Artist Spotlight: Rian Gonzales

Posted by Ryan McSwain (Creator)

Today we’re speaking with Rian Gonzales. She’s a talented artist from the Philippines, and I can barely believe we got her on this project. Rian took time out of a busy schedule to talk to us about Lisa Frank, Archie Comics, and magical girls.

Ryan: I love the bright, vibrant colors in your art. How do you achieve that effect?

Rian: I've always been very fond of colors! I grew up in a time when Lisa Frank was one of my art heroes and I basically collected stickers, toys, stationaries, everything! I try not to use pure black in my illustrations and squeeze in as much complementary colors as I can in my illos! :)

Ryan: One of the reasons I wanted you for this project is that wonderful cover you did for Betty & Veronica #1. How did that project come about?

Rian: It was probably the most exciting project yet in my career as an illustrator! I loved the new revamped Archie series so much that I decided to make some fan art of the well-loved characters. After a while, I was surprised to see "Riverdale Greetings!" in my mail and the rest was history! It was such a fun learning experience to finally work on an actual comic cover! :)

Ryan: That's so exciting. What are some comics you enjoy?

Rian: Growing up, I read a lot of mangas, manwhas and comics! I, of course, read a lot of Archie digest! ahaha A comic I also collected in particular was Gen 13! J Scott Campbell was a huge influence to me as an illustrator. The concept of the comic then was fresh and fun. I hope they revamp it again sometime in the future!

Ryan: You wouldn't believe how many Archie digests I've read! Do you have anything in the works you can tell us about?

Rian: I'm churning out as much portfolio work as I can! I've been shortlisted a year ago for an interview with CB Cebulski and I pass a few cover tests here and there, still trying to push my luck! :) I've come to know a few contacts so I have to keep burning the midnight oil to get a big project again in the future :)

Ryan: I’ve seen your fantastic commissions. Who are some of your favorite characters to draw?

Rian: Some of my faves would have to be Nico Minoru, Scarlet Witch, Batgirl, Black Canary and magical girls like Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon! Basically anything quirky and fun that I can put my own spin to it! :)

Ryan: Thanks making the time for this! Where can people find you online?

Rian: Thank you so much, Ryan!

Ryan: Be sure to check out her online store for some amazing pieces! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for Four Color Bleed. Be on the lookout, because I’m sure we’ll be seeing much more of Rian’s work in the future.

I’m seeing lots of shoutouts on Facebook and Twitter. Y’all are the best backers a guy could hope for. Keep it up—all our hard work is paying off!
