About

As you have heard many times before, Kickstarter presents the perfect platform to breathe life into this rapidly growing group of ship commanders. Since community is the main goal of Bitter Void, these campaigns offer a means of organic growth that keeps pace with the overall sales.

With Squadron Attack being the core structure, I focused on making super smooth combat mechanics that are pure strategy. This will be enriched by several optional expansions and mini-game modules in the immediate future. From the many ship designers, come a wild assortment of offensive, defensive, and special abilities that provide endlessly challenging play.

With only 6 cards needed, everyone can get involved. No need to acquire hundreds of cards to populate a large powerful deck. We have also designed the cards to help facilitate even matches for lower level play, or more powerful Elite Challenges.

A turn based card game starting with 6 ships. Using strategic coordination of your 3 active Squadron Slots, attack your opponent with the main weapons or use tricky special abilities in order to stun or destroy his ships.

We are shooting for a likely delivery before December 24th. Worst case scenario, we will send out a certificate showing the Reward Package you bought, ensuring it will arrive by 12/23/2014.

  • Trial Pack (6pk): Simplicity at its finest. The perfect pack to help ease you into the fray.

  • Con Pack (10pk): With 40% Rank 2 or higher ships, this is a great way to start building your deck.

  • Utility Pack (16pk): At least 2 ships at Rank 3 or above. More battle for your buck.

  • KS Battle Pack (28pk): This campaign only pack, offers 23 ships at Rank 2 or above, and another 3 at Rank 3 and higher. A powerful deck in its own right, but a ridiculous deal at this price.

  • KS T3 Special (6pk): 6 Bonus Rank 3 or higher ships, for this campaign only!

  • KS SR4 Exclusives (2pk): We are designing 2 unique ships, available to certain Reward levels, which will not be produced again outside of this campaign. They will be numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity.

  • Custom Strategic Pack (64pk): We will hand select 64 powerful ships that are sure to impress. No less than 22 will be chosen from Ranks 3 through 5, with another 42 ships from Rank 2 and above.

  • Design Your Own Ship: You get to design and submit your own ship model. You choose one of our manufacturers, and suggest the stat weighting. We will work hard to make sure you are pleased with the finished product in keeping with our current specifications. You get 5 copies, one will be hand signed by me, and choose if it goes into Bitter Void production.

  • Create A Custom Ship Yard: This will be a new ship manufacturer in the Bitter Void world of Sol. Only you will be able to use the label for making ships in the future, and you get to start off by designing 3 just as above. Once we get the community up and running, you will be poised to have one of the first alliances with your own Ship Yard.

  • *Alpha Prototype Pull Tab Squadron Board: We have always intended to have a board that tracked your stats during battle, and this is your chance to get a prototype before they become available to anyone else.

  • *Alpha Prototype Resource Module Mini-Game: A fun module that adds the depth of mining and hauling resources to your standard battle. You could even use an additional person as your Resource Foreman and work as a team. Be the first to get these mock up boards!

  • Personal Face to Face: If we are going to be at any of the same conventions, I promise to set aside time for you. I am usually quite approachable, but I wanted to include this as an extra way of showing my appreciation. Each and every one of you that gets involved at this early stage makes it possible and, even more important, makes it worth doing.

  • Thank You! To each of you that help us get this dream off the ground. Whether it be through a pledge here on Kickstarter, through sharing to your Facebook, a Tweet, or just talking with your friends about it, this is all about you. We will send a shout out to you on every social site we have, including posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google Groups. The Commander, Commodore, and Admiral levels will also go on permanent display on a digital plaque in all of the listed sources, and any others we can find.

  • Stretch Goals: If we reach any of the stretch goals, there will be something in each for every backer level. There will also be some additional stretch rewards for backers of $42 and above.

The exploration of our solar system.
The exploration of our solar system.

After the first national colonization projects in Earth’s system, and the civil wars that followed, the corporate powers continued to grow and found ever less need for governance. They finally shed their parent governments in order to pursue real power, which came in the form of economic empires in the rich new environment our solar system offered. In the early years, Sol was ripe for the taking with little competition or resistance. Then, with the abundance of affordable ships, came the inevitable pirates and smaller companies trying to vie for their piece of the new and inviting pie.

With the first battles being crudely fought with ships ramming into one another, new weapon systems were created. Strategies were developed to protect and support the daily processes that were needed to keep things running, and provide profits for shareholders. Skirmishes were now found everywhere that was worth being, and even in random encounters at every dead pocket in Sol.

Whether a cargo ship or battle corvette, a mining craft or fighter, you must use tactics and strategy to defend your squadron by taking out the enemy.

How did you decide on a card game?
How did you decide on a card game?

This is a concept that I have toyed with for over 10 years, and recently found the right pieces to start finishing the puzzle. I love strategy games. Dice and random pulls from the deck are fun, though they have always felt like a contradiction when the object was to test ones intellect or tactical abilities. Chess has always represented the ultimate form of gaming to me, though I always felt it needed a modern spin that would take it to the next level. With the ever evolving Bitter Void world always present in my mind, I had to find a way to get it out. A collectible card game fit well, though it seemed that it would be unworthy of being a way to tell this story. Then one day in 2010 I took another run at the mechanics out of boredom. Attempting to produce a version to test play with some friends, I cut several aspects down to bare minimums. In doing this, I was hit with the realization that this was more like Chess than a card game. Then it all started coming together, which seems to be supported by the attitudes of everyone who has played it so far.

What exactly is Bitter Void?
What exactly is Bitter Void?

The question requires a lengthy answer, but I will try to extrapolate based on relevance to the card game. The bitter sucking void of space. To elaborate on that concept, the solar system would be the most harsh and unhospitable environment that humans have explored to date. Most persistent would be the absence of atmosphere, which presents the problem of finding enough oxygen to sustain life, also the lack of pressure would have many secondary effects that are equally unpleasant.

I suspect this isn’t what you were looking for, but that does explain where the name came from. The world of Bitter Void was conceived from the harsh reality of challenges we would face when venturing off planet and out into our system to reap the many benefits. I see a Sol (Earth’s solar system) that is growing and evolving based on two opposing, yet integral, principles; human desire and corporate profit. Bitter Void is the story of how that will unfold, told through a series of sandbox style environments that the users will have a major effect on. Though there are many “NPC” aspects to a good sandbox, I feel that the increasing saturation of the player element should be reflected in the ability for humans to change the storyline, both in depth and interval.

With the release of the Bitter Void Squadron Attack, we have a fun and quick dog fighting level that seems to be quite addicting. Obviously, a combat card game is no sandbox, though this presents a face to face platform that will evolve into many levels and types of tools that will determine how Sol grows and changes. There are many different types of cards and peripheral boards waiting to unspool into the Bitter Void community. One example is the Resource module that is being offered in prototype form. Next will come the Fleet Engagement expansion, which will introduce capital ships and modifying modules, to deepen the strategy and game play. Base Siege will follow and should prove to satisfy even the most entrenched strategic minds, with 4 additional base/station slots and 2 defense modules.

Where is the money going?
Where is the money going?

Right now, we are printing a few sheets at a time and hand cutting the cards for test play and demos. Obviously, I want to offer a higher quality product before offering it up for sale. The professional card stock and printing require higher volumes in order to make the price reasonable. The cutting process also needs to be upgraded in order to make the sleek uniform cards, run after run, which we collectors like to have. Same for the packaging, which can really only be ordered in large quantities and requires special equipment to seal. Last, but most important, is shipping the richly deserved Rewards to you.

Any amounts above the goal will go directly towards the stretch goals, and then into producing more cards to sell at the conventions. I believe strongly that taking care of the backers and players is most important, not only for making the product possible, but also for the input and community that this process creates.

  • Professional printing ($900)
  • Octagon Die Cutting ($400)
  • Quality Packaging ($150)
  • Reward Shipping ($300)
What comes next?
What comes next?

While I hope this becomes a large, though likely dysfunctional, family of geeks like myself, I will do everything in my power to put the fun of us players before the profit margin. That being said, what’s more fun than expansions and mini-games? This is only worth doing if you are all having fun with me.

This first Kickstarter is intended to get the cards at a more professional level and grow the community at a reasonable pace. Over the next few months of conventions and game shop battles, we will also be finalizing Squadron Attack in preparation for the first tournaments.

Risks and challenges

As always, lead time on printing of cards could make December 24th delivery a bit tight. Our biggest challenge will be keeping up with orders if they get too crazy. I am confident that we can handle any issues that may come up and deliver the anxiously awaited Retro Placeholder Series, Squadron Attack cards into your hot little hands as expected.
Our policy is more desk in the family room, rather than open door. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to use the Kickstarter blog or messaging, or any of the other outlets listed so that we can talk.
