos can cost a lot of money, and whether a large or small publisher, every dime spent making a flashier video/campaign page is one less dime spent making YOUR GAME the highest possible quality. We're fortunate with this campaign to have received some help from some very talented artists, meaning a reasonable amount invested into our video and campaign. But in the end, we would rather invest the of bulk our backers' funds into a high-quality product because that's what you'll be spending most of your time enjoying.
Q6) Why don't you offer stretch goals for thicker tiles or a sturdier box?
A6) We're gamers, and we are not satisfied with the rise of low-quality productions that currently plague the industry. We produce high-quality games, and because of this, we won't hold you ransom for "upgraded components". The minimum funding level is what obtains upgraded components for everyone because we wouldn't publish the game without them.
From time to time, such as in this campaign, we may, for example, offer a wooden marker stretch goal when a high-quality cardboard marker would have been completely acceptable, but we'll never force you to reach a stretch goal just to obtain a minimum level of quality. Stretch goals should be meant to add to a gaming experience, and not as a threat to reach a certain level or else receive a lower-quality product.
Q7) Will the game be printed if the minimum funding level is not met?
A7) No, this is an expensive project and we are a small company. We need to reach at least our minimum funding level in order for this project to move ahead.
Q8) Will there be non-English editions of the game?
A8) Yes, at this time we expect there will be a German, Italian, and Polish editions also released around the same time as our English editions, assuming we reach our minimum funding level here in this campaign.

Risks and challenges
As with all projects involving third-party companies (factories, logistics) there are some risks that are outside of our control.
Mercury Games is operated by folks with a lot of industry experience, and so we've been able to successfully control our risk levels and provide great customer service for our customers in the event of problems.
Our plan, in the event of a problem, will always remain the same: Find a solution that suits our customers' needs and then implement that solution in a way that treats our customers with the respect they deserve.
