“Life and death are absolutes. You get born, live and then you die. The end. Period. That is, if you live anywhere else in the world except Cape Noire. You see, in Cape Noire there are no absolutes. There is only hell and it just goes on. And on. And on.”

Ron Fortier, author and creator of Brother Bones, from the Undead Avenger Brother Bones

A game of horror, crime, and consequences.

Scaldcrow Games and Worlds of Pulp would like to introduce to you an incredible book and campaign setting: Ron Fortier’s Cape Noire, featuring Brother Bones. Utilizing the lightening quick and easy to use Bare Bones Beyond game mechanics you’ll be playing in this pulp-era setting in no time!

Cape Noire is a city located along the Pacific Northwest coast; set in the 1930s, it has been described as “a cauldron of licentious humanity.” Supernatural creatures and unspeakable sciences dwell in the dark shadows and dirty back alleys, prowling and preying on the innocent population. In addition to these horrific menaces, there are the ever present corrupt city officials and openly violent mobsters. Fortunately, there is hope, a grim reckoner of justice and vengeance; it comes in the form of a supernatural boogeyman—the undead avenger, Brother Bones!

This book contains:

—Generic conversion guides to adapt this city to most other game mechanics

—The complete rules for pulp style gaming in Bare Bones Beyond; a simple, fast-paced RPG based on a player-first rules system. All you need is 2d6 and your imagination!

—A character index which places every character and location into the campaign setting. Don’t just play the game, immerse yourself in Ron Fortier’s stories.

—Backstory tables which empower players to create original backstories for their characters based on the fiction, insuring the characters are authentic to feel of the city.

—The complete history of the city

—A clearly defined criminal hierarchy

—Supernatural challenges

—Every location mentioned in the comics, novels, and short stories of Brother Bones are detailed and placed on the city map.

—Full descriptions and write-ups of villains, heroes, and supernatural threats; characters include villains such as: Harry Beest, The Dragon, Professor Bugosi, Mott Smally, Zorn as well as protagonists like Billy Crandall, Brother Bones, Chief of Detectives Dan Rains, Father Dennis O’Malley, Milton Pender, Sister Blood, and many more.

—Fully described supernatural and exotic threats such as demons, ghosts, shadow warriors, vampires, werewolves, and zombies—and that’s just for starters!

—Campaign specific Library Spells, magic rituals, and otherworldly powers; fully detailed and written up

—A full description of the city itself, Cape Noire, detailed as a character in the Bare Bones Beyond system, this allows the game master to determine city-wide reactions at a glance.

—151 story-hooks, specific to Cape Noire and its style of characters. These hooks are based on the locations in the game.

—A brief history and description of the pulp age it represents.

—Special rules for the existence and appearance of Brother Bones.

—A Cosmic Eye, specially designed for use in Ron Fortier’s Cape Noire, featuring Brother Bones; this series of tables generates random adventures and story altering possibilities

—A special introductory adventure entitled The Black Knave adapted from a short story by T. Glenn Bane

—An original, short comic entitled Behind the Mask written by Ron Fortier and illustrated by T. Glenn Bane

Where Your Money Goes

Our goal is to adapt the fictional world of Ron Fortier’s Cape Noire for Worlds of Pulp into an RPG and produce both electronic and printed books. With your support we can do it. This is where your money will go:

—Paying the writers, publishers, and contributors connected with this project

—Paying editors, illustrators, and graphic designers

—Paying for new, original illustrations by Brother Bones artist, Rob Davis!

—Paying for the printing and shipping of the book

We need you to make this happen.

An Offer from the Man himself!

The Author and Creator of Brother Bones made this announcement on 4/22/15. How cool is this?

If my good friends at Scaldcrow Games reach their Kickstarter goal for the game module based on my Brother Bones stories, I am going to do the following. I will have T Glenn Bane conduct a drawing from all the people who were generous enough to contribute to this campaign. 3 names will be drawn and I will have all 3 appear in my next Brother Bones story.

Thank you for your support so far, but we are not done giving…

Every $50 over our $3,000 goal—adds one new Cape Noire appropriate character for your campaign city. Maximum of 20 characters may be added in this way.

—Every $400 over our $3,000 goal—adds two maps to the game from Fabled Environments. A maximum of 10 maps can be added in this way.

Every $400 over our $3,000 goal—adds two pages of content to the book: a one page short adventure followed by one page of characters equipment. The maximum content which can be added in this way is 40 pages.

Thank You for your time.

Risks and challenges

Since 2007, Scaldcrow Games has produced over twenty-five books for fantasy, hero, horror, and science fiction settings as well as numerous art products. As we have a group of in-house illustrators, designers, and writers, we do not foresee any challenges with the production of this product. Sadly, sickness and natural disasters cannot be predicted and we hope to be spared such trials. In the event something unforeseen was to happen, we have professional contacts in the industry which we can depend on for assistance. We are confident our difficulties would not become yours.
