We're back, and we're at it again!
From the team that brought you "Food: An Atlas," "Water: An Atlas" is a collection of over 80 maps cooperatively-created by the guerrilla cartography community, a loose band of people who are passionate about geography or water, or both. The atlas endeavors to map water in its myriad contexts and conditions at all scales of research and geography. Dealing with subjects as varied as the location of mythological water creatures, hydroelectric power sources in India, algal growth, and so much more!

We also have a great section just for kids from our friends at Mission:Explore
The atlas fuses traditional cartography, poster art, infographics, and journalistic text blocking to create the map as a narrative device. Maps are a fantastic medium for illuminating complicated issues, and water is an exciting and compelling theme to explore. While water is an incredibly important aspect of all our lives, few of us have a comprehensive understanding of current water systems. By exploring and mapping the world of water we are able to gain a better understanding of the role water plays in our lives and our communities, and how it fuels our imagination. The caliber of scholarship and artistry invested in these maps is impressive—they are informative and thought provoking, they are beautiful and they give shape to the world of water.
We are raising $25,000 to fund the printing of our atlas, the sales of which help to fund our ongoing map education and future atlas publications. If we beat our goals, additional funds will be used to support Guerrilla Cartography's activities and mission, including distributing more atlases to schools and libraries around the world.
JOIN THE COMMUNITY Through this project, a community has been cultivated around the geography of water. We invite you to join the community, by either funding the project and/or submitting a map. We will put you on our collaborators and backers map, which will be published in the atlas! Check campaign updates to find yourself on the map!
Risks and challenges
As a cooperatively-created, crowd-sourced and crowd-funded project of guerrilla cartography and publishing, our atlas provides many opportunities as well as risks. We have identified and considered the risks we can see.
Risk: Crowd-sourced content
Because the project is a collaborative effort by volunteers, there is the risk that not every map currently in the editing process will make it into the atlas. For reasons beyond anyone’s control, one or another map may have to be abandoned. This risk is mitigated by the fact that most of the map content is secured and in final editing.
Risk: Delivering the Product
There is a risk that printing and delivery of the atlas will be delayed by circumstances beyond our control.
This is our second publication and we feel confident that we will deliver as beautiful a product as our first atlas! We recently received a grant from Furthermore: a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund that covers part of the cost of publishing "Water: An Atlas" and we look forward to bringing the book to life!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
