Gameplay video is up!

Thanks to all for their patience.  We just added a 2 minute video that shows some of the battle gameplay, races, classes, and characters in Class of Heroes 2.  This is from the PS3 version, which has higher resolution than the PSP version, but the characters, monsters, locations, and gameplay shown are the same as the PSP.  We had to use the PS3 video capture to get this up as quickly as possible, but it will definitely give all of you a MUCH better idea of what this like.

Thanks to all of you for your support on this project, and please spread the word that the video is out!

I saw that you are going to release this for download this fall. That is good news. But I wonder about a physcial copy. Is that still in the works? Not sure if you can answer but will it play on the Vita?

    2. Silmina on April 20, 2012

Mercenair001: MP & GW are focused on the PSP because that's where all the "hidden gems" are these days; most of the nifty PS3 titles are getting NA releases. We're getting Ni no Kuni, and Tales of Xillia has been trademarked so it's most likely coming over. It's too early to say about Time and Eternity, but hopefully that makes it over too. *crosses fingers, reeeeeally wants it!*

TO MonkeyPaw/Gaijinworks : I really loved Working design, I really want you guys to succeed. The problem is you made some choice that made your success difficult. 1) You should have offer a pledge for the downloadable game only without special packaging (maybe at 25-35$). I have a vita and I would bought that pakage. Having to pay 100$ is a lot to ask and I'm not ready to pay that for a psp game. 2) You should have had a pakage for the game only (arond 35-40$). Great localisation is more important than a great package. Some people can't afford the extra 20$ or just does't want to. 3) There is a lot of JRPG on PSP but not a lot or JRPG on PS3, When I have to choose between playing to a PS3 or a handheld game, I prefere the console game on the big screen. All of my friends bought PS3 thinking they'll have a lot of JRPG like the PS2 era a few years ago. Everyone is still waiting for that. I'm sure there must be some gem hidden there. I'm sorry that what you offert here doesn't represent what I'm looking for. I hope, in the event that this KS doesn't work, that you will not stop trying and maybe see how you could do make things differently the next time. Event if it's a PSP game (CoH 3?), I will supporte you if one of the pledge give me acess the game without making my bank account bleeding. Keep up the good work and please don't give up. We need you guys. Thanks for reading me

@RayLeeMental Right. If we don't fund, there's no budget for voice, nor getting a license for Japanese voices. Not the best scenario.

@MP/GJ when you say that it would "be a basic digital-only localization with no voice, etc." would this release have no voice at all? Or come with the Japanese voice acting? Because "[c]lear license to retain Japanese audio option" seems to be mentioned as a possiblity only if "the funding limit [is exceeded] by 15%"

Another option is sending it as a "gift" which can make it untaxable, but that will depend of how customs treats it. I've done it before when shipping to Europe from the US (or when having items shipped to me from Europe), and it's a bit hit or miss depending on the guy at customs. If it's a small package, it will usually pass.

    7. Aletheides on April 14, 2012

@MonkeyPaw/Gaijinworks: VAT taxes for the EU area depends on the value of the goods. Heres a statement InExile put on their FAQ for the wasteland 2 kickstarter. If you do this for overseas customers it will help keep eventual VAT taxes low. There will still be the risk of VAT but not the absurd amounts that people fear.

"What about VAT and Customs Fees for international bakcers?
We'll value the package we send to you at the cost of the items in the box, not how much money you donated to the Kickstarter campaign. This should help keep customs fees low for our non-US backers.

@Brash: If the project fails, it really wouldn't be fair to assume that means a lack of interest in JRPGs in general. There just isn't. The real reasons why it might not fund are lack of interest in this title specifically, the fact that PSP Go and Vita are digital only, and missteps with the Kickstarter itself (no gameplay footage at first, etc.) Even if worst comes to worst and this doesn't fund, I think it would be worth it to take lessons learned here and try again with a future CoH title. After CoH 2 comes out, people will have a clearer idea what to expect from the series and from GW, and hopefully financial situations will have improved for those of us who would give more but just can't do it right now.

    9. Brash Smith on April 14, 2012

Yes that can happen. But to say this will gauge the future of if Japanese RPGs can be profitable to bring over by having a campaign to admittedly not a JRPG. (Dungeon crawler/roguelikeish) for a format that is no longer the norm for the people who own the system while telling Vita and Go owners to either pay 100$ for the game or give 20$ for the soundtrack download and pay Sony directly the rest on PSN just seems well, Upsetting to say that's going to be the test.

I pledged 100 plus Canadian shipping just because I'd prefer to have the download copy if I ever choose to upgrade to a go but I am one of those people who love how you guys do translations and the effort you put into your amazing special editions.

And it kills me because even as a adult now I'd love to see the working designs quality special editions still thrive and exist so I hope if this one isn't successful maybe you would think it was the game/system and not JRPGs in general.

Also Kudos to the 10k pledger you are a hero among heroes. I am rooting for this to be funded as much as everyone else here. I hate to seem if I am being negative. Just trying to help.

    10. MonkeyPaw / Gaijinworks Creator on April 13, 2012

@BrashSmith Actually, Vita owners are fine if they get the $100 level pledge because they get the UMD AND a download code to play on their PSP or Vita. A number have written us to say they will get this level and sell the UMD, perhaps coming out ahead of even the $59 pledges considering how rare this release will be if this funds.

    11. Antonio Garcia
      on April 13, 2012

@Brash Smith: Well, considering how poorly the Vita has been selling, and the fact that it's not BC with UMD discs, a UMD release is still viable. I'm not getting a Vita until 2014 since I've got to complete my UMD backlog. Had it been compatible, I might have bought one this holiday.

@MonkeyPaw/Gaijinworks: Who knows? This might eventually get funded, but I'll definitely be sad if because of a failed KS we never get a CE release as awesome as those from Working Designs...

    12. Brash Smith on April 13, 2012

I really think a Current systems out there project would've been a better gauge than a PSP game where you're asking for people to pledge for a disc version while if they upgraded to a vita they have no way to play anymore.

    13. Kimiko Koopman on April 13, 2012

Oh, so the rest of the Class Of Heroes series will be translated? That's great news. Even if they will be digital-only, that's still infinitely better than nothing.

I don't know the rates for other European countries, but here in the Netherlands, games are taxed at the standard high tariff of 19%. Be aware though that both (privatized national postal service) and FedEx add a fixed price for customs declaration as well (this should be part of the shipping cost of course, but you can't complain very well if they're holding your package hostage). For small packages (like one DVD or game), the tax+declaration can be almost as much as the item is worth.

A suggestion for further KickStarting: separate collector's editions from support for game translations. With this KS, it isn't clear what people are pledging for. The KS rewards say we pledge for CEs, but you're also asking us to pledge because it will help the cause of delocalizing Japanese RPGs.

    14. MonkeyPaw / Gaijinworks Creator on April 12, 2012

If this does fund, we'll probably do a Physical Deluxe pack + extra localization KS for all of them. If it doesn't fund? We'll have to see, but in that case it probably would be better to just go digital only with successive releases. If less than 7000 fans can't be found to pledge for a Physical Deluxe pack on this project, the support probably isn't there for future ones. We're still working hard to raise awareness and incorporate fan suggestions and we won't give up on helping this Fund until the KS is over.

    15. MonkeyPaw / Gaijinworks Creator on April 12, 2012

How much is VAT in Europe? Is it taxed at different rates for video games?

    16. Aletheides on April 12, 2012

Excellent video :) Im also at my limit atm with the 115$ i pledged. But im doing my best to spread the word. Theres a lot of fear of VAT taxes though so while there is people overseas who would like to pledge they hesitate as theres no international friendly digital only alternative.

    17. Silmina on April 12, 2012

@Jonathan Cook: So you're just another hater, huh? :/ I feel bad for you that apparently you have nothing else better to do with your time.
@MP/GW: Do you have any plans to do Kickstarters for other Class of Heroes games, assuming all goes well with localizing them?

    18. MonkeyPaw / Gaijinworks Creator on April 12, 2012

We're still pushing to fund this. If it doesn't, it will just be a basic digital-only localization with no voice, etc. The fanbase will have spoken and we'll just give them the digital realease and move on. Pushing a Kickstarter again that failed is not a good use of time.

@MP/GW This makes me want to increase my pledge, sadly I don't have the funds too :(
But I do want to encourage you to, if you don't hit your goal this time, retry and put it up again. I know I'd come and repledge!

    20. MonkeyPaw / Gaijinworks Creator on April 12, 2012

Since you decided to post this here after emailing us as well, here's the response we gave you in email here, too:

He's not gay, he's a cross dresser who feels quite left out by the LGBT label that has no inital for him. So he's crusading for a LGBTC acronym. He's actually one of the better characters in the game as the Alchemy Professor.

But you're entitled to support what you want, and we wish you well! (Note that as of now, we still have your $1.23 pledge showing active)

    21. Silmina on April 12, 2012

@MP/GW: I see, thanks for taking the time to answer! ^_^
@Jonathan Cook: As gently as I can possibly say this, are you sure you aren't overreacting? Who's the one trading in stereotypes here: you who decided the man must be gay based on his appearance, or the person who created a muscular cross-dressing man for unknown reasons? Not to put words in anyone's mouth, but I'm pretty sure I can safely say that no one at Acquire, Monkey Paw, or Gaijinworks intended to make fun of you personally, or insult the whole of the LGBT community. Isn't a bit of a waste to get worked up over something when no offense was intended, when there's plenty of real malice out there to be enraged about? As a southern Christian female, there are a LOT of things in Japanese games I could get upset about: the Kansai hick stereotype, the objectification of women, the portrayal of religion and Christianity in general. But instead of looking to them for serious social commentary, I'd rather enjoy them for what they are: games that are not necessarily aimed at me, but are still a great deal of fun to play.

    22. Jonathan Cook on April 12, 2012

I'm withdrawing my pledge. I watched the new gameplay video, but right at the very end, that typical Japanese caricature of gay men? The unfounded stereotype we suffer from a severe case of dichotomy in our gender identity? Nuh-uh. I'm not giving my money to this. I'm used to the fact that my demographic is almost never represented in most games, and shoehorning in gay characters wouldn't gel with every type of game, Tetris being an example. However when LGBT -do- finally crop up and are as offensively depicted as I have seen in Class of Heroes 2 (what's further troubling is the fact that you deemed appropriate the disgusting caricature as an acceptable means to garner more financial support), I make sure that that game is never getting my money. Period.

    23. MonkeyPaw / Gaijinworks Creator on April 12, 2012

The Class of Heroes 2 English race translations are much closer to the Japanese version than Class of Heroes 1 English. We lost an "r" on "Felpurr" toward the more traditional spelling and fixed romanization errors on Diablos and Bahamun (vs Bahamoon). It can always change, but these are probably pretty close to what it will ship with.

    24. Steve Knight on April 12, 2012

Great video. Any chance of doing Arc the Lad?

    25. Silmina on April 12, 2012

Very nice! ^-^ I'm looking forward to the outdoor environments and other improvements. But uh...dare I ask who that is at 2:04? XD Oh, and are the renderings used in the video final? Or are you considering using the same ones from CoH (Felpier, Erdgeist, etc.)?
