The Mother of Beauty is a dark drama that follows a single mother-to-be who lives in isolation on the edge of the wilderness. She makes a living through her work with vulture culture: using the remains of dead animals to create pieces of art and memorialize the life that once was. As she attempts to overcome the struggles of parenthood, the forces of life and death pull her in opposing directions, and she must find a way to reconcile the two before they tear her apart.
The world of vulture culture remains a largely unexplored. Most people have never even heard of it, and there are almost no films on the subject. With our film, we hope to bring exposure to this community and further explore their ideologies through a unique and heartfelt story.
The Mother of Beauty is a short film produced by a group of independent filmmakers in Vancouver, BC. We have teamed up with Amanda West from Artfully Artless, to create a short film unlike any other before and we need your help to get it funded!
Currently, our project has a killer script and is part way through our pre-production phase. We have a locked team and a lot of experience between us. All of us are confident that this story is unique and beautiful and we are certain that this project is worth investing in. While we haven't shot anything yet, we do have custom concept art that can help give you an idea of how the film will turn out.
Unfortunately, that's about as far as we can go until we get more funding. If we receive our full $8,000 goal, here's how we plan to distribute the money:
A majority of the money earned from our campaign will be but towards locations, post production, and our production design budget. Regardless of how much money the project earns, a portion of the budget will be spent on paying all members of our cast and crew. Supporting artists is something we feel very strongly about and we don't want to ask anyone to work on our project for free.
If we were to go above our goal, we would be able to increase our locations budget, giving our project an over all higher quality. The story calls for an isolated house in the woods and while you can always fake stuff like that in the city, nothing can beat the real thing. We'd also be able to get all sorts of cool extra things like a behind the scenes photographer, more unique art pieces for the production, and we'd have the funds to enter the completed film in more festivals.
From left to right, our team includes :
- DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY | Steven Hayes (Night Owl High)
- PRODUCER | Jessica Cole (Ravage)
- DIRECTOR | Nick Meunier (First, Love)
- WRITER | Lonnie Nadler (Vice, The Portrait of Sal Pullman)
- PRODUCTION DESIGNER | Rob Warren (Graft).
Here's where we get to the good stuff. Artfully Artless has created many original art pieces for the show that we are using to promote the film. All of these pieces are completely one-of-a-kind and are hand made.
No animals were harmed in the making of these art pieces. The vulture culture community does not participate in animal cruelty - this work is used to respect death, not cause it!
In addition to everything above, The Mother of Beauty team would like to thank Salmagundi West for allowing us to use their wonderful thrift store to film our Kickstarter video. We'd also like to thank our concept artists Marina Arndt, Eric Zawadzki, and Abby Howard as well as Kelly Haigh for providing us with the fox skull used in the video.
Risks and challenges
The largest challenge we face is creating a high quality product with.... well, basically no money. While we do have some investments from outside sources, our film cannot be made without crowdfunding support.
All contributions to this project give us opportunities to shoot at interesting locations, expand our production design budget, and create more unique art pieces for the film. Supporting this film not only helps the local artisan community grow but it also helps strengthen the independent Canadian film market.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
