I'm mounting the first American readings of Beau Hopkins' explosive and timely new play about a Ugandan man killed because he is gay. Read more
This project was successfully funded on February 14, 2013.
About this project
Uganda's Ministry of Ethics arrested producer David Cecil for producing a play with a gay character in it. That groundbreaking play is now coming to the USA for a series of staged readings.
Edit: On February 8th 2013 the Guardian (UK) printed that David Cecil is being held near Kampala for deportation. Now, more than ever before, it is critical to give audiences a chance to hear the play and contemplate its lessons and meaning.
Beau Hopkins, the playwright behind The River and the Mountain, will be joining Ugandan cast member Okuyo Prynce, the American cast and director Sarah Imes Borden for a series of readings and talkbacks. They will be aimed at promoting this vital play and a discussion of the gay rights situation in Uganda in light of their efforts to pass a "Kill the Gays" bill.
We need funding because we want to make the readings free to the public so everyone can hear this new play and take part in the discussion. The American debut in Lincoln, NE was extremely successful and we're preparing to head for Baltimore and Washington, DC this March.

Risks and challenges
The TRATM team know there are a lot of potential roadblocks facing us (what if Beau Hopkins misses his plane? What happens if we can't find the actors we need?) but we're seasoned professionals and we know the show WILL GO ON!
I've been working in theatre for over 20 years. I can manage delayed schedules, venue problems and actor/actress casting decisions. If Beau is delayed, we'll rearrange the press interviews so he can talk to people later. I'm really looking forward to bringing together theatre lovers, gay rights activists, politicians, pastors and social reformers. This large, loving community may have some philosophical differences but they will pull together to create a meaningful and productive set of readings.
