This year we'll be back in Waco, TX on October 24th-26th. The convention center was newly renovated last year. Downtown Waco welcomes all of us geek, nerds, and gamer dorks with open arms once again.
You can see the Waco Convention Center in all it's glory here:
The best part about Waco though is the low cost of entertainment around the area. OK, that's only one thing. We've got tons of benefits such as lots of space, convenient location, lots of eating and shopping within two blocks of WaCon...oh, and the best part is that parking is F-R-E-E! And if you're flying in, Waco has a pretty nice airport too.
It's also a reasonable drive from most major cities in in the region: Dallas (1.5 hours), Austin (1.5 hours), San Antonio (3), Houston (3), Abilene (3), Lubbock (6), Oklahoma City (4), Tulsa (6), Little Rock (6), New Orleans (8), and Shreveport (4).
Just like last year we'll have some local sponsors as well as national ones. All contributing to goody bags, prizes, and volunteer rewards.
Though, before going any further we do want to talk about something:
We want to address last year's dice issue and apologize. This year, we got on this early and already have a plan in place for the dice pricing and printing. Shouldn't be an issue this time around.
OK, with that aside, hop over and take a quick look at our website. It got a nice new look for this year: www.wacogamecon.com
In other fun news, we're adding 4,000 sq. ft. of space to WaCon. This gives us some versatility in adding a few events and allows us to be more creative with our event space. This should be something everyone can appreciate.
We'll have a large Magic the Gathering cash tournament, a large Warmachine/Hordes event, a Warhammer 40K Golden Throne tournament, tons of card gaming, tons of board game events along with a dedicated board game room, dealers area, lots of demos, special guests, and something else fun we'll mention later.
The VIP room was an experiment that went over pretty well last year. We learned a major thing though. It was nice having the room out of the way to get some peace and relax. Unfortunately, it lead to an "out of sight, out of mind" thing for a few people.
To fix this issue, part of our new space is going to be used for the new VIP area. We should also have some neat new features for the VIP folks to enjoy during their downtime. In addition to the snacks and drinks that will be available to VIP'ers for free all weekend, we're going to have some catering brought in for Friday night. We want to keep adding value to our VIP packages.
While we're on the topic of new space, we should let you guys in on a few other neat things. We're going to have a few guest speakers this year. We didn't have any last year, because we wanted all of the locals to experience lots of hands on activities for their first event. This year, we're making the leap to start adding other features. We should have at least three, but we're still in discussions with several. Details will be announced as they are confirmed.
There's going to be an expanded dealers hall. Our expected number of vendors should be 20-22. We'll also have a separate area for promotional and information booths and will have a nice large space for those groups as well.
We did get some artists confirmed already though:
All three of these artists have some amazing work. Click through to their pages to see what they have to offer.
rk post and Clint Cearly have both agreed to supply some unique art pieces to everyone that attends the dinner with the guests this year. And in an act of amazing graciousness, Cearly will also be providing a piece of art for one of our charity auctions.
I'm sure most of you reading this already know what Munchkin is. Well, I can let you know that we have already secured some special Munchkin items that will likely only be available at conventions this year. We're also in discussions with Steve Jackson games about making a WaCon exclusive item :)
I'm sure you're wondering what all types of gaming we'll have. Well, the answer is nearly everything tabletop. Last year we had demos or tournaments for over 50 products. Our events will include, but are not limited to:
CCGs: Magic, YuGiOh, Cardfight Vanguard, My Little Pony, Pokemon
Miniatures: Star Wars X-Wing, Star Trek Attack Wing, D&D Attack Wing, Warhammer 40K, Warmachine/Hordes, Heroclix
Roleplaying Games: D&D Next, D&D 3E, Pathfinder, Shadowrun, Star Wars Edge of the Empire, Warhammer 40K RPG
Board Games: TONS of everything, including a free board game library to check out and use.
There was a fun idea thrown around a couple of months ago that we're following up on. We're going to have a "Play-And-Win" section added to our board game area. We will have a special section of games that when you play them during the weekend, your name will go into a drawing to win it. We're hoping this develops into a neat way for smaller publishers to get their item in front of people and get exposure for new products.
And that fun thing we mentioned a little while ago...this year we're adding in some cosplay flavor to WaCon. Why not? We're only a few days before Halloween this year. What better time to do some costuming.
We're going to have a full on costume contest. We'll be using the onsite auditorium. There will be a celebrity judge. And you yourself can have a crack and being a judge. Be sure to get your best costume on to walk the stage and win some prizes.
We'll have a full slate of events and presentations like we did last year. And the auctions will be even bigger and better. Our charity auctions will benefit a local no-kill animal shelter and a local food pantry.
We're going bigger and better this year and giving our attendees even more for their money. We want to see attendance grow as well as it can, while keeping our focus on fun, interactivity, and enjoyment.

The owners of www.cosplayallday.com have agreed to add to our prize package for the costume contest. Additionally, the winner of our costume contest will get a feature and interview on their website.
Danielle "Hellgirl" Lingo will be a guest at the show. She'll also be giving a presentation on beginning tips for good cosplay.
We just got a bunch of promos and decks for Magic the Gathering, Pokemon, and a bunch of dice to give away to Kickstarter backers that attend the convention!
Also, if you back at any level that gets you physical rewards, but cannot attend, we will mail them to you after the convention.
Dezzy Russell aka Dezzy Diamond has agreed to be a guest at WaCon. She will be doing panels on pattern making and wig design as well!
People were curious about some of the larger, headline events. We will definitely be hosting the following large events:
Warhammer 40K Golden Throne
Magic the Gathering Star City Games Inviational Qualifier
Warmachine/Hordes Special Tournament (Rules to come)
Friday Night Magic Special Event
The gaming will still cost nothing, but since Extra Life is for charity, we will be taking donations. But to encourage the donations, The Game Closet will match 50% of the donations in retail value for prizes and will draw names and award them to people that participate in a game! Should be a blast :)
Sonny Strait, the voice of Krillin from Dragonball Z will be a guest at WaCon!!
Risks and challenges
We learned a few things last year with the dice issue, which we've already fixed. We're also going to be doing a bit more with our space and with the scheduling of events.
As for delivery of items, that parts easy as most of the items are on site items.
We just need to figure out how to get all of you here to play :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
