It All Began With A Hero:
This entire project began as a simple assignment in a graphic design class. The assignment was to create a toy and it's respective packaging. Having had several years of computer modeling training, I took it upon myself to create a completely customized action figure in the resemblance of my graphic design instructor. Named Captain Abs, the project led me to an idea of spreading a new kind of personalized manufacture.
Hundreds of years ago, worldwide manufacture focused around incredibly skilled artists and craftsmen to create the world's wonders. With the onset of mass production, a single creation could be manufactured millions of times cheaply and effectively, however this method of manufacture made the traditional method obsolete, a method that emphasized personalization.
The onset of 3D printers however have made it affordable to manufacture incredibly personalized objects with modern materials while being cost effective by eliminitating the need for plastic injection molds. Single items can be printed for the same cost of printing hundreds of identical models. This allows for a very customized experience between the artist and client that has seldom existed since before mass manufacture.
By backing this project, you are showing that 3D printers can bring back these artisans and craftsmen and their highly customizable services for those they produce works for. This technology is incredibly new and I am working to lead the way in this next generation of production.
Recently, in order to manufacture a custom product from modern materials, one had to have enourmous resources at their disposal. The supply chain had to be set up and a product would have to go through full scale mass production to be profitable. The work lied in the design of a single product and its mass manufacture. This is where 3D printing comes in. I desire to give people enormous creative input into their product's creation and to give them a personal experience only available when working one on one with your own personal artist.
The Goal Of This Project:
This project has been created with a particular finite goal in mind. My goal is to create for several of you backers, completely custom action figures, hand made from scratch just for you, mint in package. Minimum funding for this project includes all necessary upstart costs. You will receive a pamphlet that you will fill with information so that the artist can create your custom character.
The flagship in personal creation. JB Figures are an incredibly personalized line of action figures, tailored just for you. By backing this level you get to create your own hero or villain.
An artist will take the material provided by you in your booklet, sketch the character, and hand model your character with computer modeling software. Once modeled, the artist will then send your figure to a Fused Deposition Modeler (3D Printer) where your figure will be printed out of durable ASB plastics. After printing, your figure will be hand sanded for a smooth finish and painted for costume.
With the completed figure, the artist will then design the packaging for your figure, taking into consideration many factors of your hero/villain's identity. Once completely designed, your figure will be packaged mint in box, and shipped to you.
The more information you provide, the closer your figure will resemble what you may have in mind. Drawings can be particularly helpful if you have a particular look in mind for your hero/villain.
There is a great deal of possibilities that are unlocked by 3D printing. I'd also like to broaden the possibilities by opening up additional custom creations for backers on Kickstarter. Similar to the action figures, backers of these creations will have the opportunity for supplemental input in a complimentary booklet. The following rewards offer completely custom products at a lower entry price than JB Figures. While the photos represented are CAD Previews, if these models were to be sent to a 3D printer, they would be essentially identical in every way.
JB Keychains are completely customized keychains and can include any pattern, style, name, or any combination.
The basic keychain is exclusively a simple rectangular keychain with either a custom phrase, word, or a name, in the font of your choice.
The advanced keychain is a much more complex personal creation allowing for elements of type, pattern, and design.
The majority of iPhone 4/4S/5 cases are very similar, each case being composed of a plastic body with some kind of design or logo printed in ink on the back.
These cases go a step further and instead blaze the back of your iPhone with a beautiful, completely tactile pattern or design. You have complete choice of the pattern. You may choose to simply describe the pattern or even draw it yourself. Use lines, shapes or even letters and words to achieve the design you desire. The sky is the limit.
Apple has just released their iPhone 5. If you back and are planning to upgrade to an iPhone 5, I will have an iPhone 5 case design coming shortly that can be customized.

Thank you for your support. You will receive one 18' x24' promotional picture as pictured above.
Where Does All This Money Go?
Hardware and supplies. A 3D printer will need to be purchased in order to print the created products. A new 2D printer for packaging and hand paint supplies are also in the budget. Remaining funds are put in place in order to purchase the large supplies of plastics as well as the overhead for payments and shipping.
How long will it take?
Because of the custom nature of these rewards, each creation takes time. A single reward is not created once and mass distributed to everyone but instead to only one of you. Therefore, your patience would be greatly appreciated through this process. Once funded, the 3D printer itself will take roughly 10 weeks to be shipped. During these ten weeks, backer's creations will immediately begin production in the computer and be created on a first come first serve basis (with the exception of priority status backers who will be added to a special "priority queue".) Once the printer arrives, backer's creations will be printed in the same queue order, boxed, and shipped.
After the close of the project, you will receive your queue number with estimated time for creation. It's expected that at the onset estimated dates will be rough and inaccurate and continuously increase in accuracy as the process goes on. While all personal creations are listed with a date to be delivered as January 2013, this date will be largely incorrect as some will receive their creation long before that date. I understand your desire for a solid timeline however and once backed, I will begin to work on a more realistic timeline for the number of backers.
My name is Jonathan Bowen. I am a professional graphic designer, photographer, and CAD artist that enjoys pushing the boundaries of new technology. I have nearly four years of computer modeling experience under my belt. Additionally, I have educated a class for an entire semester on the subject of computer modeling and animation using the fantastic open source application, Blender. I am hard working, dedicated, and committed. I am very excited to be working with you backers to create for each of you your own personal creation.
Have any additional ideas?
Have any ideas for personal creations you think would make a great JB Print? Please, email me or comment with them, I'd love to hear some of your ideas. This is an exciting and revolutionary technology and I've only been able to scrape the surface of possibilities. I'd like to now open up the possibilities up to you.
Thank you for your support:
I would like to thank all of you backers for taking a look at my project and for your support. I'm looking forward to working with a lot of you in the coming months.
Risks and challenges
A potential challenge includes ensuring that models are best designed for the printers capabilities, though, this is only a mild setback at most. An additional challenge involves ensuring consistent aspects of each creation with this new 3D printing technology. I have nearly four years of experience with computer based modeling design. My large experience with graphic design and CAD applications gives me a large pool of knowledge from which to draw from to solve these and future challenges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
