“Much has changed for singer-songwriter Alice Peacock since her last solo studio album, 2009’s Love Remains…”Feel the weight of the world on my shoulders/ Am I wiser or am I just older?” she sings on “Dry Spell,” from her new collection, Minnesota. The record suggests that despite her “wondering what all is yet to be,” she has indeed attained a measure of wisdom...“Being a parent, I don’t know that I could love any more than I do right now,” she says, “so I’ve also never been more vulnerable. I have everything to lose.”
For me, it was all about finding balance in my life. I continued to write and perform on a pared down schedule, keeping that thread of connection with my audience and friends who have steadfastly supported my music. I describe it as "keeping that muscle alive" as, at times, it felt like my creative self was at risk of disappearing in the whirlwind of mothering three very busy, curious and active children. A workout on all levels for sure - one, two, three, four . . . 25 senses working overtime!
Then, this past fall my twins enrolled in full-day kindergarten and, finally, I had the time to record these songs in Nashville that had been resting in the quiet for years. With the help of my dear friend and GRAMMY award winning producer, Phil Madeira, I’m thrilled to bring these songs into the world. Backing me up were Phil and the rest of the members of Emmylou Harris' Red Dirt Boys - Bryan Owings, Chris Donohue, Will Kimbrough - along with all-stars John Painter, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Derri Daugherty and James Hollihan. Together we wove a strong musical quilt that supports and warms these songs perfectly.
The result is my new record Minnesota which feels like a touchstone of where I've been, who I am today and where I look to in the future. I am lucky to spend my summers with my family up on the Minnesota/Canadian border teaching songwriting at summer camp. It’s here sitting shoulder to shoulder with wilderness that I’m reminded how to breathe again, what’s really important and how to truly see what’s in front of me, from the miraculous regenerating Jack pine to the striped tiger leech camouflaged in the reeds. I grew up in Minnesota and the calls of the red winged blackbird and the loon still stir my soul as I am instantly transported back to an 8 year old, jumping off the end of the dock into White Bear Lake while the sunfish scatter around me. There’s nothing like being in a canoe and not seeing another soul for days to make one think the dichotomous thoughts “I am nothing. I am holy.” My family and nature continue to be my greatest teachers.
As many of you know, much has changed in the music industry over the last decade. In the past, record labels provided the money for the recording, production and release of records. These days many artists depend on their listeners and supporters to take that journey with them. I like to say that the Internet taketh away (due to the fact that many people refuse to pay for music anymore) and the Internet giveth back (in that the power to connect music makers and their fans is stronger than ever before). I believe this community way - where we travel a road together - is a lot more fun and in the spirit of the intimate music-making that speaks to my heart. I love the conversation that happens between me and an audience at shows; that "give" and "take" exchange of energy. It's why I keep performing and writing songs. That being said, making records has a real cost and most artists have had to find a new way to produce their music.
That’s where platforms like Kickstarter have been a godsend. And though I have never done a Kickstarter campaign before, I am excited to take on this challenge and walk this journey together with my fans. You all know me as well as anyone. So let’s do this!
This is what I need.
I am asking for $24,550. This will cover the costs of the musicians, the recording studio time, the producer, the mixing and mastering engineers, the creation of the CD artwork, the CD duplication, the Kickstarter video and the manufacturing of the merchandise. The record itself is already recorded, mixed and mastered; I need your help to finish the process!
With Kickstarter it’s all or nothing. If I don’t reach my goal I don’t get a cent and your credit card isn’t charged. But let’s not go there...let’s do this together!
You'll see that there are various levels of pledges.
Choose from an early digital download of my record in May to autographed copies of the CD before my official release in September; a cool camping coffee mug (with original artwork "Minnesota Jack Pine" by Phary Woods - see above); a vintage Alice mosaic poster & handwritten lyrics; a Martin "Backpacker" guitar; a SKYPE songwriting session; a custom written song for you or an intimate house concert. Please find a level of pledge reward that speaks to you most. My sincere thanks, in advance, for your support!
Many blessings to you,
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Please pledge and help me spread the word about this campaign among your friends and on social media!
IF WE EXCEED THE FUNDRAISING GOAL then we can do really awesome things like a limited vinyl edition of Minnesota, more promotion and extended touring.
Risks and challenges
The recording is finished and I have every reason to believe that we will meet this Kickstarter goal together! I have good relationships with all the vendors manufacturing the CD and merchandise and I am skilled at packing and shipping. Seriously. I love mailing stuff!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
