In 2007, after many years of design and development, Container first appeared on the world stage and set a new standard for open economy boardgames. Noted for its ability to generate games with vastly different outcomes, Container became known as the game that doesn't hold players' hands or offer a safety net. Needless to say, Container was a special game and became quite a valued collector's item.
Now, in 2017, after spending years out of print, Mercury Games has stepped up to reprint Container in a 10th Anniversary Jumbo Edition. In this new edition, you will even find some new content in the form of the Investment Bank add-on. This new edition can be enjoyed with or without the new material, meaning even more varied outcomes for your economy!
This Jumbo Edition is set to be the crowning product in the history of Container, eclipsing the production standards of the original with amazing ship and container miniatures. With ship miniatures over 7 inches in length (!), this scale has never been attempted in other boardgames and it promises to be something worth having in your collection.
Mercury Games would like to extend a personal invitation to you to help us make this unprecedented project a reality. With extraordinarily-high production costs related to such amazing sculpts and components, we need your support!
Carrying an MSRP of $120 US Dollars, this project is easily the most expensive we have ever produced. It's also the heaviest thanks to huge resin miniatures!
Though the costs to produce such an amazing product keep rising for us, we've publically committed to our Kickstarter Backer levels in advance, and we intend to live up to those promises.
What this means for you as a Backer is an amazing opportunity to help us produce this product and save a lot of money at the same time!
The Mercury Games edition of Container will contain:
5 HUGE Resin Ships - Over 7 inches long! According to some suppliers, the LARGEST and HEAVIEST miniatures in any boardgame ever!
~140 Mini-Euro-Sized Cards (Money, Container Value Cards, Others)
**NEW!** Now updated to 168 Cards! See this update!
One Island Board and One Investment Bank Board - High Quality 2mm thick! (10.5" x 9.5" each)
5 Large Player Boards - High Quality 2mm thick (9.5" x 10.5")!
Huge Wooden Factories and Warehouses (50% larger than the original version! More than 3.3x more volume than the original!)
HIgh-Quality 2mm thick box!
Thanks to your support, we are adding five $0 Bidding (Bluffing) Cards into the game for all Backers/Preorder copies of Container! We thank you for your support of this project!
UPDATE #2! Thanks to your continued support, we are now able to make it TEN $0 Bidding/Bluffing Cards! Please see this update for more information.
New for this edition of Container is the Investment Bank Add-On content!
This new entity is a sort of "A.I. Player" which operates independently of other players in the game. It features three brokers who are seeking to earn profits for the Investment Bank. They have both cash and containers on offer for the players to purchase, and also function as an addtional port for players to visit.
On a players turn, they can choose to "Call Broker" and make a bid for one of the brokers' holdings. They mark this by taking a special card which records their bid. They always offer cash for containers, or containers for cash. On a different player's turn, they can choose to increase the offer, hoping to secure the cash or containers for a better price. No matter what happens though, if a player's turn starts with the Broker Card in their possession, the broker has accepted their bid and the cash and containers are exchanged. Be careful though, if you've just won some containers you're going to need to sail by to pick them up!
The Investment Bank also takes care of loans to players and earns profits from their interest payments. Players can speculate against large cash reserves at the Investment Bank by offering up some of their slower-selling containers.
In playtests the Investment Bank can have as varied a performance as the economy itself. Sometimes the brokers are a powerhouse, gobbling up cash and containers at a torrid pace. Other times the bank will struggle as players grind the best possible deals out of the brokers. The fate of the bank makes for a storyline in itself, and for gameplay purposes it ensures an entity which is always available for interaction, even when playing with the minimal number of players.
For purists, yes, the Investment Bank can be easily removed. In fact, some players will find that alternating games with and then without the Investment Bank makes for a fun economic experiment!
This option is available to all backers/preorder customers no matter where you chose to support this project.

Maybe you've never had the chance to try Container? In recent years, this has become a real problem because Container became quite expensive in the secondary market and was difficult to find.
If you've never had the chance to try Container, here are a couple of useful links:
Container: Original Version (contains how-to-play videos, reviews etc)
Stretch goals are in Canadian Dollars.
At $25,000 in pledges, we'll team up with Meeple Realty to produce a custom wood insert for Container and provide all Backers (and preorder customers) with a 10% discount code to purchase one for your own copy of Container!
The Rewards for this project are going to be a doozy! This will be the heaviest and most expensive project we've ever taken on!
Shipping rates for the United States will be subsidized for most Backers. We're setting a flat rate of about $15 US Dollars ($19 Canadian dollars) anywhere in the Continental United States, which means that, unless you live close to the fulfillment company, we'll be subsidizing shipping anywhere between $2 and $10 (per single Rewards) depending on exactly where you live. For Backer levels with multiple Rewards, we are able to further improve the per-reward shipping price. Note that we have to set shipping prices in Canadian dollars, and so there may be minor fluctuations depending on exact final exchange rates.
For the 2 copy pledge levels, the per unit cost to ship drops to about $12 ($15 Canadian Dollars).
We are not able to ship these rewards to Alaska or Hawaii. Please contact us if you're a backer from these locations and we'll do our best to help, but do NOT back without contacting us first, please.
Because of the expected size and weight of this product, we are unable to accept backers from outside the United States. However, our friends at Giochix (Italy) are helping us out by offering preorders to everyone in the EU/Asia territories.
Please visit Giochix or simply click on the banner above to be re-directed there. Preordering via Giochix helps to make this project possible!
For Canada Backers, we invite you to preorder from our friends at BoardGame Bliss. This will ensure that your Rewards ship to you from within Canada, and it will also allow BGB to offer you a very competitive shipping rate.
Head there now by clicking the banner above!

Q1)Why are there so few stretch goals?
A1) This project is very special, but also very difficult and expensive to produce. We have been already told by at least two manufacturers that these ship sculpts are the largest ever attempted in a boardgame. Needless to say, this requires special and very expensive tooling, not to mention all the other large and amazing components we're seeking to create.
We've already been made the victim of "price-creep" where a manufacturer quietly and consistently raises their prices during the quoting stages. This is partly due to the small print run this project is likely to receive. Every time we add another special item for an even smaller group of people (i.e. special backers item), the cost for everyone increases dramatically, meaning our backer levels would be more expensive.
In order to keep the project reasonable for our customers, we have decided to focus on delivering the highest-possible quality game that you'll be proud to have backed.
Q2) Why are the Pledge levels so cheap relative to the MSRP for the game?
A2) When we submitted this project for manufacturing quotes, we received several written bids. After selecting one candidate, unfortunately they chose to tear up their written offer (probably illegal of them to do) and resubmit a bid nearly 100% higher.
Obviously, we will not be producing Container with that supplier, but rising costs have forced us to raise the MSRP a little higher than we initially planned. However, we publically committed to offer these Backer levels, and we refuse to break a promise to our Backers. So, in the end, our Backers are the winner in this situation, and we don't have a problem with that at all.
Q3) When will my Rewards ship?
A3) As Backers of our previous Kickstarter projects know, we have never failed to deliver on-time. In fact, sometimes we have been able to deliver early, and without sacrificing any of our high quality standards.
In this case, this project has no precedent, which is to say that no other publisher has tried this before. This means we need to be cautious in our approach. We'll always take quality over speed, but rest assured that we won't waste time either.
At this time our current estimate shows that we should start shipping to Backers in January of 2018. Given the level of complexity in the project, we must say that there is a reasonable chance that our timeline will need to be modified, but we give you our pledge that any modification will come with a complete explanation and an updated timeline. We've never once been late with a project, and we don't intend to start now. But we'll always be open and honest no matter what may transpire.
Having you as a backer means a lot to us, and we'll give you the best service that we can. As always, Backer copies will ship out before any other copies.
Q4) I really wish you would spend more on a flashier Kickstarter video or more pretty things to look at on the Kickstarter page. Perhaps some laser beams would be nice too.
A4) Mercury Games is known for having some of the highest production values in the industry. Put one of our game boards next to some much larger competitors' boards and see for yourself. The truth of the matter is that Kickstarter videos can cost a lot of money and whether a large or small publisher, every dime spent making a flashier video/campaign page is one less dime spent making YOUR GAME the highest possible quality. In the end, we would rather invest the of bulk our backers' funds into a high-quality product because that's what you'll be spending most of your time enjoying.
Q5) Why don't you offer stretch goals for thicker tiles or a sturdier box?
A5) We're gamers, and we are not satisfied with the rise of low-quality productions that currently plague the industry. We produce high-quality games, and because of this, we won't hold you ransom for "upgraded components". The minimum funding level is what obtains upgraded components for everyone because we wouldn't publish the game without them.
With this campaign in particular, perhaps it's best to think of it as a project where all the best stretch goals are already unlocked because the final Rewards will be impressive!
Q6) Will there be non-English editions of the game?
A6) At this moment we do not expect any language except English. That may change in the future, of course.
Q7) Can I play this version of the game with the original rules?
A7) Though we feel the game has benefitted from the years of development, yes, this game is compatible with the original rules. You'll find them available for free download at Boardgamegeek.com. Please keep in mind that there are some small differences between editions, such as a reduced number of containers (for better game flow) which would require some minimal workaround if playing with the full complement of five players (extra cubes, pennies etc).
Q8) What can I do to help this project succeed?
A8) If you've already backed this project, thank you! If you want to help us out some more, please share this project on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media. There are potentially a lot of people who would consider backing the project, and we would really appreciate your help in reaching them.
Q9) Can I play an extended game that involves 100 or even more Containers?
A9) Sure, you can play that way if you want, noting that this edition includes 85 containers, which 10 years of testing and development has indicated is the number which maximizes the enjoyment factor for the average player. Of course, you will need to find a way to track however many extra containers you want to play with. You can use pennies, or just turn a container on its end, counting it as 2 (or even 5) containers in order to recycle them back into the game. Please note that some weird game situations could occur with an unsupported number of containers, or at the very least an endgame which tends to drag on longer than it should.
*Update* We are offering and add-on purchase of 15 containers for those who want to play an extended game and don't wish to do it using the above suggested methods. Please scroll up to see more about that offer.
Needless to say, since we would never offer an incomplete game, we are confident in the completeness of this new edition as-is.
Q10) Is the original 2008 expansion included in this Kickstarter project or will it be available again?
A10) The short answer to both questions is no. But there is a good reason for it. The original expansion had 4 modules which were meant to be used as the players saw fit. 1 of those modules has been improved and appears in the new content of this Jumbo Edition. 2 of the modules are antiquated, and have been replaced by more interesting mechanics, and are therefore no longer necessary. 1 final mechanic, the Luxury Containers, are an item which may later reintroduced in the form of a new expansion, but if that were to happen it would be at a later date.
Risks and challenges
Mercury Games is a professional publisher with many years of experience publishing high-quality games. Some of the backers of this project will already know our track record for delivering on-time (or even early) and delivering a high-quality product (please see our Guns of Gettysburg and Princes of the Renaissance projects here on Kickstarter)
With any project, there are risks we cannot control and risks that we can. We enjoy long-standing relationships with our printing partners and as such, they know we have high standards for our games. We have a lot of experience guiding development, production, and logistics.
Sometimes things beyond our control can go wrong. Third-party suppliers may shortchange us or logistics companies may deliver late. Fortunately we have the experience to deal with almost any unforeseen issue that may arise, and our track record in this regard speaks for itself.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
