What is the BxADP?
The first event of its kind in the Bronx -- and perhaps in the world -- the Bronx Artist Documentary Project has paired Bronx photographers with Bronx painters, sculptors, printmakers, graffiti and street artists, collage, textile and other visual artists to create a documentary portrait of a vibrant and often overlooked artistic community.
The Project was designed to create more awareness of all the artists in the Bronx and to shine a light on their vital and positive contribution to the life of our borough.
How will it do this?
1. By mounting an EXHIBITION of the photographs (on view now!)
2. By publishing a fine art BOOK of the photographs (this is what we're raising money for)
The BOOK will include the 100 photos in the exhibition plus many others. This book will be an important, historical record of the Bronx visual arts community at this major turning point in our history, when the borough is undergoing rapid change.
The EXHIBITION runs September 13 – October 8, 2014 in the galleries of the magnificent Andrew Freedman Home, an arts and cultural center located at 1125 Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
Who took the photographs?
Thirty amazing photographers, who – from January to June of this year – criss-crossed the borough, documenting 80 visual artists at work in their Bronx studios or other Bronx venues. The list includes many award-winning photographers and photojournalists, several of whom have been documenting the Bronx for decades.

Which visual artists have been photographed?
The documented artists come from all corners of the Bronx, work in a wide variety of visual art forms, represent a diversity of cultural backgrounds, and range in age from 19-91. For a complete list of artists, visit our website.
How were the participants chosen?
Most of the participating photographers were recommended by the Bronx Documentary Center, with additional photographers recommended by members of the Bronx Arts Alliance. The visual artists were invited to apply based on recommendations offered by members of the Bronx Arts Alliance, and also through extensive internet research and recommendations from other artists and curators.
Why 110 Participants?
Actually, the Project's goal was to have 100 participants, in celebration of this year's Bronx County Centennial. But before we knew it we had 110 artists involved (so it's like we're giving 110%)!
Who organized this Project?
The BxADP is organized by a group of Bronx artists called the Bronx Artists Collective, in partnership with the Bronx Documentary Center. The organizers are: Daniel Hauben (director), Michael Kamber (photography curator), Judith Lane (project coordinator) and Jeanine Alfieri (artist curator).
Why are we doing this Project?
We're doing this because we have made the Bronx our home -- and at this moment the Bronx is being “discovered”: new buildings are going up on every corner, people are moving here from other boroughs and ‘development,’ ‘retail’ and ‘affordable housing’ have become the catchphrases of the day...but there's not much mention of art.
We want the world to be aware of our vibrant and flourishing arts community. The arts and artists of the Bronx are among the borough’s greatest resources. Recognizing and supporting the artists who are here will help to maintain the uniqueness of The Bronx as change continues, and help to cement the Bronx's reputation as one of the great creative cauldrons of the world.

Risks and challenges
All the artists who have put this Project together have proven track records of managing multi-faceted, large group initiatives. They are committed to the BXADP, to seeing every aspect of it through to completion, and to doing everything in their power to raise awareness of the arts and artists in the Bronx.
If the funds are raised, the main challenge will be getting all the pieces of the book together by the end of the year -- then it takes 3 months to be printed overseas. (That's why the delivery date is April 2015.) But we have a designer and editor already in place, and we have no doubt that deadlines will be met and the book will become a reality by next spring!
If we don't raise enough money to print the book as planned, we may have to scale back the size of the book, or publish it with a softcover instead of a hard cover. But we are determined to do everything in our power to make it happen, and to make it as high quality and beautiful as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
