So....The Coracle project. I'd like to get into the recording studio and make an album of new, song-based material. The last time, Kickstarter supporters funded an album of instrumental guitar music called SLY GUITAR. If it was you, Thank You. This time it's songs. I have a least four albums worth but I'm going to restrict this recording to 12 or 13 pieces.
I could make a snazzy video of me looking you in the eye to ask for your support, but I thought I'd just give you an example of the kind of songs you'll be helping to get properly recorded. Besides, who wants to look at my face on a full stomach? The video is a little home recording of me performing a song called 'Pierrepoints Pendulum' and tells the story of Ruth Ellis (no relation) who was the last woman to be executed in the UK. The executioner was Albert Pierrepoint.
When the album exists in physical format, I will get out and promote it with live performance.
Stylistically, my new songs fall somewhere between folk and punk. And they often tell stories. You can hear a lot of what will appear on Coracle by visiting my Soundcloud page.
When the funding comes through, I will be able to pay a producer and interesting session players. There a several I would love to work with again. The bottom line will be me in the studio, self-producing with maybe one session player. Who knows. Anything can happen in this strange old world.
And I'm going to find a talented, young illustrator to do the cover artwork. I was trained as an illustrator/designer myself but it's many years since I picked up a radiograph, so it will be nice to work with young talent.
Your support will pay for studio time, producer, session players, mastering, cover artwork, pressing and postage. I'll be at the end of an email if you want any more information. And I'll keep in touch with updates, photos and videos that only you can access.
If you've enjoyed my work with artists such as Peter Gabriel, The Stranglers, Peter Hammil, The Vibrators, Judge Smith and many others, I think you will like this new album.
If you lovely people pledge more than the target, here are some other projects that your money could support.
A 5 album box set of the Art Gallery series of Electronic instrumentals released many years ago.
A vinyl version of Coracle.
A short run of the legendary Zestra CD featuring the vocal talents of Mr Paul Roberts. This was an album of songs written for The Stranglers but not used. High quality 8-track demos.
A book of my music photography.
While I've got your attention, you might like to know I have written a novel called 'A Gift Of Serenity'. It's available through Amazon.
Thanks for taking a look at CORACLE. I do hope we can make the journey together!
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges involved in making Coracle are the same as any other recording project. Not enough time, not enough money etc. The amount I've asked for is a realistic budget to create a basic singer/songwriter album of 12 to 13 songs over 6 days of recording and mixing using at least a couple of session musicians . Any funding above the basic ask adds icing to the cake in terms of paying a producer, more session musicians and more time in the studio etc. I don't aim to fly to the other side of the world to record it and I am very aware of how to keep on top of the costs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
