About this project
Camden is one of the poorest and most blighted cities in the United States. It has one of the highest homicide rates combined with extensive poverty. Gangs and drugs are prevalent. Since I took these photographs, crime rates have only increased. Due to budgetary constraints, the police department has been decreased to 200 officers for a city of 77,000. On average someone is shot every 33 hours plus there were 67 homicides last year. People are afraid to leave their homes. Children cannot go out to play or ride a bike due to fear of violence. Although there has been significant media coverage of Camden, these pictures will speak for themselves.
I hope to publish a soft cover book with approximately 35 black and white and color images of Camden, New Jersey. All the images for the book are shown in the video. Some are also displayed on this web page. The books will be distributed to politicians, government and charitable organizations, and schools in order to increase awareness. Since I have all the images ready for publication, the book can be assembled quickly. My book will provide a realistic and powerful insight to a city that should not be overlooked or forgotten.
HOW YOUR FUNDING WILL BE USED
- Publish 50 books at about $35.00 apiece
- Photographic paper and supplies to make exhibition quality prints for publicity and distribution
- Additional time in Camden photographing
- Kickstarter/Amazon fees
- Postage and Handling
Risks and challenges
I do not anticipate any major risks as I have all the images needed to make the books and prints. Older negatives are more challenging to scan and print but good results can be obtained with time and patients.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
