This is what happens after a semi-popular, semi-notorious, small time weed and cocaine dealer in Hyde Park dies of an overdose.
This project is my first feature length movie. The production budget is small, and I am doing most of the work myself and with a small team of people I enjoy working closely with.
I Wouldn't be Boys With You if You Were a Poser is the story the effect the death of a friend has on four people in Hyde Park, Chicago. The film follows Alex, a well meaning 20 year old, attempting to navigate the overbearing personalities of his friends, Nick and Valerie, in the shadow of Stuart's death. Alex didn't know Stuart very well, but Nick and Valerie did, and his experience of the situation is seen through their accounts and reactions, and those of other acquaintances in the periphery of Alex's social world. The movie takes place over the course of the same day that Stuart's body is found.
I produced a scene from I Wouldn't be Boys last winter in January, which is what the above video is. It was made as a stand alone short film. That scene, which we will re-shoot, will become the first scene of the movie. The rehearsal process will take place in late June and July. To each rehearsal I will bring a rough scene sketch, that fits into the larger plot of the movie. I will explain the arc of the scene to the actors, and we will work through it, improvising dialogue and then solidifying it, until we have a consistent scene. Shooting will take place throughout July and into August. Editing will be completed by mid September and the opening will take place at DOC films at the University of Chicago, sometime during the fall (most likely October).
This is a somewhat unorthodox process for making a movie, because I am not starting with a finished script. Much of the actual content will reveal itself during rehearsal. A big influence on the way I think about film is Mike Leigh, particularly his film High Hopes. I hope to turn the lens on a time and place with notes of both satire and gravity, similar to the way he does. I don't know exactly what is going to happen. I have ideas about where the story will go, but that ultimately depends on the relationships that develop between the actors that I cast.
The part of Alex will be played by Alex Stein, who I've worked with extensively as both an actor and director, and co-stars in the short film posted above.
The part of Jessica will be played by Molly Miller, who I've also worked with. Molly is active in the improv community in Chicago.
The part of Nick will be played by Ethan Dubin, an actor working Chicago.
I don't need a lot to make a good movie. I can borrow most of the equipment I need from my school, I don't need to rent any spaces or pay any licensing fees. But I do have great group of people working with me, and I do think its important to pay them a little something for their time. Most of the Kickstarter money for this project will go towards paying the artists involved. The more that I can raise on Kickstarter, the closer the Artists are to getting what they deserve (as if that ever happens). The rest will go towards publicity materials for the opening and subsequent screenings. Thank you very much for looking at my project!
