It’s the age of the geek, so let’s celebrate! The Thirsty Dragon is a café and bar for the clever, curious, kind, quirky, classy and creative – that is, anyone wanting to have a fun and novel time.
Our mission is to create a community in Greenwich and the surrounding area where board-game, food, craft beer and coffee lovers can congregate for games, discussion and good times.
Did you say board games?!
The Thirsty Dragon will have an extensive library of games available to borrow and play (along with brand new copies to buy). We look forward to offering you the ‘classics’, the ‘complex’ and everything in-between. And don’t worry if you can’t decide or don’t know where to start; we’ll offer an online guide and knowledgeable staff to help you choose.
There will be no table rental charges at The Thirsty Dragon (you’re welcome to eat and drink with us as long as you’d like!); however we will have a small library borrowing charge to help keep all our games in great condition.
We want to give you the best possible customer experience. We’ll have a mixture of sofa, booth and modular seating to suit groups of all sizes. There will be extensive sound dampening and semi-private booths to make it easier to concentrate on your games. We’ll even make it possible to order refreshments from your phone so you don’t have to get up mid-round when you’re hungry.
I can’t play on an empty stomach…
The Thirsty Dragon won’t just be about games. We have exciting plans to offer a unique food and drink menu focusing on global flavours from local producers. We asked the community, and they told us they wanted interesting teas, craft beer, healthy choices, vegan options and quality food and drink – so that’s what we’re going to provide! Along with some pub favourites, of course.
Is there anything else to do at the bar?
The Thirsty Dragon will organise and host special play sessions, workshops, trivia, exhibitions and other fun. Our space will showcase the amazing work of local and international artists on the geek scene.
We also want to work with local clubs – both board game and others - to provide a welcoming venue for meetups.
Naturally, we will also have space to book for private or corporate events, and the Thirsty Dragon staff can work with you to set up a schedule of ice-breakers and party games.
So, how do I find you then?
We are planning to open our Greenwich premises in summer 2018 – keep an eye out for the Dragon logo on a shopfront near you! Up to date news on events will be available through our Facebook page and website.
And....who are you?
Originally hailing from Australia, Jane (Chief Meeple) is now a committed Greenwich local. She brings serious board game and RPG geekery, accounting and commercial nous, coffee snobbery and craft beer cred to the Thirsty Dragon. And won’t let the fact that she’s (inexplicably) never won a game of Catan in her life stop her. Standing behind her with a lot of (much appreciated) love and support are many South East Londoners from our great local games clubs.
I want to be a part of this.
Welcome to the community, it’s great to have you here!
At this stage we are committed to opening. We have a premises in the works, our fit-out is planned, and we’re already building up the board games library.
But your help will make the Thirsty Dragon truly perfect! With your support we can make sure the library has the games *you* want (see reward levels). We can maximise creature comforts, and ensure the little luxuries are available (table cup holders anyone?). Your help can make the Thirsty Dragon the home for board gaming in South-East London.
We will use the funds we raise to expand our board games library, to upgrade our tables and seating, and any remaining funds will go towards installing tablet devices at each of our booths so that you can search for online games information and rules - while also ordering a drink - from the comfort of your seat.
You said rewards…?
A community should offer benefits to everyone. So - on top of the warm-fuzzy feeling of helping a small business out, and the tingly-anticipation of knowing you’re securing a new local – we’re offering the following backer rewards:
Give me a closer look!
And if you raise more?
We have some really fun stretch targets planned.
If we raise £5,000 we will install a 'guest tap' for unusual beers from local brewers.
If we raise £6,000 we will create a Thirsty Dragon mug (complete with free hot drink on pick up) for all backers who've pledged £10 or more.
If we raise £8,000 we will finally give in to the pressure and make Thirsty Dragon t-shirts for all backers who've pledged £20 or more.
If we raise £10,000 we will invest in a 3D printer so that we can offer miniature (e.g. HeroForge) and replacement part printing services in store.
Was there anything else you wanted to say?
Thank you. We wanted to say Thank You! The Thirsty Dragon won’t be able to create this amazing community without you – so please pledge, and share far and wide!
Risks and challenges
All business ventures carry some risk, however we believe we have the right advisors, processes, and support in place to make this a success. Getting the right team in place is key, and we have already begun the recruitment process to find the people that will bring the Thirsty Dragon to life.
Being a beneficial part of the Greenwich and SE London community is one of our core values, so we will work with the council to ensure our business is set up to maximise our positive impact on the local area.
