My name is Spencer Davis and I am the sole-creator of the Booty Babe line of collectible statues and toy figurines. I have a degree in Industrial Design and I worked for one of the world's largest toy manufacturers for 10 years before deciding to take my small business full-time and move to Las Vegas, NV. Fifteen years later, I am nearly sold out of every statue that I have ever produced.
My plan (my goal) is to manufacture FIVE new, 1/6th scale, limited edition, cold-cast porcelain, Booty Babe Art statues and ensure the future of my small, (just me) business.
The vendor that I most trust and have had the best results working with in the past requires a minimum order quantity, that which will fill a 20' foot shipping container. While the total cost estimate is an intimidating chunk of cash, this shipment alone promises solid sales for years to come and will ensure that the Booty Babe brand can continue to flourish into the future. The original Booty Babe pose (which I introduced back in 1998) has proven to be a timeless Classic. The sexy yet innocent charm appeals to both male and female customers. And with the longevity of sales that I can expect from this project I can look forward to developing various, different poses and offerings in the future. But without the success of this project, the outlook is uncertain. (Maybe I will become a realtor..!) I joke, but it's true; Being an independent producer of high quality, collectible statues and toys has become increasingly difficult. Prices of materials, labor and shipping have all gone up exponentially. It is definitely not as profitable these days, but it truly is my passion.
MY PRODUCTION PLAN:
At the conclusion of this campaign, if I am successful, I will immediately send my tooling masters and painted samples (prototypes) to the vendor in Hong Kong. Once they have received my (turn over package) including directions and samples, I have received the following message from the factory, which explains what we can expect regarding the production time for this series:
"...It takes 45 working days for the tooling, 30 working days for sample making and approval, and 60 working days for mass production. And please kindly note that the Chinese New Year holiday on early February, there will be 2 weeks holiday for our factory. Please take account of the holiday for the production. For the shipping time from HK to Long Beach, CA, it takes about 15 days."
Making cold-cast porcelain statues is not high-tech. The process has changed very little over the course of decades. But it is quite labor intensive. First, rubber molds (soft tooling) must be made for each individual style. Then material is poured into the molds. When the parts are removed from the molds, a lot of effort goes into cleaning the solid cast parts; sanding and smoothing them along the parting lines before they can be assembled and painted. And, in addition to the attention to detail that goes into most collectible statues, my figures also get soft-goods outfits; dresses that need to be sewn. Plus, their hair styles are rooted onto wig caps which are then applied to the statues at the very last step of assembly. Protective, polyfoam packaging will also need to be engineered and a separate mold is created specifically for that purpose. All goes into a corrugated, cardboard box. (The package is designed to survive a three foot drop test.) In general, the process requires 5-6 months in total, before I will receive the shipment of NEW statues that I am planning to produce. (So, to be on the safe side, I am asking that backers allow 7 months for delivery.)
MY FULFILLMENT PLAN / MY PLEDGE to YOU:
Once I receive the NEW statues, I will begin shipping the rewards out to backers immediately. I am already accustomed to wrapping and shipping orders as part of my daily routine. So fulfilling these expectations is part of what I already do. I will ship all Domestic orders via Priority USPS (smaller orders) or UPS Ground (for larger parcels.) In any case, they will have a tracking number. International orders may take up to three weeks. As for prints and some of the items that I am preparing myself, locally in the U.S., those items could very likely arrive much sooner. (See reward descriptions for further detail.)
If you enjoy what I do, I would very much appreciate your support! If you like the 'spirit' of what I do but do not imagine one of my pop-art inspired, sexy statues in your home, please consider the more 'fine-art' inspired pieces that I make from my own home studio, right here in Las Vegas, Nevada U.S.A. And if price is what's holding you back, simply SHARING a link to this project through social media is sometimes just as helpful. THANK YOU for viewing my Kickstarter project! Risks and challenges
One of he biggest challenges, when doing a production of this size is QUALITY CONTROL and staying true to your design. Fortunately I have been through this process of Design and Development with overseas factories on numerous occasions. And I believe my past product speaks for itself. I have already made arrangements to work with my most trusted Hong Kong based vendor. We have always communicated well and he is aware of my expectations. Having said that, sourcing fabric can sometimes be tricky. There is no guarantee that the fabric you find in the Garment District in L.A. for example, will be exactly the same fabric they have available in the Orient. That is why I will hand pick the fabric myself locally, to ensure that it has the right amount of elasticity, shimmer appearance etc. Still, what is available one day, may be discontinued the next. So please bear with me if the fabric on the production pieces is slightly different than that on the prototypes that are pictured.
Of course SCHEDULE can also be a challenge. But the timeline has been laid out pretty clearly by the factory. And as I mentioned, I've been through the process before, and I will be sure to update regularly with any developments.
