About this project

The Endless RPG random dungeon generator will be an iPhone, iPad and Android app that allows players to input the number of characters and the level range of the party. The generator will use this information to create a random dungeon with various rooms populated with furniture and items like braziers, alters, etc.

As the party explores the dungeon, encounters will be revealed in plain text descriptions with the number of monsters and some basic stats.  Players will also encounter randomly generated treasure and traps as they explore the dungeon.   All of this will be communicated using plain text.

The Endless RPG random dungeon generator is not a game!     

It simply provides a random map populated with monsters, traps and treasure. You will be able to explore the dungeon as if it were a game, but the actual consequences (combat, taking damage from falling in a pit, etc.) will be up to the players.  

What systems will be supported: D&D 5e and Pathfinder are planned. The initial release may only support one of these systems.  

How to play SOLO: Be fair. You are playing by yourself, so you must DM the monster encounters.  

How to play IN A GROUP: Rotate being the DM in combat. This is a great way to play through the dungeon. When it is your turn to be DM, take a backseat and let the other player(s) guide combat while your character does the basics. Let your character shine when others DM.  

What will it be like?  The best way to get an idea of how the dungeons will end up looking is to play my Endless Adventures party-based roguelike.  This kickstarter project is to pay for new graphics that I think will work better with a pen & paper version but will be roughly of the same caliber as Endless Adventures.  Travel through the dungeon should work in a similar manner, however, the entire level will be generated before the players step foot into the dungeon rather than the explore as you go method used in the game.

What mobile platforms will it be released on?  The app will be released on the Apple App Store, the Google Play store and the Amazon Appstore.  It will support modern devices that run on iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android (Samsung Galaxy, Amazon Fire, etc.)

How do I offer my suggestions?  I have an Endless Roguelike Facebook page that you are welcome to use for suggestions.

Is the name really going to be Endless RPG?  Maybe?  The final naming will come at some other point.  It may simply be the "Random Dungeon Generator" or something similar and generic, or it may be Endless RPG. 

Stretch Goals

  • $600.  The generator will feature dungeon 'themes' that will help color the dungeon with both objects on monster groups.  For example, a Necromancer's Crypt would have objects that you would expect to find in a crypt (coffins, etc.) along with monster groups such as skeletons, zombies, etc.  Meanwhile, a tower taken over by cultists would have groupings of clerics, mages and demons.  
  • $1,000. Simple quests and some DM controls.  These quests would be basic in nature and would be used to provide some depth to the adventure.  For example, villagers may be having problems with undead overrunning a deserted graveyard on the outskirts of a nearby woods. When players investigate, they find the aforementioned Necromancer's Crypt.  The DM controls would allow game masters to choose a specific location and encounter theme.  This would allow a DM to quickly put together a tower filled with orcs without needing to spend the time plotting out the map and detailing each encounter.  
  • $2,000.  The basic $300 goal is to pay for some simple tile-based graphics to be used for the app.  At the $2000 mark, more graphics can be bought to help expand the themes and allow for a greater variety in locations.
  • $10,000+.  A Windows version of the app will be released.  This version would be functionally the same as the iPhone/iPad/Android version of the app.

Note: Some of these stretch goals may be implemented even if the specific amount is not achieved.  My goal is to create a great app for both players and game masters that want a way to build a quick adventure, and as such, I am not going to hold a specific feature hostage to a dollar amount.  So view these as basic goals of what I think can be achieved.

Risks and challenges

I have developed a random dungeon generator intended for this purpose in the past. The app had very basic graphics and was designed around D&D 4th edition rules.

I have also developed a series of rogue-like games for the iPad, iPhone and Android. Rogue-like games feature random dungeon levels.
