WHAT ARE SUPERSONIC POD COMICS?
Supersonic Pod Comics are "comics for your ears" - superhero stories told through audio drama form as a weekly podcast! We've created four different series that will release one episode a month, telling the ongoing story of some unique, relatable, fun and inspiring heroes.
Our team of creators include podcasters, comic book writers and character artists who are fans of great stories and storytelling.
Ben Avery and JS Earls, the creators of our first four series, have been professionally working in the comic book industry for twenty years, and have also worked in animation, prose, audio drama and even puppets! Now they want to bring all those different storytelling experiences in all those different mediums to create a brand new, exciting superhero universe in an audio format!
WHY USE AN AUDIO FORMAT FOR SUPERHERO STORIES?
SUPERSONIC Pod Comics takes inspiration from a number of different storytelling styles and mediums:
1. Radio Dramas - Superheroes have a long history with radio (did you know kryptonite first appeared in Superman's radio series, before it appeared in comics?) and now the podcasting phenomenon has brought an audio drama renaissance. The audio format allows us to bypass some of the usual costs associated with distribution of print media (no printing costs, distribution fees and shipping costs) and the acting and sound design allow the storytelling images to be created on the greatest canvas available — your imagination.
2. But we ARE looking at Comic Books and the storytelling conventions they use as well. Namely, we have created a single universe that the characters from our four main series inhabit, and each month brings a new chapter in each of our four main series. Fans of comics will know why we're choosing Wednesday as the day we'll release episodes (it's the day comic shops put the newest issues of comics on their shelves).
3. We're also looking at the story structure and "universe building" that the Big Franchises (as well as traditional comic book publishers) use, in that we will have our four individual series with their own style and stories, but these four series are also connected to each other and form a larger narrative.
4. Finally, of course, there's the Podcast phenomenon that makes content delivery fast, free and easy! But we're not a big business seeing a new format to exploit. Ben, JS, and Nathan James Norman have been in the trenches creating innovative podcasts for years.
SUPERSONIC Pod Comics takes all our experiences in comics and podcasting and allows us to share the kinds of long form storytelling we've been longing to tell!
HOW WILL THESE STORIES BE RELEASED?
One episode of SUPERSONIC Pod Comics will be released free, every week, in podcast format and will be delivered whatever podcast apps that you already use.
We're so excited to share these stories and characters with you. Ben and JS have brainstormed a fun first season storyline populated with cool heroes and strange villains, action and adventure, and heart and meaning.
We've scheduled out a weekly release that stretches from May to the end of the year for Season One.
WHAT'S THE MONEY FOR?
While we're able to avoid some of the high costs that would come from publishing four series month after month, there are still costs involved in this format.
1. PODCASTING COSTS: website and file hosting for all the episodes.
2. PRODUCTION COSTS: Actors, Producers, Sound Effects & Music. By paying for these essential elements, we will be able to create high quality, consistent content.

AND DON'T FORGET!
If you or someone you know wants to audition for one of our voice-acting roles, we just need talent + a good microphone. All APRIL long, we're gonna' have auditions for a variety of roles. And...if our Kickstarter is successful, we'll be paying voice actors $100 per hour. (This rate is per cumulative hour of FINALIZED dialogue time as it is used in our episodes, with a guaranteed 1-hour minimum for lead actors. In other words, actors may want to record one line forty-two times, but the pay rate based on our Kickstarter budget is for the lines as they appear in the episode.)
Risks and challenges
The main risk for a project like this is simply production time. This is a big undertaking with an aggressive schedule and it will rely on a number of different moving parts, from scripting to actors delivering their lines to editing it all together. A slow down in the flow of any of these areas will affect the other areas, which could lead to delays. And unlike network television, reruns will not be an option!
But we are dedicated to doing this in a timely manner with the highest quality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
