About

IMPORTANT: Shipping costs have been greatly reduced thanks to a new potential partner! Therefore, the information in the pledges is faulty; costs for all countries within the EU, but Canada and the US as well, should become lower than €10! Rest of the world will probably be around the €11-€12 mark.

Goblin Glory

A fantasy 1v1 modular deck-building game.

“The Underworld is in turmoil after the Dark One has fallen, and many of his commanders are eager to take over the power. They fight each other in battles of strength and wit, where the survivor will rise to take over the Underworld and seize that Goblin Glory!”

Goblin Glory is a one versus one tabletop card game inspired by games such as Hearthstone and Yu-Gi-Oh, but also by one of my all-time favorites; Dungeon Keeper II (PC strategy game by Bullfrog, 1999). In Goblin Glory, two players take turns in which they can use Gold and Mana to recruit Creature Cards (CC), build Dungeon Upgrades (DU), use Spell Cards (SC), etc., all to reduce the health of the opponent’s Core to zero. In essence, it's a deck building game, so you build your deck while playing the game!

There are more layers to the strategic element of this game though. New creatures are added to your deck when you buy a so-called Dungeon Upgrade (or DU), but there's more to it than that. DUs have traits of their own, from saving gold until your next turn (instead of having to give it to your creatures, only to lose it to your opponent once they are defeated), to sacrificing your dear creatures just for an extra gold piece.

"Ok, first off; why is it in black and white?"

That's what the Kickstarter is for! I'm trying to raise not only enough money to produce the game, but also to pay my illustrator to visualize everything in a unique and fun style. The current header image and the Spell Card backside further down the page are examples of her work.

“So, ehm… What is so special about Goblin Glory?”

Both players start with a small Creature Deck consisting of about 9-10 cards. By building Dungeon Upgrades (there are six of them, most with 2 - 3 tiers) players can shuffles a small pack of cards through their Deck. This allows for a dynamic gameplay in which each player starts with the same possibilities and can build their deck while playing the game, instead of determining a strategy beforehand.

Aside from the deck-building element, Goblin Glory has a unique art-style, along with some dark humor heavily inspired by Dungeon Keeper II. Sacrifice a creature just for a piece of gold? Letting your Dentist torture enemy creatures to learn more about your opponent's hand? It's how you roll.

“Do Dungeon Upgrades have any other uses?”

Example of a DU - building the first tier allows the player to shuffle new cards through his deck, but there is always a trade-off between cost, the creatures it yields and the utility the DU provides

Yes, definitely. Each DU has a special property, most of them can be upgraded by improving the DU to its next tier. Examples of these special properties are to let a Creature rest to heal a bit of damage (“Lodge”) or to use a “Torturer” Creature, for example a Dentist, on a fallen enemy Creature to reveal Cards in your opponent’s hand (“Torture Chamber”).

However, a greed for these Dungeon Upgrades can come back to bite you in the, ehm, bottom, as building multiple DUs in a short span of time will cause your Deck to grow too fast, which will make harder to get that specific Creature you need for your current strategy.

“What about these Creatures? Do they have special properties as well?”

Yes, the Creatures are special as well, and not just because their mommies told them so. All Creatures have one to three “Specials”. There are 16 types of Creatures, and together they have 18 different kind of special properties. Examples are Coward (roll a die to determine the success of an attack), Shapeshifter (can change its stats) and Backstab (take less retaliation damage when this Creature is the attacker).

“What about those Spell Cards you mentioned?”

Spell Cards have the potential to drastically change a turn, but they are a bit harder to get. There are 18 different SCs in total, each player gets two random ones at the start of the game. More can be attained through the “Arcanery” DU, but there is always a trade-off; while the Arcanery has a high utility factor, it only yields four weak Creatures for the Deck.

Two examples of SCs

Examples of SCs are Bribe (pay an amount of Gold and Mana to take over one of your opponent’s Creatures), Inspire Fear (add the “Coward” property to one opposing Creature) and Rent-a-Seer (look at the top three Cards of your Deck and either put them back in the order of your choice, or shuffle the entire Deck).

“What exactly am I paying for when I support this project?”

Currently, the game is just a lot of text on cards, which looks a bit boring. When the goal is reached, the initial profit should be enough to pay the illustrator (who made the backside of the SC as seen above here) to visualize the entire game.

Apart from the artwork, the game is almost finished; only minor tweaks remain, such as slightly altering the stats of a Creature. In the upcoming months I will keep asking close friends and family to help me playtest the game to further refine the game, since, as you can imagine, balance is a very important aspect of this game.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me!

Contents of the base game (before unlocking stretch goals):

  • 144 beautifully illustrated Bridge-sized cards, for two players (so 72 each).
  • 144 custom tokens for Gold, Mana, damage, etc.
  • One d20 (20-sided die)
  • Rulebook.
  • High-quality game box for all contents, with room to spare for any future expansions!*

*If the game is successful enough, more projects will follow to expand this game! I already have a few expansion packs in mind; a few small ones which will add more DUs/CCs (among other things, but I’m not giving away everything just yet), and a big one which would combine up to two base sets and add another type of player (the Hero), making it a 3-5 player game!

Please note that I also have to take into account that I will have to pay 8-10% of the total funding in fees to Kickstarter and its payments partner, Stripe.

Stretch Goals

What's a Kickstarter campaign without stretch goals?

15k - LOCKED Card quality upgrade; from "regular" 300gsm to higher quality 310gsm Linen cards. You will definitely notice the difference!

20k - LOCKED Unique illustrations for each Spell Card (in the "normal" version, only creatures and dungeon upgrades will have unique illustrations).

30k - LOCKED Core HP tokens will be replaced by spinners, making it less of a fuss to adjust your Core HP. Also, since the manufacturer of the game ships tokens on sheets of 72, this will leave room for extra Gold and damage tokens, guaranteeing you will have enough tokens when both players go all-out.

Risks and challenges

The game itself is pretty much finished; I only need to do more playtesting for finetuning minor aspects (such as "does this creature need 5 or 6 HP").

The bulk of the work to be done is illustrating the game, which I need to outsource since I'd like to publish a game which doesn't look like it's been drawn by a 4-year old ;)

Concerning the illustrator, I have good news and bad news; the good news is that I already know who to employ and for how much she will do it, the bad news is that she has other projects as well. But that is why I've chosen to set the delivery to July this year, hopefully this will be enough time (but I cannot guarantee that it will not exceed this by 1-2 months).

Another risk/challenge is the production of the game itself. I've contacted a company asking for sample cards, these looked great and their website seems very professional. But, since this is my first game, I have yet to discover the quality of the rest of their products. I have found multiple companies who can print the game, so there are some back-up plans.
