About this project
SQOOB creates virtual reality applications for Google Cardboard specifically for elementary school children aging from 6 to 12 years. Google Cardboard is a piece of carton with two lenses, Velcro, elastic and magnets. After a few minutes of folding you have virtual reality glasses that are assessable for a large number of people. The applications that SQOOB creates have an educational, but playful character. The, once opened, applications are presented in split screen on a smartphone and have a small difference in perspective. The 3D-effect makes the environment in the Google Cardboard realistic.
SQOOB sees that there is a need for educational methods with new media and especially with virtual reality. Virtual reality is no longer a thing of the future. It is happening right now. Children are very interested in new technological developments and besides that a lot of children receive smartphones at a young age at their disposal.
The applications can be easily downloaded and used. In particular SQOOB develops applications showing natural habitats of animals for Zoos. A child is able to make a virtual journey through the habitat of an animal with the use of this application. Besides that, the interactive component can be used for exciting virtual reality tours for teaching. SQOOB gives children the opportunity to learn about different subjects in a playful way.
During the virtual journey in the habitat of an animal, the child hears informative, but interesting stories about this animal. In the application the children can move to any place in the habitat and they hear noises that mimic the animals environment and the animal itself. The applications of SQOOB can be used during the visit of a zoo or at home.
Risks and challenges
Educational institutions might have to get used to this new method of education with virtual reality. It is new and you have to experience this virtual journey yourself to see what it might mean for elementary school children.
It is our job to convey this new media to the people.
