About this project
The Inner Beauty Project, in its truest form, is a series of face-to-face encounters between people mirroring one another's incredible beauty & vulnerability. So this campaign is about the possibility of spending some sustained, supported time on the road facilitating Inner Beauty encounters, with the help of the products and treatments I have developed with my collaborator, Elana Langer. I want to travel to your school, church, temple, hospital, office, scout troop, yoga studio, spa, recovery group, or home, and work with your community to reflect on what makes us truly beautiful.
If you're a make-up fanatic, great! If you never wear make-up, great! Whoever you are, your birthright as a human being is well-being, ease, wisdom, and compassion. The Inner Beauty Project seeks to offer playful, non-dogmatic reminders of those truths, using the frameworks of beauty and devotion.
The Inner Beauty Compact is part shrine, part book, and part meditation object. It's intended as a portable sacred space where you can see yourself in a compassionate light. It's also a way to carry around meditation instructions to remind you of the possibility of freedom, in the midst of all the situations you encounter in life.
The Inner Beauty Lipstick is a reminder that our mouths are important to how we connect with the world, with our truths, and with our ability to bear witness. Inside is a prayer scroll:
As an artist and a meditation teacher, I have created a series of Inner Beauty Treatments designed to act as catalysts for experiencing your own authenticity & beauty, in the company of others, in open-ended, co-creative space. These shared experiences are the true power of the Inner Beauty Project - the driving motivation for me to go on pilgrimage with this project.
Here are a couple of examples:
Ask a partner, "what makes you free?"
Ask about 4 times, with a little space in between. whatever answers come up are the right answers, without too much thinking or self-editing. try not to respond or react in any outward way. just give your partner a space of deep listening.
Then, ask your partner, "what makes you not-free?" ask about 4 times. whatever answers come up are the right answers.
Now switch roles - you're answering, and your partner is asking. your partner asks, “what makes you free?” your partner asks, “what makes you not-free?” be received by your partner’s deep listening.
Try this while looking directly at your partner, while looking into a mirror your partner holds for you, or while looking in a mirror at the sky (like the beautiful ladies above).
Based on what you've heard, imagine and bestow a blessing for your partner. likewise, your partner imagines and bestows a blessing for you. If you like, tie strings or ribbons around one another's wrists, as reminders of your blessings. you are always free to choose towards freedom, or away from it, for your own good, and for the good of others.
Find a nook, alcove, empty closet, window seat, or under-table space, and put a curtain or blanket over it. put a chair or cushion inside the little space, and some kind of light, if you’d like.
For Safety Closet wear, we recommend either pajamas, or a magic victory cape made of the regal scraps of your life (like the beautiful lady above).
Go inside. Sit on the chair or cushion, and breathe. You’re going to be just fine. There is a place for you in the world. You are welcome here, and in turn, you can welcome others & the world.
How Does the Funding Work?
There are at least a couple of different approaches to funding this project:
- You just like the idea of this thing going on the road. It's like a circus-revival-spa-for-the-soul, and you're just glad to give it a little push to get going wherever it is going to go. Rest assured! I will keep a blog on my travels, so you can find out all about it. Your contributions will help immensely!
- You really want the Inner Beauty Project to come to your town/school/yoga studio/church/college/home/empty shopfront. In that case - be creative! Approach friends, families, co-workers, fellow students, or fellow-parents similar organizations, and encourage them to contribute to this campaign. Let me know where you'd like me to come, and when. Earmark your contributions for a particular destination, and we will work together to make it happen.

Inner Beauty Visit (remote) for you & the community of your choice, including Inner Beauty Treatments, and an overview of the project. Virtual Pilgrimage! Very cutting-edge.
$400 or more
Inner Beauty Visit (live) - I will come visit your school, yoga studio, church, home, spa, hospital, office, meditation group, shop, or gallery, and stage an Inner Beauty event for your community. Note: I live in NH. If you are hoping to bring me & the Inner Beauty Project someplace far away, it helps a lot to combine efforts with other groups in your area! There is no additional funding for this project, so we will need to work together to raise funds for my travel & other expenses.
Risks and challenges
Fundamentally: a lot of the groundwork for this project is already done, stable, and ready-to-go. The Inner Beauty Products have been manufactured, sewn, cut, engraved, cast, fired, and printed. Hoorah! The Inner Beauty Treatments are constantly evolving out of conversations with new participants. Hooree! And now the key is to bring these beautiful things & ideas to people who will enjoy & be nurtured by them.
Pilgrimage - devotional travel - is something I've done a lot of in this life, starting when I was 19 & took off on the Camino de Santiago in Spain with some friends. Then came the Shikoku pilgrimage in Japan a few years later, and the Silk Road after that. I'm familiar with the various hardships & uncertainties of the road. I'm also familiar with the pleasure of following a path established by others, as a conduit for compassion. That's what I'm hoping for here: that you will be moved enough by the idea of the Inner Beauty Bar to set up a network of invitations for me to follow in the months to come.
I am far from knowing the details of exactly how this is going to work out, but I also trust completely that it will come together in its own true form. High tolerance for creative chaos is a personal super-power. With your participation, I can't wait to find out what happens!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
