May Update - Fulfillment still in progress and KS-3 launch date

Hello Shieldmaiden backers!

By now most of you have received the parcels containing the rewards of this project! :-D

Shieldmaiden painted by backer Carlos von Farkas
Shieldmaiden painted by backer Carlos von Farkas

The project is not yet over though, so please expect at least 2 more updates before we wrap this up! This month's update will be divided in the following sections

  • Some people never paid for their P&P
  • Backers that still haven't received their pledges even if they paid P&P
  • Missing items from pledges
  • Packaging of the parcels/ Boxes
  • Overall view of the final result
  • KS-3 launch date

Let's start! :-)

Some people haven't paid for shipping

As you well know shipping was to be charged after the project ended and close to the delivery date, as was very clearly written on our main campaign page when the project launched.
We informed people from the December update that we would commence collecting on January. On January's update we specified the "how to" and provided the link (which doesn't work anymore since the deadline passed). Due to many people missing out on that, we re-opened it a 2nd time in February and left it open till March 6th. Even after that we scrambled to squeeze latecomers all the same. The deadline however was pushing and we didn't want DHL to have an excuse to back from the deal we had struck with them regarding tracking numbers which we secured for you without any additional charges.

It is only logical to clarify that it would be a financial idiocy (I don't know how to put it any better terms, apologies) to have parcels sent out without having received the funds to cover the respective costs. This is also the main reason this update is coming up a week earlier than we had planned for.
Ever since we came back from our vacation we are interacting with people asking "where is my parcel since I have paid for shipping", only to find out they had actually never paid for shippping and therefore (obivously) nothing was mailed to them! Thankfully both backers and Shieldwolf Team are very patient and polite and messages being dealt with since we are all after the same thing, we want to send you the rewards as much as you want them received :-)
To resolve this issue we are interacting and invoicing each and everyone separately. This is a very time consuming process and we calculate it will take almost the entire month. Worst case scenario early June.

Backers that still haven't received their pledges even if they paid P&P

This is a trivial number; we calculate that it's no more than 10 parcels in total, which never reached you for 3 reasons (a couple of them was our overlook, others DHL couldn't trace you, and finally Brazil and Russia being a no-man zone).
Any parcel we received that was returned has already been slinged back via ELTA Greek Postal Service (holds a very solid reputation). Same will go for any following parcel, we will certainly not charge you a 2nd time as that's not your responsability.

We expect DHL to supply us with the final report tomorrow, therefore we will have in our hands the exact list of what went where and who signed for what.

Missing items from pledges

From a first assessment we see that most pledges had no errors in the packaging. The most common of all seems to be the missing Dragon Riders, which we commenced making new moulds and are now casting to cover that

Shieldmaiden dragon riders being cast
Shieldmaiden dragon riders being cast

 We will eventually sent everything out to people missing this or any other items but please have patience as this takes a lot of time to find out what's missing where, crosscheck with our data and mail. In order to clarify by "a lot of time" we mean end of June.

Packaging of the parcels/ Boxes

We did our best to make sure that your items arrived as safely as possible, knowing the abuse they usually undertake when travelling around the world. Some packaging wasn't addmittingly optimal but we tried our best. For any broken items please don't hesitate to take a picture and contact us in order to make up for that.
The intention was to send everything in retail packaging, both plastics and resin items. Some resin items were taken out of the blisters+foam and put in small plastic bags because the volume of the parcel exceeded the limits. Those we could fit stayed as they were. As far as the boxes for the plastics, some people may unfairly think that was did that to save a few pennies. They are partially correct. We did that in order to save up, but not pennies, time! Unlike our Mountain Orc kit, the retail boxes for our plastic kit were not printed in Greece but in the UK. They were delivered IIRC on the 24th of April. We knew they had delayed and therefore chose not to wait for them since our plastic is solid enough and should have resisted without them on top of we having already delayed we didn't want to stall an longer.
Perhaps we should have asked you first but although we thought of it we decided not to. The reason is very straightforward, there was the logical scenario that some would have wanted with boxes and some without. Logistically a nightmare!

Overall view of the final result

We are very content with what we delivered but it's naturally more important to know what you think. We take it for granted that having a 100% satisfactory response is impossible, but we hope the percentage is high enough to justify both the funds, time and effort committed by both sides. And it does take a lot of effort and a whole lot of things many will never hear about.

Here's one of the initial lay-outs for example you had never seen before
...

The matter of the spears we have seen mentioned should also be addressed. We had already spoken more than enough in the comment section but it's best to clarify it in another update also since it's apparently not clear to eveyrone. And it si fair enough to say that it is our responsability for that, no argument here.
Even during the campaign we said that the bident would probably be dropped as it didn't fit the theme (update #13) and that we would add a single spear and then try to break the banner up to also make optional spears out of it. Good idea, not easy to tool the way we had designed it though; it ended up costing us additional funds and considerable amount of time and effort, only to realize in the end that we had to drop it completely. A single spear repeated 2-3 times per box would have been inadequate since even four boxes wouldn't have enough to make a 20man strong spear version. We did walk away with the augmented expereince on tooling and in order to make sure any confusion or bad communication from our side is avoided in future projects, we will be only putting up renders of type of weaponry that will be tooled 100%.
Finally, for anyone asking why we didn't substitute the render in the main page as it features on the front, try to remember it was a 15 day campaign with a lot happening, it simply slipped by. Once the final decisions on tooling had been taken, it would have been ill considerate to remove it after the project ended. If for any reason you think we did this on purpose, please feel free not to support us ever again. For the record, we certainly didn't do it on purpose.

I'm also sharing with you a (funny) point of view on our wolves for example, we copy pasted their exact texts:
Australian backer from a wargaming forum: […]The wolves are just terrible. The heads are enormous and don't fit the bodies without a load of green stuff work. They also have really derpy smiling faces and don't look in the least intimidating. [...] Wolves are going in the bin…[…]
Malta backer in private message via KS: […] Since the quality of the ice wolves is superb, I would also like to get a blister of Great Wolves so I would have both type of wolves. […]

We deliberately don't mention their names but we thought it would be interesting to share with you some of the things we see from the creator's side :-)

KS-3 launch date

Those of you who received their rewards should have got this by now

Shieldwolf Miniatures enters the sci-fi market
Shieldwolf Miniatures enters the sci-fi market

For some of you this may not mean much but for us it does since Shieldwolf had never done any science fiction miniatures. Our research indicates that a lot of our supporters -even those who didn't back the Shieldmaiden project- would however be interested in us offering these in our next project. The change was very drastic and we will see where it brings us.
This project with your support allowed us to create not only the most affordable but also the only complete Female Barbarian fantasy army. With the augmented knowledge we received from this project, Shieldwolf Miniatures looks even higher and we mean to raise the bar like never before! A Female Paladin fantasy army, a Female Paladin space army and a Shieldmaiden Space army done in hard plastic and offering huge affordability has never been done before (to our knowledge at least) and we are more than happy to pick up the glove and attempt to make this into a reality. With your help it can be done! :-)

As you know as an additional token of appreciation, we gave the backers of this project here the decision of what comes first. So, Wolf Wardens come first, just like you asked for. We are even considering to tilt our Warmaidens (who we are looking very forward to since it will allow us not only to create a very unique faction but also prove the super dynamic posing we can offer with our know-how) in favor of the Paladin faction as we mean to supply not only our supporters with a wider range but also commence supporting the Talliareum faction. We would like to know what you think of this.

Finally, the date of the KS-3 (we are calling it like that to abbreviate) was May 30th, but recent developments have resulted in that KS-3 launch date will be postponed, probably for the end of the Summer.
We are all very eager to launch it and create more unique goodies, but we cannot allow backers from this project not to be dealt with first! Considering you might have been in their place -even if you happen to be among those who already have your rewards in front of you- we think you will agree with us.

I think that is all for now, as always please comment/suggest below!

Thank you.

The Shieldwolf Team.

      @Shieldwolf, I think a SG for spears would be very welcomed by the community especially if there is enough for a full 20 "man" squad ;)

      @David
      The feedback is greatly appreciated. Each box came with 20 bases, if you kitbashed a few more though there were infact no spare bases included. If for some reason we didn't supply each box with a 20 bases bag, please let us know.
      I would like to clarify with the opportunity of your comment that the Shieldmaidens have been tooled, there's almost nothing more we can do about it (I write "almost" since we intend to insert the missing banner version under the Champion's Shield for the Warmaiden kit since they share almost the same command). What *can* be done about the spears is have a separate stretch goal for the Warmaidens providing spears as an option; these being intrachangeable with the Shieldmaidens could serve your purpose.
      As for plastic wolf riders, we have specific layouts on our upcoming KS-3 but as much as we'd like to see them for that to happen things must really blow up. While we are doing everything in our power to finally have our "big" KS project, we will be content to see the next project fund and provide an additional 2 plastic kits in our range :-)

    5. David on May 16

      Shieldwolf, overall I am very pleased with the Shieldmaidens that I received. I was pleasantly surprised to see four unique heroins were included. I felt like there was enough diversity of bodies, heads, right arms, and weapons, and I liked that I could put cloaks on some of them to further spice things up. I would have liked to see more left arms though. Since I did not want so many standard bearers and musicians I simply cut some of those left arms out of the standards and trumpets and slapped a shield on it. Doing that, there were just enough left arms. The package also did not have enough bases for all of my ladies but luckily I had just enough extra bases in my hobby supplies. The Shieldmaidens are a bit taller than my other 28mm miniatures, but I can live with that. They are overall a very good looking bunch!
      If you see fit to make new types of Shieldmaidens in the future then I hope you make some spearwomen and maybe some wolfriders who can be armed either with spears or handweapons.

      Hi guys, please proceed in sending us a message via KS, someone (i.e. probably Dimitrios) is going to be on top of that. If you have already done so, please disregard.
      Comments regarding delivery or other issues in the comment section risk being overlooked. Like we told @Lois underneath (and I see @Alan's #810 too), having your order # handy from our webstore when messaging us will help saving time in getting this resolved.
      As for @Alan's, I will have to crosscheck with DHL's data report to see what's up but we find it's bad practice dealing or diffonding individual data on the open comment section so we do our best to avoid that. Private messaging is more adequate. :-)
      Thank you.

      We appreciate the supportive comment, it really pumps us up for the future :-D
      The bears are going to retail at 84,90€ for the pack and 34,90€ for the Chieftess. They should be made available as add-ons at 70USD and/or (TBD) included in Garrison or Campaign Armies. Take this with a pinch of salt since the inclusion of sci-fi has changed the inital layout I had been seeing and Angelos with his new advisor are the ones currently in charge of that so some things may have changed.

      @Shieldwolf
      I think @Balgin makes a compelling argument. Warmaidens, Wolf Wardens, Sisters is what is best for me. I have been looking forward to them for a long time. But as far as what is best for the kickstarter campaign, I think Wolf Wardens, Warmaidens, Sisters is the way to go. Get the runs on the board early so to speak.
      Also, you had better be bringing back those Arachnomaidens, I only just missed out on them last time, my heart couldn't take missing them again.

    17. Tom aka "Original Timmy"

      @Shieldwolf, Yeah i too would prefer if they wasnt a duel kit spread over 2 sprues as it limits the options available, 3 sprues would work better imo.

      But like you say if all goes well sci-fi will get completely separate kits and im guessing a lot of sci-fi fans will be holding of until that point as they dont want a lot of left over fantasy bits they cant use and at that point i think the KS could well blow up as no one is making plastic female sci-fi troops and we all know people are crying out for SOB proxies, personally i think the sci-fi sisters could stand up on their own on KS and do well.

      How come the Sisters have separate kits straight away were as the other 2 dont?

      One last thing please dont have separate fantasy and sci-fi SG's, thinking about that i have flashbacks of KS1 and the lost $11k admittedly there was 5 factions on offer.

    18. Adam Dodge on May 11

      Thanks SW. Personally I'm hoping for a good amount of funding then as I'd prefer them to be separate. Partly because then all the limited sprue space will just be for one genre, which means more variety of extras, and partly because (and I seem to be in a minority here) I'm only interested in the fantasy stuff. Nothing against your concepts, they look great, it's just that I rarely do sci-fi stuff these days.

      Although I think some sci-fi backers that aren't interested in fantasy also won't want fantasy stuff. But like you said, hopefully it'll fund well enough that they'll be separate kits anyway. And considering the positive opinions I've seen around the internet about your new sci-fi girls, I'm confident you'll get a positive response on kickstarter with them

    19. Shieldwolf Miniatures 4-time creator on May 11

      @Tom
      We think we have balanced everything nicely, you will see for yourselves. Infantry versions in plastic will go in twentys so same goes for the sci-fi crowd. Price might vary in retail due to us funding it and not the backers but that has not been decided yet. For the KS duration prices for either version are going to be the same. Same goes for the resin characters.

    20. Shieldwolf Miniatures 4-time creator on May 11

      @Adam
      We were wondering when someone would have asked something like that! :-D
      If we only barely fund the project and assuming we pitch with the Wolf Wardens, then the same plastic kit will have options to either assemble sci-fi or fantasy troops (different weaponry and back pieces). If we manage to unlock a lot of their additional options like we did on the Shieldmaidens project (i.e. command group, alternative weaponry, fluff stuff etc) we will be creating 2 different kits, one will be only fantasy and the other would be exclusively sci-fi.
      If we manage to unlock the Sisters for example, then it is definitely going to be different kits for each. I hope I made sense :-D

      "Perhaps we didn't make this clear on the update, allow me to clarify that when a fantasy kit funds then a sci-fi kit funds along with it (as we will be covering the costs for the additional sci-fi parts of the kit)."

      So are we talking a whole 20 "man" squad or sci-fi upgrade sprue, if a fantasy resin hero unlocks so does a sci-fi version and how will sci-fi mounts/vehicles work into the KS, the same as i previously listed?

    22. Adam Dodge on May 11

      Are the fantasy and sci-fi kits going to be completely separate from each other or duel kits?

    24. Shieldwolf Miniatures 4-time creator on May 11

      The Wolf Wardens are one of the 3 Dragonbreds, i.e. female mercenary factions. Unlike the other 2 factions (Sisters and *censored*) these reside in the North. More fluff/info on these in thc upcoming updates, like @tizzy asked we will be showing off renders/teasers as we get closer to the launch date.
      @Randy & Randy

      Wolf Wardens, Warmaidens then Sisters would be the preferable order to me. I mean I'd prefer it for the Warmaidens to go first really, not because I like them more but because they've got a sort of legacy place in the queue. That being said I believe the Wolf Wardens will get more money in quickly with the Warmaidens riding on their coat tails as it were.
