Hi, thanks for stopping by. I'm really excited about this CD that I'm working on, Across The Years. As a songwriter, my dream has been to have my songs played really well by great musicians, and to be able to share them. That's what this project is about.
Across The Years
I actually started working on this CD project over 15 years ago, and finished a demo in 1999. I researched the cost of studio time and found someone who would produce it for me - hiring the musicians, arranging, etc. But the cost was way out of the ballpark, considering I wasn't expecting to make any money off of it.
Then in 2010, two things happened. First, I was inspired by a girl who lives on our street and plays the cello. I've always wanted to hear one of my songs with a real cello, so I wrote an arrangement for the two of us to play at a neighborhood house concert. What a thrill! I decided to bring her into a recording studio and do a simple recording of that one song. With a little research, I found the perfect small project studio for the job.
The second bit of serendipity was winning the services of the great blues/rock guitarist James Howard in a benefit auction. He was expecting to give a performance at a party or wedding, but instead I asked him to record one of my songs in the studio. We ended up tracking Morning Aire at that same recording studio. That experience made me realize that I could eventually arrange and produce the album myself, one song at a time, paying for studio time and musicians as I go.
Luckily my wife Cindy has been very supportive of the project, despite it being an expensive hobby. She likes that I'm pursuing my dream. The Songs
I've chosen a collection of songs for the piano that speak to the mind and the heart. My intention is for every song to be absolutely beautiful. Some are uplifting, some a bit melancholy, but all of them should touch you in some way.
If you make a pledge in any amount, I'll be sending links to samples of the recordings in the project's updates.
Why I Need Your Help
After a year and half of work on this new version of the album, I've already got seven out of nine tracks recorded. I've put a huge amount of love, care, attention to detail, trial-and-error, and money into this project, and I hope that shows. But I'm coming up to the crest of the roller coaster, and I need a little push to get me over the top. Each of the last two songs needs 4 players besides myself, which takes money. The whole album has to be mastered, a crucial but expensive process. Then there's manufacturing and printing the CDs. If I stick to my pay-as-I-go strategy, it might take another whole year to finish.
If you've never used this Kickstarter platform before, it's quite brilliant. You make a pledge between now and the project deadline. If we reach the goal by the deadline, your credit card will be charged (through Amazon.com) for the amount you pledged. If this project doesn't meet it's goal by the deadline, you aren't charged a dime.
I've set the goal modestly because I'm determined to reach it. I'd be delighted if we exceed the goal; it would give me a few more options with recording the final tracks, I can get better-quality mastering, photography, a nicer physical album, and more copies of the CD.
So please look over the rewards that I'm offering at various price levels and see if there's one that works for you.
Thanks so much for your support! Every bit helps.
