About the Exhibit: Operation Frame
The name of the exhibit is "Operation Frame" because, quite frankly, I need frames. The market in Brazil is brutal for emerging visual artists and I almost went broke preparing and framing the paintings for my last exhibit. I simply can't do that again, so I need your help to make this exhibit break even at the very least.
I need these frames to give the exhibit a professional look. This exhibit is important because it will be in the city center of Curitiba, Brazil, close to the city's most important art fair during a busy time of year, in February - just before Carnival.
But it's not all about the phyisical frames because each of these paintings are also snapshots in time. For me, artistically, this is an important concept because it means that we can freeze - or frame - the world to help us remember that place in that moment in time, or maybe to help us hold that dream in place for when we arrive in the future.
So by framing these paintings, I’m not only talking about the actual frames, but our imaginations as well. If you look at a painting of bottles, where does that take you? How about one of flowers or one of Barcelona? My hope is to create an exhibit that stops time for people, and what better way to do that than to have all the paintings framed.
What I'm Asking:
I am asking for your support to help with framing and other hanging supplies to make this exhibit more professional. I need help with six or seven frames, which are expensive and beyond my financial means. Without your help I will not be able to frame these or exhibit these paintings.
What You Get:
What do you get out of this? Obviously the artistic rewards as a result of your pledges (from contribution recognition to reusable greeting cards to postcards from Brasil (with Brazilian stamps!) to original artwork to commissioned paintings), but it's more than that. You get the opportunity to help an emerging artist get his name out there and show his work. All too often the world asks artists of all types to work for free: Kickstarter campaigns such as this help to break those expectations and allow artists to create more freely and, to be blunt, put food on the table and pay rent.
Several of the to-be exhibited pieces are available as rewards here on Kickstarter. You can see those in this blurb. The rest will be available for purchase at the exhibit.
These are expressionist paintings painted by me, Greg Mason Burns, and were created during my time in Curitiba, Brazil.
I am a painter who uses bold colors to create expressive paintings. My artistic inspiration is Ernest Hemingway, thus my paintings are declarative in nature. Brazil has many contrasts in it's culture, and these have greatly influenced my emotions and, thus, my art.
I originally left my job in healthcare finance in Boston to pursue my more natural creative side. My first landing spot was in Chile (without knowing a word of Spanish), but I met a girl from Brazil and followed her there (without knowing a word of Portuguese), which is where I currently live (I can order a beer in Portuguese now). I am originally from Bar Harbor, Maine, and am a graduate of both the University of Maine and the University of Edinburgh.
Exhibits such as this are of huge importance to me, as they allow me the freedom to both pursue my creative dreams and to build my resume for future projects (see my bio for more info). I greatly appreciate your support, and let's all keep our fingers crossed for a successful campaign and exhibit.
