Before Dexmo, there were mainly three types of hand motion capturing available on the market: optical solutions (i.e. leap motion); IMU solutions (IGS gloves, perception neurons); flex sensors (DIY data gloves, 5DT, Cybergolve systems)
1. Optical solutions has higher precision, the cost is low, but they have very limited works space, and if something is blocking the camera, the regeneration algorithm will not have sufficient data to regenerate a full hand model, which happens quite often, therefore being a very exciting technology, current optical solutions are not very suitable for VR.
2. IMU gloves are the mainstream data-gloves at the moment. They are small, portable, can be made up on to a pair of normal gloves, and are relatively affordable though the cheapest unit still cost $15 each. Also they sometimes get disrupted when near electromagnetic fields due to the magnetometers IMUs are using. As the quantity increase, the price of each IMU unit could still drop, and they may have the greatest potential to become a consumer level product in the future. But keep in mind, for now, the cost price of each IMU gloves is still around a hundred dollar each.
3. Flex sensors are generally quite expensive, they provide nonlinear data, and slightly resist your motion. Mostly used for research or for the industry. But they are quite thin as well so they will fit into a pair of normal gloves.
4. Mechanical exoskeleton is bigger in size compare to the rest non-haptic gloves, but please note compare to other haptic gloves, it’s one of the most compact one you could find on the market. Also it is the only method that is capable of providing real force feedback (not vibration) and hand motion capturing at the same time. Cost is another factor. Having the exoskeleton linkage to transmits one’s finger movement onto the inexpensive but reliable rotational sensors, Dexmo avoids the use of expensive sensors like the IMUs and flex sensors. Along with injection molded plastic parts and small metal parts, the cost of the device can be greatly reduced.
