About this project
For the first time in our 27 years as a Company, Doug Varone and Dancers has been invited to Hungary to partake in the renowned Budapest Dance Festival. We've been planning an immersive program featuring 2 evenings of performance and extensive community outreach and workshops.
During our 2013 South American tour, we were called upon to act as Ambassadors of American dance, an experience that was transformative for the entire company. The connections we were able to make through the language of dance were deeper than we could have imagined.
We are thrilled at this opportunity to revive our roles as Ambassadors and connect with the artists of Eastern Europe in a reciprocal environment where we will share our ideas and to learn from our peers.
Throughout our planning process, we have engaged in a fruitful partnership with American Dance Abroad, which is helping to facilitate visibility for the Company in Budapest with an advance trip for Doug in March. His visit will set the stage for the dynamic outreach and engagement that is such an integral part of our work.
Why do we need your help?
Funding the arts is a great challenge, one that many of you are familiar with, but this project has been met with enthusiasm.
• The Festival is providing a fee of $15,000
• We have Foundation support in the amount of $17,730 from such institutions as:
o Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation’s US Artists International program
o Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant
o American Dance Abroad
• We are left now with a small gap of $5,500, which will cover airfare.
Our contracts are signed, our repertory is set, and our hearts are already deeply integrated into the project. We are 100% focused on getting ourselves to Budapest. All we need is help with international travel.
This is where you come in.
We are asking for donations of any amount ($25, $50, $100, $250 and so on) to help us fund the Company's round-trip travel to Budapest. Each gift will inch us closer to obtaining 10 tickets for what promises to be a ground-breaking trip - for the festival, the Company and all participants. For your contribution, you will receive some small gifts from us to keep you informed of our process, and enfold you in our family of donors and fans. All contributors will be receiving thanks on our website and Facebook page. $250 contributors will be invited to a Google hangout with Doug & the Company during the tour, and $500 donors will be invited to attend a rehearsal for Budapest activities before they depart. All of you will continue to receive updates of our fundraising and artistic progress as we work toward our goal. We look forward to working with you to make our tour a reality. Budapest or bust!
Risks and challenges
Luckily enough, the planning for this tour is already done. We have a full roster of classes scheduled, have picked our repertory for the shows, and are rehearsing now.
Our biggest risk is that we have not yet purchased our airline tickets, and the closer we get to the tour, the more expensive they will be. At this stage, we are hoping to secure our tickets the moment this campaign is funded—if the prices are higher than we’d hoped, we’ll need to draw funds from one of our general operating grants, which support our every day operations and the rest of the work the company does throughout the year.
