When we checked up on our campaign last night, we were at $3,005, or just over 60% of our goal. This morning, we woke up to see that the campaign had been fully funded. This is incredible! A close friend in Japan was responsible for funding the remaining 40%, which is something that I’m still absorbing.
I really want to thank each of you for all your support of this project! It wouldn’t have been possible to be at this point without you, and this is something that I truly can’t express enough gratitude for.
We have begun work on the professional editing (another first time experience for me), and it is going to be a very involving and time consuming (did I mention exciting!) experience. This is my sole consuming purpose for the remainder of the year, as I am set on getting the best possible story to you in as timely of a fashion as I can.
However, we still have six days left before our campaign officially ends, and there is still a lot that can be done within this time. This gives us a cool opportunity to go a step further and reach people who prefer listening to audiobooks. When we recorded the Chapter 1 podcast, it was done using a webcam microphone, and some easy access freeware. When we record the audiobook for the stretch goal, we will use professional level microphones and software which will greatly enhance the experience. To this end, all additional contributions past our goal will go towards creating a professional-quality audiobook version of Pathways. If a lot more people begin backing the project, then we will think about creating some additional stretch goals, just to mention :-)

We are launching this Kickstarter campaign to help us fund the final editing phase of my science fiction novel, Pathways. The manuscript is fully complete and self-edited, and thanks to some very supportive friends, we’ve received helpful feedback and cool ideas about the story that we’ve incorporated into it. Still, this is the first book I’ve ever written and I want to make sure the story is as strong as it can be, so that is why I’ve decided that professional editing is necessary.
Through the help of your contributions, we will be able to pay for the services of a professional editor, and get the book into a ready-to-publish state :-) You will have an opportunity to get physical, first edition copies of the books, along with some artwork associated with the story and the world. I want to note that a map of the world will also be included in the printed book.
The editing will actually consist of two stages: developmental and line editing. Developmental editing addresses issues or inconsistences in plot and character development, while line editing is a more thorough, line editing deals with content, writing style, and use of language at both the line and paragraph level.
Here is the rough breakdown of the editing timeline.
The developmental editing phase
Begin in August and finish by the end of September at the latest. This includes time that the editor will spend on the manuscript, along with time I spend working through the edits and collaborating with the editor.
The line editing phase
Start in October and finish by the end of November. Just like before, this also accounts for time that the editor spends working on the manuscript, along with the time I spend processing the changes.
With these estimates, we are looking to have the book completely finished up by the end of the year, after which we will engage our printing company to get copies of the book ready to ship to you. We did provide July of 2016 as the absolute latest that we’ll get the books and other rewards to you, but that was only to provide us with a safety buffer, just in case :)
I’ve spent a lot of time writing this book, but for someone who has spent so long on it, it’s kind of odd that I find it difficult to talk about what the book is about, which is something that I really need to improve on, as it’s going to be critical, going forward in my search for a publisher. The story is a different take on science fiction, although many elements may feel familiar. I’ve written numerous descriptions and summaries about the story, but I always feel like they haven’t done the story justice, so I am going to do my best to summarize what it is all about :)
Pathways is an original science fiction story about a young boy named Noren, who lives in a small town that lies upon the trade roads that has fallen upon hard times. It’s not so much that the town has fallen upon hard times, but rather, has been in a perpetual state of trouble, as harsh tribute requirements have been imposed upon them by the ruling body of the land.
While Noren is one of the characters that is first introduced and though the story does revolve around him, there has been a lot going on that he isn’t aware of. As he is going about his daily tasks, he happens to discover an artifact of great power from ancient times, one that has sat long dormant.
Without giving away too much, this discovery acts as a catalyst that triggers many changes in his life, and sets events into motion that will take him far away from his home and the people he cares about. Over the course of his journey, he pieces together an insidious plot that has been laid out against him from long before he was born, and uncovers secrets that will alter his destiny and change the face of his world forever.
We can't begin to thank you enough for your support, both financial and emotional, to turn this book into a reality. Please browse through the various pledge levels and rewards, and feel free to contact me regarding any questions you may have!

Here are some excerpts from the book:
The town monolith stood beside the well. It was not very wide, but it was tall; a good couple meters taller than Noren was. It consisted of an unbroken piece of pitch black stone that had five edges at the bottom and grew narrower towards the top, forming a point.
Noren had always been fascinated by the marker, like other children, but he had quickly outgrown the amusement that came from trying to find ways to scuff its surface. He also remembered the way that other children tried their best to either burn, stab, scrape or hack at the stone; but nothing ever worked.
Every town had such markers apparently, and although Noren had never ventured very far from town, he had heard Richards speak of such things on different occasions. These were the kinds of thoughts that Noren was having when he realized that a glow was coming from inside the depths of the marker.

A continual humming sound filled the air as vibrations resonated throughout the floor and the walls. Fina walked the lengths of the sprawling subterranean complex alone. After walking what always seemed like forever, she finally reached the first set of doors that would only allow her to pass if she provided evidence of her unique mental signature.
Welcome back, Fina, came a familiar voice from all around her. She opened her eyes to the sight of the open doors. After taking a moment to regain her orientation, she walked through the doors. The corridor narrowed for some ways past this point, then grew larger again, leading into a large chamber with a translucent wall on the far side. An intense light was pouring in through it. The liquid core of Alora swam and danced in front of her eyes, turbulent and powerful. She placed her hand on the invisible wall and thought, open, extend.
A translucent corridor opened and extended out, surrounded by swirling magma on all sides. Taking a deep breath, she strode out into the fiery core. Fina devoted a marginal portion of her mind to maintain the barrier around herself. She pressed onward, the corridor extending just far enough ahead of her to keep her safe. She walked until the point that she entered from was a tiny point in the distance behind her. After a long five minutes and twenty three seconds, she arrived at her destination, the very heart of the world; a spherical device, no larger than the size of her fist, anchored in a sea of magma.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge that may potentially arise after successful funding would be scheduling time with editors, along with coordinating printing schedules with our printing company.
We have carefully searched for just the right editor and printing partners for the project, and have their complete support in finishing up the book in as timely of a manner as possible. We too are absolutely committed in getting this novel in its finished state as quickly as possible, and we will work tirelessly to make sure this happens.
I also want to list out the ways in which we plan on allocating funds that we raise from this project.
Editing costs: $3000
Printing costs: approximately $1500
Taxes and fees: approximately $500
