We love jazz and have been performing for almost four years. Whenever we perform, people ask us if we have a CD. After a couple of home recordings in our living room, we feel that we have musically outgrown what our modest recording equipment can do. We want to get into a recording studio with a professional producer so that we can record, mix, master, and share a high-quality full-length album that sounds polished but also captures the spontaneity of the music we play live.

We are lucky to live in North Carolina, a state with a rich musical heritage. North Carolinians have contributed a lot to jazz over the decades. We are focusing our album on some of our favorite jazz artists with connections to NC. To name just a few of the composers and performers whose music we will feature, Billy Strayhorn spent summers with his grandparents in Hillsborough, NC, Thelonious Monk was born in Rocky Mount, John Coltrane grew up in High Point, and Nina Simone went to high school in Asheville. We’re also including a couple of our own compositions to represent the latest generation. And we’re excited that a few of our musical mentors will appear on the album, including violinist/vocalist Gabriel Pelli (who plays with bands like Old Ceremony and the Onyx Club Boys), and Derek Kratzer on upright bass.

We’ll record the album at Overdub Lane in Durham, where some of our favorite NC-based artists and bands also have recorded (including Nneena Freelon, John Brown, Ari Picker, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers). But recording an album in a studio without the backing of a label is costly. Here are some of the cost categories associated with making our first record:

  • 5-6 days of recording at Overdub Lane
  • Mixing and mastering
  • Reimbursing guest musicians
  • Printing 1,000 CDs
  • Graphic design and photography for album artwork
  • Multi-camera video shoot for promotional videos and high-quality electronic press kit
  • Publicity so that we can reach out to jazz festivals in the US and Europe
  • Administrative fees and taxes

We’ve saved up some money of our own, but all of this really adds up! That's why we decided to set up this Kickstarter campaign. We’re hoping that with the help of our friends and fans, we will be able to make an album that captures the unique virtuosity and arrangements that make the Bucket Brothers so special.

Risks and challenges

If we can reach our Kickstarter goal, we are confident that we will have the resources to make this project happen. Our super-well-organized parents are going to help us manage the project and will keep us on track. With the great team that we’ve assembled to produce this album, we are sure that we’ll be able to tackle any challenges that arise. To be on the safe side, we’re allowing six months to mix, master, finalize, and publicize the album, so our goal is to release it in June of 2016.
