About this project
Imagine hiking through the beautiful Shenandoah and you wonder what variety of cherry blossom trees produces such vibrant blooms. Or you’re in your backyard garden and you really, really need to identify the specific species of aphids attacking your award-winning roses. Now you can, with BloomCatch.
What started off as a classroom experiment, we’ve built into a tangible concept. Coupling powerful technology with human expertise, BloomCatch will help you show off that green thumb.
We’re a local D.C. company working with the local community here from the grassroots to help us build an amazing app that all can enjoy. We’ve conducted many hours of research. Talked to a lot of plant experts. Read a lot of books and articles on plants and technology. Partnered with some amazing people to help us turn this idea into a startup.
BloomCatch was inspired by children's curiosity and a parent's desire to feed that curiosity. After researching a few other plant apps, BloomCatch was born to meet that need. The three co-founders took the original idea and played with it. A lot. To determine if a) it was actually doable and b) if anyone even cared if it was doable. We set out by talking to a ton of people. We worked mostly out of our public library, where we had access to meeting rooms, bulletin boards, and books about plants.
We took our earliest feedback and initial assumptions and we drew sketches. Then, we asked even more people, “Hey, what do you think?” They didn’t like it. So, we asked a few more questions. We talked to farmers, gardeners, landscapers, and pretty much anyone who would listen. We developed better sketches. We crafted diagrams. We mapped out an algorithm. We used software to better conceptualize the idea. Finally, we hired a developer to help turn all of our hard work into a concrete reality.
The prototype is based on a very simple and basic design. It’s intended to easily guide the user to discover their plant.
Simple, easy log-in process for all users
High-degree of accuracy when identifying plants
Connection to plant experts for all your planting needs
Provide useful care information for your plant
That’s it. We’ve left out any bells and whistles because we want the product to do these basic and simple tasks really, really well.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing crowdfunding platform. With your support we can reach our minimum goal of $5,000 to fund product development. If we don’t reach our minimum goal then we don’t collect anything.
We are three co-founders who care an awful lot about plants. We are very close to releasing this dream to the public and we need your help to get us there. Your support will directly fund product development. We will be able to connect the front end of the product to the complicated back end and bring BloomCatch to life.
At the heart of BloomCatch is our innovative approach to linking our next-level back end to our intuitive interface. This approach will ensure that BloomCatch consistently provides best-in-class accuracy and ease of use. Combining the latest image-recognition technology with some of the best local plant experts around, BloomCatch will be able to consistently deliver accurate results to users.
Initially BloomCatch will only be able to identify a few plants. We will be teaching it a lot to ensure a high degree of accuracy. But over time, BloomCatch will be able to expand its plant vocabulary as users upload images and give it feedback.
BloomCatch will connect the local plant community while helping people to rediscover nature.
Risks and challenges
Software development has its own unique challenges. Although ideally we are working towards a definitive timetable, complications may arise. The biggest challenge is the image recognition component. There are a number of things that need to work well in order to obtain accurate hits. Although we do anticipate BloomCatch will be able to deliver results with a high degree of accuracy, there is no guarantee the results will be 100% accurate. In fact, we will never guarantee that. We can only guarantee that BloomCatch will deliver the best results that it can come up with. And if it can’t, it will go find someone who can.
Besides the technology component, there’s the other component of ensuring someone is physically available to answer questions about plants. This requires coordination and resources expended to ensure users have a satisfying experience within the app itself. We’ve partnered with some great, smart people who really understand plants. However, coordinating these resources seamlessly for the end user is still presenting a challenge that we need to overcome.
We do not anticipate extended delays because we work very closely with our developer to ensure product development stays on a realistic timeline. However, if we encounter unforeseen challenges we will communicate to our backer community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
