CitizenSpring is an app that brings water quality testing into the 21st century and empowers individuals to identify safe drinking water, free of lead and other contaminants. Working with readily available water test kits, the CitizenSpring app uses computer vision to read the test results and then uploads the results to a map so everybody can see where it's safe to drink.
Use CitizenSpring to identify safe drinking water for you and your family. Easily test any water source in your community and share the results for all to see.
Lead contamination can be focused in a single building or even a single faucet, but can also cover an entire street or city supply main. And if one of the faucets you drink from tests positive for lead, you simply need more data to know whether you should call a plumber, your building management, your local government, or the EPA.
CitizenSpring aims to be part of the solution by recording not just test results, but also details such as time, date, and location, effectively turning citizens into scientists.
Lead is toxic , particularly in children where it can cause reduced IQ, ADHD, symptoms of autism, and memory disruption, among many other problems. And recently lead has been showing up in our drinking water all across the country , including schools and daycares , and officials have been found systematically delaying and even falsifying public testing records .
Why can’t we just test water at the source?
The issue is that even if an initial source of water is pure, lead can seep into water from the corrosion of old pipes, be it on a whole street or a single faucet. The only way to determine whether water is contaminated is to test each faucet directly, but there are over one billion faucets in the country and local municipalities just don’t have the resources to test every single one.
That’s why we’re creating CitizenSpring and why we need your support! Whether it's at home, the office, at school, or at the park, we want to empower individual citizens to test their own water and share the data on a map.
So that together we can identify where it’s safe to drink, hold our public officials accountable and help set priorities to update our aging infrastructure.
CitizenSpring is more than an app, it’s about creating a movement. Our aim is to give people like you a tool to create change in your own life and in lives of your community. We want to empower people with information to make water quality testing more transparent instead of being centrally organized and largely opaque.
When you use CitizenSpring to test the water in your school or home or any other faucet in your community, and you put the data on a map, you become a Citizen Scientist. You become a part of the solution to identify the patterns of contamination in your community. Right now, local governments and federal agencies just don’t have the resources to test every single faucet.
And that’s where you come in!
Let’s cut through the red tape and blame and take matters into our own hands to create a grassroots movement and help put every water faucet on the map.
My name is Sean Montgomery and I run a technology company called Connected Future Labs. CitizenSpring is my personal mission to leverage the expertise at Connected Future Labs and help make the world a better place by identifying safe sources of drinking water.
As a neuroscientist, I’m acutely aware of how toxic lead is to the body, particularly the developing brain. And I think with a little 21st century ingenuity this is a problem, that together, we can solve. Because our team at Connected Future Labs has a wealth of experience creating apps that capture data in the cloud and using computer vision to solve problems ranging from 3D body imaging to recognition of facial expressions to the augmented reality applications, we know that the technology needed for CitizenSpring is well within our grasp and all we need is your support to make it a reality.
At CitizenSpring, we are a small and dedicated team that believes in the power of technology to connect people and to make a true difference in lives of individuals as well as many.
This is a problem that we can solve!
And we need your support!
We have a working prototype iOS app that can read lead test strips and display strip information on a map.
We need your support to make the following a reality:
- Create a full ios app and backend database to guide you through the process of testing your water
- Refine and cross-validate computer vision algorithms
- Data upload to the cloud + cloud infrastructure maintenance
- Data parsing and loading onto a map
- Help you take the next steps if unsafe lead levels are detected
While each piece of the technology puzzle is squarely within the Connected Future Labs capabilities, every piece requires careful design and engineering to create a lasting impact.
Risks and challenges
At Connected Future Labs we have a depth of experience developing apps and data sharing infrastructures. Our greatest challenge will be dedicating our resources to develop the software in a timely fashion. Given our high level of experience creating cloud-connected apps and computer vision applications we know we can deliver CitizenSpring and we’ll work tirelessly to get the app in your hands as quickly as possible and we promise to keep you updated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
