Nomad Trading Company is Introducing Radical Sustainability into the Beverage World
Hi, We're Nomad. We founded this business to share Radical Sustainability with the world. We do that by making energizing drinks. Today, we're introducing Nomad Energy, our plant based energy drink. Imagine if Red Bull approached their products the way Patagonia approaches clothing. That’s us.
Initially, we developed a line of teas from cascara, or the coffeefruit (more on that below). Pretty quickly, people started telling us that they loved it for the energy it provides, but wished the drink had bubbles, and that it would be better in a more convenient package. They complained about the ingredients of traditional energy drinks, and how the chemicals made them feel. Nomad Energy was born.
So ... What is Radical Sustainability?
Why do we do what we do? To spread Radical Sustainability. Everything we do must meet sustainability requirements in three different areas: environmental, economic and personal.
Imagine if Red Bull Approached Their Product the Same Way Patagonia Does?
Patagonia tries their best to reduce their impact on the environment and promote sustainable living. Nomad Energy is the energy for a health conscious consumer on the go. It solves the problem of convenient energy, in an all natural, healthy package. It satisfies the most demanding of environmental conscious and health focused people. It has the same functionality as a Red Bull, while still fulfilling our mission of radical sustainability.
This brings us to Nomad Energy. We want to share Radical Sustainability with as many people as possible. Energy drinks are the largest segment of the ready-to-drink caffeinated beverage market. Everyone knows that they’re garbage - packed with sugar and chemicals. We need to replace conventional energy drinks with something better, to reach as many people as possible.
We worked for months, honing a recipe. We've done tasting panels at Pilotworks in Brooklyn. We've listened to customer feedback, and looked through big data. We've made something we're really happy with. Imagine your favorite iced tea/lemonade mix, but sparkling and in a can. 120mg of caffeine. Magnesium, potassium. Nutrient dense and refreshing.
Nomad Energy uses only six ingredients to achieve this better result; Cascara, Water, Lemon Juice, Maple Syrup, Himalayan Pink Salt, and Carbon Dioxide (Bubbles). Six ingredients. No bull.
What is Cascara?
Cascara is the coffeefruit. We stumbled upon it while reading James Hoffman's World Atlas of Coffee. It's one of the largest scale underutilized agricultural products in the world, at roughly 24 billion pounds per year. Yet there's no reason for that. It's incredibly nutrient dense. It has as much caffeine as coffee, an incredibly high ORAC score, chlorogenic acid, potassium, and more. It's been brewed as a tea in Yemen, Ethiopia and Bolivia for hundreds of years. Going back 1,000 years, the Oromo tribe of Ethiopia used to mash it up with goat fat to make the world's first energy bar.
We've been brewing Cascara as a tea, bottling it, and selling through retailers like Whole Foods for the past year. Overall, the response has been very positive. In that time, people have asked us for a version with bubbles. They wanted the convenience of a can. And a few months later, here we are.
We tried to introduce radical sustainability in our rewards too by including a t-shirt made from organic cotton and recycled water bottles, going paperless with e-cards, and having stickers made of compostable materials.
We have a big goal. We want to spread Radical Sustainability. To do that, we want to replace conventional energy drinks with Nomad Energy. Kickstarter gives us the opportunity to reach people who believe in the mission, and can be a part of it, by pre-ordering Nomad Energy. Your pre-orders will help us do our first, larger run.
Who are we?
We’re a couple of college friends, tied together by fervent obsessions with the environment, efficiency, and a belief in the not-just-for-profit model. We met at a house party in high school (shoutout to Sydney - you’re the real hero of the story), and then wound up spending our college years together. Today, we live together and work together in Brooklyn, NY. We push each other to grow, and challenge one another daily. We’re so grateful to share our journey with all of you and appreciate you becoming a part of it.
But wait! We have interns! Dan and Jose have joined us for the summer. They’re invaluable members of the team. Dan does more marketing work than we do these days. Jose hustles to make sure we’re on the right shelves for you to buy our stuff.
Risks and challenges
We've been working hard with product developers, a coffee farmer in Costa Rica, a co-packer, a can supplier, label suppliers, and graphic designers to make Nomad Energy absolutely perfect. It is nearing completion, but there are a lot of different parts that go into making this product and there could be potential snags.
Due to recently imposed aluminum tariffs, there is a can shortage in the United States. We've been working closely with our can supplier to ensure that we have cans ready to go, but that is a possible delay we face.
We are committed to having everything ready to go by Labor Day, but if any delays come up, we'll make sure to let you know.
On another note, climate change is real and caused by human action. There are floating islands of plastic in our oceans. There are over 16,000 species facing imminent extinction. What greater risks and challenges are there?Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
