(This synopsis repeats itself from the video)
After setting the scene and introducing the characters, the storyline quickly dives into conflict between Brindal, a young witch, and her magic broom named Broom.
As the title indicates, Brindal has made a mess of things, quite literally as well as figuratively. Broom gets stuck cleaning up the literal mess. It becomes obsessive, leaving him with little time for anything else. All the while, Brindal just wants to go flying!
As a gap grows between the two friends, Broom finally snaps! How will Brindal react? Will they ever find the harmony and adventure which they both seek?
Spoiler alert...there will be adventure!
What sets this book apart?
Two things stand out to me. First, my original character, Broom, is fresh, memorable, and eye catching! He is fun to look at, with his goofy straw body and big shiny blue eyes popping out at you. Given that he is a magic broom, a compelling dynamic is created between Broom and his best friend, Brindal, a young witch. Secondly, the illustrated scenes offer so much variety, yet fit together as one cohesive visual story. Various perspectives, beautiful colors, and moody lighting make each scene enchanting and exciting. There is also a fun surprise at the end of the story that always makes me smile. Get ready to grin, my friends! : )
How was the artwork created?
Each spread is digitally illustrated in photoshop using a Wacom tablet and my drawing hand...that would be the right one. Each illustration is teaming with details that will keep your young ones engaged while the words of the book trail off into distant noise...just joshin’, the story is good too! They will listen. There are critters scurrying about in almost every scene, and something new to discover every time you turn the page.
What does The Witch’s Mess offer beyond pretty pictures?
Beyond its visual appeal, The Witch’s Mess has a compelling plot, a gripping dilemma, relatable characters, and valuable lessons for children. On the surface, the book may give a child the incentive to clean up after themselves, but more important are the underlying lessons about relationships, compromise, self-sacrifice, and forgiveness. The lessons are accessible, but not preached. Bold claims, huh? Go ahead, reserve your book and judge for yourself!
About the artist.
My name is Jason Bessler. I am an author and illustrator of children’s books. Well...one to be exact, but who’s counting! Though The Witch’s Mess is my first book, I am confident that it won’t disappoint. I’m 26 years old, I’m kinda’ weird, and I like burritos. I live in KY across from Cincinnati, OH. You can call me Uncle Jase...my favorite title given to me by my two amazing little nephews. Their baby sister and little cousin aren’t talking yet, but I love all four of them so much!
My goal and my dream as an artist is to create memorable works of art and to tell stories that impact people's lives in a positive way. I am hopeful that The Witch’s Mess will do just that!
The Story Behind The Story.
It all began one beautiful morning in 1991 when I was born…hmmm, let's fast forward 23 years. It was my fourth and final year at The Art Academy of Cincinnati, illustration class, 2014. Our professor assigned our next project, a complete picture book dummy. I suppose comics and other forms of storytelling were acceptable, but I wanted to create a children’s picture book dummy from the start! My style has always leaned towards the fun and whimsical and I have always been drawn to artwork in children’s books. Most of my peers got to work right away illustrating an existing story of their choosing, or a story they had already thought up. But I didn’t have a story in mind that I wanted to illustrate, so I wrote one! A couple of days before the picture book dummy was due, I realized I had spent all of my time writing. My illustrations, regardless of how loose they were allowed to be, were not even started! I was having so much fun that I got lost in the writing. On the due date, I showed up with a pile of miserable illustrations with a rough draft of my first original children’s book manuscript. Don’t worry, I got a good grade for my efforts and for turning in a complete book dummy. A while after graduating from the Art Academy, I pulled out that same story. I liked what I read and decided at that moment that I was going to share it with the world’s young readers. It’s been a wild ride, but after countless hours of working on the story and putting life into the illustrations, this project has led me here. I am so happy that you have found your way here as well! Cheers to you and your dreams! Now, go and get them! But first, get out your wallet and support mine! Haha.
What are the book specs?
The Witch’s Mess is a 40 page (34 illustrated pages) hardcover children’s book. The interior pages are a sturdy 105 lb. paper with a matte finish, measuring 8.5x11 inches. Each book also comes with a beautiful dust jacket.
New to Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is an opportunity for me to build a community of people who believe in me and my art, and who want to take part in bringing my projects to life. Also, through this community, I hope to gauge the value that my book brings to those who acquire it.
Where will the money go?
Your pledge will go towards a variety of expenses:
- Manufacturing/Offset Printing: Offset printing only makes sense for large volume orders as the setup is much more time consuming and expensive than digital printing. Also, the quality is superior.
- Shipping supplies / shipping costs: This one is self explanatory : )
- Kickstarter fees: Kickstarter takes 5% of the total amount raised and an additional 3%-5% payment processing fee will be charged.
- Various expenses that this project has already incurred include: Copyright fee, ISBN#'s, Barcode, Website design, eBook formatting, and offset printed proofs to name a few.
- Marketing: Kickstarter is just the beginning of The Witch's Mess! Hence the name, KickSTARTer.
My funding goal is to cover my expenses as a self publisher. Hopefully, we can get the book off the ground, reach my goal, surpass my goal, and hit the ground running! Let’s do this!

Risks and challenges
The book has been written, edited, illustrated, edited some more (this time by a professional), and it is at a really great place. Much of this is new to me; manufacturing and shipping on a large scale is an example. I am, however, prepared to work hard to deliver on my promises. I also have an incredibly supportive family, some with business experience, as well as a smart guy named James who truly believes in this project and has helped me behind the scenes where I may have fallen short otherwise.
I have chosen to go with a company called PrintNinja for my book manufacturing needs. I am confident in the quality product they will deliver as I've already spent the extra money to see offset printed proofs of my interior pages and have experienced the quality of their products in person.
Now, I need your support! Please join our community and share this project with others who won't want to miss it! Thank you so much! I would love to hear from you! Feel free to leave a comment : )Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
