THANK YOU EVERYONE! We have reached our goal! There's still a chance to get in on the great Rewards for a couple of days yet, and maybe help us reach our first stretch goal!
Howdy! My name is Diane Morrison, and I'm a hybrid science fiction and fantasy writer. I'm publishing a book called Gunsmoke & Dragonfire: A Fantasy Western Anthology.
This is a collection of stories about the West as you've never seen it before! Elven gunslingers fight for justice on the frontier. Martian sheriffs protect a settlement's water supply from bandits. Monsters out of nightmares stalk hapless frontier towns and small farms. Figures out of history interact with time-travelling wizards and rampaging dragons. Outlaws enlist the aid of mechanized wonders - or flee from them.

A few months ago, you helped me to publish a collection of my own Weird Western stories. This time I have teamed up with a stellar cast of 24 other international bestselling, award-winning, established, and outstanding emerging authors to bring you an amazing anthology that I know you'll never forget!
Our incredible team includes Aaron Siddall, our cover artist, who will also be making some of the art for the rewards, and Claire Ryan, our graphic artist, cover designer, and typesetter.
Our anthology will now include a story by New York Times bestselling author Diana L. Paxson, best known for her Chronicles of Westria series and for co-authoring the Mists of Avalon series!
I was a bit stunned by the caliber of writer that my little project attracted. Maybe it's because people are starting to get to know me through my work with the SFWA YouTube channel. Some of the best of today's traditionally and independently-published writers answered my call for submissions. They come from a variety of fields, and I think one of the greatest strengths of the resulting collection is the variety of takes on the theme. The stories I've curated are not only delightful SFF tales, but they remain western stories at heart as well.
This is why I'm appealing to you. This project has grown to be so much more than the tiny collection I originally envisioned. It's a big book - it'll be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 150,000 words when completed. And it deserves more attention than I can give it alone!
Here's my budget breakdown:
- $75 to list the book with IngramSpark, taxes & exchange rate included
- $500 to purchase stock (includes shipping)
- $500 for reward fulfillment
- $100 for marketing
- The rest will cover Kickstarter fees & unexpected expenses (and you always have those)
- At $2000, I will send each writer and the illustrator a complimentary copy
- At $2800, I can pay each writer a half cent a word, and the illustrator $50, in addition to their royalties
- At $3500, I can pay each writer 1 cent a word, and the illustrator $100, in addition to their royalties
- At $4500, I can pay each writer 3 cents a word, and the illustrator $300, in addition to their royalties
- At $9000, I can pay each writer 6 cents a word, which is professional rate, and pay the illustrator $500, in addition to their royalties
Most of the writers have also teamed up to help bring you some amazing rewards for your support! Keep your eye out for special, limited-availability rewards throughout the month as well!
First ten days: Author services packages

Risks and challenges
I found in my last project that my hardcover production was a bit delayed as I awaited blurbs, so that may be a factor again. Since some of the other authors are fulfilling rewards on their end when it's their books and skills that are offered, I will be dependent on them to do what they say they're going to do. It will take a few months to completely fulfill the podcast package, as each story must be read and recorded. And if this explodes beyond my expectations, there may be short delays in receiving rewards as greater numbers will require greater time to produce & ship. Otherwise, everything is in order!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
