The goal of this documentary is to create a film about unconditional love, the power of love to heal, and the power of love to effect change in our world. The film will also celebrate the incredible strength and vulnerability it took for Maggie to share her story with the world, all in hopes of helping others in the process. - Jeremy Power Regimbal (Filmmaker)

Maggie's Story

Maggie Doyne is the founder of the Kopila Valley Children’s Home and School in Nepal. At age 19, on a gap year, she witnessed firsthand the situation with the children of war-torn Nepal and decided to use her savings of babysitting money to build a home for orphaned and at-risk children in Nepal. She moved to Nepal and took on the role of full-time mother to the rapidly growing Kopila Family. In 2010, she opened her first school for 350 of the remote region’s most impoverished children. Now, at age 30, Maggie is the mother to 49 Nepali children and her team's inspiring message of grassroots change has begun to spread around the world.

Maggie's work has been championed by Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Nicholas Kristof as a cover story for The NYT Magazine, and has also been featured in the Guardian, Huffington Post, TIME, VH1, CNN, and DoSomething.org. She’s been named as Glamour Magazine's Woman of the Year, honored by the Dalai Lama as an Unsung Hero of Compassion, used as an example for her groundbreaking work at the Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy and was also named one of the 30 most influential people under 30.

In 2014 Maggie was faced with her biggest challenge yet: a two month old baby boy (named Ravi) who was brought to her home with severe malnutrition and no mother to care for him. Yet over the next year and a half Maggie would miraculously nurse him back to health and he would become "the love of her life."

A year later in 2015, as Maggie began preparations to send her oldest kids off to college, she won the honor of being named CNN’s Hero of the Year. Maggie’s heart was fuller than it ever had been, seeing the effects of her work not only in the children but in the inspiration that was spreading around the world, igniting others to take action and make change. It was in the peak of this high that her world came crashing down when on Dec 30th, 2015, a tragic accident claimed Ravi’s life.

"I wanted to die, I went black out... Love was the scariest thing in the entire world... I didn't want to love another human being..." - Maggie Doyne

All that Maggie had accomplished, was ripped away by the grief of losing her son. She traveled back to New Jersey where she stayed alone in fetal position for 2 months. Yet somehow, in this dark place where she didn't know light still existed, another miracle occurred. She met Jeremy. Immediately a bond was formed when they discovered they shared the point of view that “focusing on raising the children of the world is how we can change our future.”  They've been inseparable ever since. Through his love she was able to remember her own and after four months away from her children, she and Jeremy made their way back. Our film will revolve heavily around the power of this love and the strength it took for Maggie to return to her children and continue her work.

The Film

Inspired by Maggie’s strength and compassion in all that she had gone through, filmmaker Jeremy Power Regimbal began to film her journey as life marched on.  Surrounded by her kids and her projects, she began to rise from the darkness of her grief and step into a newly found “savor every moment” perspective on life.

Though the film will describe Maggie’s incredible 10 year journey of creating BlinkNow, the main focus will be the time immediately following the tragedy and the momentous years ahead. The film will follow Maggie as she wades through a sea of grief, now armed with love, to complete her dream project, one of the greenest campuses on earth.  She'll also be watching the children she has raised for the past ten years leave their sheltered world in Nepal for the first time to continue their education in places like Amsterdam, Italy, and New York City.

Through Jeremy’s lens we’re granted an intimate look into Maggie’s journey of grief, loss and the power of love to bring her back. It is a touching portrait of a woman who has accomplished so much in her young life, with an incredible outlook and amount of compassion, even in the darkest of times as she rises back to her feet with the help of love. And, more specifically, his love. This film will be a celebration and deeply personal look at their journey together.

Message from Maggie

This has been the most difficult year of my life. At the beginning of last year I was sure I couldn't live another day.  The fact that I am still standing is at times inconceivable to me.  I live with sadness and grief that I could have never imagined for myself or wish on anyone. This past year made me realize just how quickly life can change, how you can lose the most important thing in your life in a heartbeat. I'm still in the midst of it and am not sure what to make of it. What I do know more than ever is that I'm going to love more, share more and give everything I have.  This is me giving a piece of myself and a piece of our family.  Of letting everyone in.  Of sharing the message that love heals.  Of me finding my way to hope. It's also the story of me coming to Nepal and about my love for my children, my journey through grief and unfathomable loss, finding love and joy and the strength to mother again.  It's about capturing this moment in time for me and my children. I was waiting for the right moment and the right person to let into our life here and I found that in Jeremy. It was amazing how completely organically it has all unfolded, almost like this was somehow meant to be.   - Maggie Doyne

What is BlinkNow?

The BlinkNow Foundation provides an education and a loving, caring home for children in Nepal.  The foundation also provides community outreach to reduce poverty, empower women, improve health, and encourage sustainability and social justice - it fulfills its mission by providing financial support and management oversight to the Kopila Valley Children's Home and Kopila Valley School in Surkhet, Nepal. In addition to the home and school, Kopila Valley runs a Health Clinic and a Women's Center for the local community.

If you want more information on BlinkNow check out their story.

Meet the Kopila Kids! (Maggie's 30th Bday)

A film Jeremy made with all the kids to surprise Maggie for her 30th bday.

What will the Kickstarter money be used for?

THIS MONEY IS FOR A DOCUMENTARY NOT FOR THE BLINKNOW CHARITY. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO DONATE DIRECTLY TO THE CHARITY PLEASE VISIT THEIR SITE -- www.blinknow.org

With the funds from the campaign, we plan to produce a feature length documentary film. We're one year into filming so far, and we plan to film until the new campus is complete in summer 2018. Our goal is to give the world that “savor every moment” perspective that comes after losing someone really close to you.

From Maggie: "If we could give people that perspective without them having to lose someone, that would be amazing."

From Jeremy: "Up until now this project has been basically a one man team of ME. The majority of this money will just go to hiring a good crew that can support us on this journey such as cinematographers, field producers, editors, sound recordist, and more!"

The Budget

We have some footage of the early years of Maggie through her personal videos as well as media outlets she has worked with in the past. But to truly complete this story, we need footage of where she currently is in her recovery and personal journey.

BASE GOAL: $150,000

The base goal we are setting for this campaign will help us reimburse those who've worked with us so far, continue capturing this story for another 6 months, and get started on post production. If we're able to reach our full stretch goal (1.25 million) it would enable us to shoot until the school is complete (summer 2018), finish the film, and provide a steady stream of short form content keeping you up to date and inspired!

STRETCH GOAL 1: $350,000

  • Allows us to shoot and edit until July 2017, start initial post production to build skeleton of story
  • Put out short form documentaries, photos, and content until August 2017.

STRETCH GOAL 2: $500,000

  • Allows us to shoot & edit until December 2017
  • Put out short form documentaries, photos, and content updates until January 2018

STRETCH GOAL 3: $750,000

  • Allows us to shoot & edit until March 2018
  • Put out short form documentaries, photos, and content updates until Summer 2018

STRETCH COMPLETION GOAL - $1.25 million

This would allow for completion of the entire film all the way to its first festival where we will premiere it and shop it around to distributors. It will enable our post-production costs that will require an editor, composer, color, audio mix, and distribution.

The approximate percentage breakdowns:

Professional Cinematographers: 37%,  Production Expenses: 17%, Kickstarter’s Share and Incentives: 17%, Gear Rental: 13%, Computers/Servers: 10%, Legal Fees: 6%.

 FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS?

- Principal photography is schedule for when?

We have been shooting for over a year now and I plan to shoot until Summer of 2018 when the new school and property is complete.

- What's the running time of the film?

Estimated 90 - 110 minutes

- Do you have more footages to show me?

We have several short documentaries we will be releasing over the course of the campaign, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

- What's the total budget expected for the film to completion?

We are estimated at 1.25million now to keep shooting until summer of 2018 with post starting April 2017 - December 2018 Approximately. This also helps us with Music and Sound finishing and getting into and to film festivals! See THE BUDGET section above for information on the Stretch Goals.

What happens if you don’t raise enough money?

We are hoping to raise as much money as we can through Kickstarter to enable us to give the maximum amount of back end  profits to the BlinkNow and the kids, keep control of the footage and safety over the children and control how we release it to make sure it reaches as many people as possible! But in the case we don't reach the full amount we need we will have the following options to MAKE SURE it gets done!

1. Jeremy will keep shooting as he has been by himself with no crew and self funding.

2. We engage other production companies and investors who are interested to complete funding. (But this lowers our creative control and the amount of money we can give back to BlinkNow, and potentially stops us from releasing short form content updates.

Risks and challenges

We won't lie, filming in a place like Nepal comes with many risks and numerous challenges. Fortunately, our team has filmed all over the world and we have the full support of BlinkNow, which has deep roots in Nepal.

Filmmaking is a difficult and expensive business. While we would love to be in full control of this film, there are several risks and challenges that come with backing this project:

- Shoot delays due to schedule alignments between team members, and situation on the ground with the Kopila Family.
- Post-production delays due to technical complications and/or funding requirements.
- The following reward fulfillments could be at risk if the film does not reach completion: digital or DVD delivery of film, premiere invites, and festival passes.

We're confident that with your support we can overcome all of these risks.
