Kris & Krampus Kringle
Who am I?
Hello, my name is Bailey Quillin Cooper. I am an independent author and illustrator in Portland, Oregon, and this is my very first children's book!
From the back cover:
Kris just wanted a normal little brother. Instead he ended up with the hairiest, smelliest, messiest, clumsiest, weirdest, rudest, and worst little brother in the whole wide world!
If all of those things weren't bad enough, Kris's brother doesn't even understand the most wonderful time of the year!
Will Kris be able to stop him from ruining Christmas? Or will his favorite holiday be wrecked forever? Find out in this one of a kind winter tale for all ages...you've never seen anything quite like it!
I came up with the idea for "Kris & Krampus Kringle" about three years ago, but it wasn't until Christmastime of 2014 that I finally decided to put the pencil to the paper and start sketching out the snowy world that I saw so clearly in my head. I knew that I wanted to write a children's story about Krampus...but not just any Krampus story.
Who is Krampus?
Krampus is a character from Alpine Christmas folklore. Usually he's depicted as some kind of hairy half-goat, half-man monster with an extra long tongue who serves as the "bad cop" counterpart to jolly old St. Nick. Instead of getting coal for Christmas as a punishment for being on the naughty list, in other parts of the world you might just get a visit from Krampus.
I've always thought that Krampus was such a cool character, but I've also always kind of wondered what his deal was. Where did he come from? Why does he always ride into town with Saint Nicholaus? And most perplexingly of all, why on Earth are these two friends?
It was that very postcard, in fact, that first put it into my head that there must be more to the story. They don't appear to share many common interests, so they must be somehow related. They must go way, way back. They must be brothers!
What kind of story is this?
Kris & Krampus Kringle is my own original take on the Krampus mythology. It's a complete retelling of the old stories, and the only story about Kris Kringle and Krampus Kringle growing up together as brothers.
Why make a Krampus book for kids?
Krampus has been recently gaining popularity here in the United States. Yep, kids these days really do love Krampus! Unfortunately, there's very little in the realm of Krampus media that is accessible to children. I wanted to make a Krampus book that is just for them. I wanted to make a book about Krampus when he was a kid!
What else is this book about?
It's about discovering that the winter season isn't really about decorations and presents; it's about understanding, and family. Kris & Krampus Kringle is a story about tolerance, sibling relationships, and most of all, love. It's a Christmas tale for every household, regardless of their religion and even (or perhaps especially if) they are hairy, smelly, messy, clumsy, or just a little bit weird.
It is also the result of nearly a year and a half of hard work and perseverance. Through many sleepless nights, I have brought the story from just an idea to a completed, fully illustrated, ready-to-publish, 32-page children's book...and now I need your help!
My goal is to raise enough money to fund the publishing, first print run, and online distribution of Kris & Krampus Kringle through an Oregon-based print-on-demand self-publishing company.
I have chosen to go down the self-publishing route because it allows me complete artistic freedom to create my first book exactly the way that it was intended. This book my debut project; I want it to be a reflection of who I am as an author/illustrator, and as an artist in general. It is very difficult to find a traditional mainstream publisher that is willing to take a chance on a completely unique and oddball idea, especially within such an established commercial market as the holiday season. By publishing the book myself, I won't have to change my vision to fit anyone else's personal agenda.
Another reason is time. By self-publishing, I am in control over when my book will be available. After all this hard work, I would really like for my book to be ready for Christmas this year! I'm not always the most patient person, as you may have guessed.
And lastly, by self-publishing with a company that offers a print-on-demand service and a massive online distribution, my book will be available to order through many of the big-box booksellers' websites. With more venues to sell my book, more families will be able to add my story to their list of Christmas traditions...starting with this year.
If you can help me raise enough money to fund this goal, then my book will be available to order online in November 2016...just in time for Christmas!
Thank you for your support!
Thank you all for taking the time to read this. Please help me realize my goal by checking out all the available options for contribution (and all the cool limited time rewards that go with them!) Your support is invaluable and I really can't do this thing without you!
Risks and challenges
I will start out by saying that the biggest challenge that we could possibly face is the lack of funding to see this project through. In order for Kris & Krampus Kringle to go through the process of self-publishing and be ready for online distribution in time for Christmas of 2016, I will have to raise the full amount of my goal with this campaign! This book will not be available in any other media besides the traditional hardcover format (I'm old-school like that.) This means that the only way to guarantee a special signed first edition copy of the book is to contribute $50 or more towards the campaign to ensure that we reach our goal and the book get published in the first place!
Once the project has been funded and the book has been submitted for publishing, there will be a about four week long pre-sale period to raise awareness of the book and bolster sales one the online bookseller websites. People who were not able to get a first-edition book by participating in the Kickstarter campaign will then be able to preorder a regular copy online at retail price (estimated $25 USD.) Because we are working with a print-on-demand system, the actual book release date and the availability of the book to ship largely depends on the amount of pre-sales. I am shooting for a release sometime in November of 2016, but if factors out of my control delay the printing of the book I will be sure to keep all of you posted with updates along the way!
In addition to all of this, my husband are planning to purchase our very first house in mid-October...which will potentially put our move right before (or even during) the book release date! The timing is a little unfortunate and although I realize that this may complicate things a little, we're still confident that we will be able to get all of the rewards shipped out in November for a late November/early December arrival. This is my very first time self-publishing a book, so I expect to check in with you guys often while I learn even more about the process as the project goes on.
