About

The Goblin, by Goblin VR, is a groundbreaking, smartphone-powered virtual reality headset that fits in your pocket. It’s a reinvention of Google Cardboard - based on that platform but vastly improved. A sleeker, more comfortable VR experience built around portability, immersion and fun.

Our goal is to create a truly immersive virtual reality world that's affordable and accessible to everyone. To transport you, and everyone else, to the world of your dreams - allowing you to climb Everest or visit North Korea, regardless of where your actual day or night takes you.

The feature that makes The Goblin so special is our unique, patent-pending Pop-Out Black-Out (POBO) system. We believe the technology will become the standard for mid-market VR headsets but, for now, the combination of pocket-sized and full-immersion is available only in The Goblin.

POBO houses the lenses and allows the headset to fold flat. Easy-release hinges attached to the doors and main body hold the mask in place.

The mask is made of soft, malleable neoprene that fits comfortably around the contours of your face. With the snugness of the fit and density of the neoprene blocking out all light.

There is an easy-to-attach strap, offering hands-free enjoyment.

And a neoprene sleeve, to hold any smartphone with a screen of up to 6" securely in place. With cushioning, to protect your phone from scratches when you slide your it in or out.

So you can sit back and control content with this conductive button.

And when you're ready to return to reality, simply collapse the mask, and close the doors on your virtual reality world. Then, slip The Goblin back in your pocket, ready for your next adventure.

Dan, our founder, is a VR enthusiast. His day job was designing and producing 3D animations for corporate clients. Dan has tested many a VR headset. Undertaken many a VR adventure. And after experiencing Google Cardboard he became fascinated by the implications of untethered, mobile VR. Of being able to step into a virtual world anytime, anywhere. Just imagine how powerful and useful a tool like that might be? And imagine… if that was available to everyone.

He began designing ‘The Goblin’. The immediate challenge was to shrink Google Cardboard for ultimate portability. He knew that for a VR headset to deliver a truly breathtaking experience however the headset itself had to be:

  • Immersive, with zero light bleed, so your mind is transported to another world and you're consumed by your new environment;
  • Comfortable, uncompromisingly lightweight, and hands-free, with an attachable strap, so that you forget you're wearing it.

He also knew that for his compact VR headset to be successful, it needed:

  • Superior quality, 35mm lenses;
  • A conductive input button, for all the gamers out there.

And if that wasn't challenging enough, Dan also insisted on it being affordable, and working with all Cardboard-compatible smartphones.

The design developed around optics - making sure that the largest possible lenses could be incorporated into a portable device. The next big challenge was to design a comfortable face mask that could fold down to pocket sized. Immersion was key. And POBO became the mechanism that holds The Goblin together.

After building several prototypes, we were finally satisfied that The Goblin Mk1 fulfilled all of our original criteria. Ultimate portability combined with comfort and full immersion.

We are confident in the design of The Goblin, but now we need YOUR support to take this exciting product through to the manufacturing stage.

Risks and challenges

The team at Goblin VR has many combined years of experience in designing, prototyping, producing, delivering and marketing hardware and software for many a successful project.

We have set a realistic funding goal, to ensure that we have enough funds to produce the MK1 and speedily resolve any issues that may occur. The manufacturers we have enlisted are actively helping us managing our supply chain to streamline the production process. And we have already worked tirelessly to minimise potential delay-creating hiccups. But, as with bringing any product to market, unforeseen risks and challenges may present themselves.

Product Adjustments

As The Goblin comes closer to mass production, there will likely be some minor adjustments to improve the final product. Pre-production prototypes are made to test and refine the product and allow us to incorporate our adjustments and those suggested by our experienced manufacturing partners. These are always undertaken to benefit your experience using the product. If we do make any changes, we will clearly explain exactly how these changes are being made, why they are being made, and their potential impact on the schedule.

Unforeseen Delays

We have already started placing orders for parts that have longer lead times. However, shortages in the supply chain and delays in shipping component parts to us can occur, and are out of our control.

But we are working with manufacturers who have years of experience delivering excellent products in huge quantities. So to minimize the possibility of manufacturing setbacks, we will enter the manufacturing stage with at least one backup supplier for each component part pre-located and lined up, ready to step in.
