About this project
WOW! THANKS TO ALL YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE OUT THERE WE'VE JUST SURPASSED OUR GOAL! HUGE THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT WE'VE BEEN SHOWN! IF YOU HAVE YET TO DONATE--PLEASE DON'T BE DISSUADED BECAUSE WE'VE MADE OUR GOAL--WE STILL NEED ANOTHER $1000 ON TOP OF IT TO DO THIS ISSUE RIGHT! EVERY DOLLAR HELPS! THANK YOU!
Swoon is a NY/LA-based independent music, fashion and philosophy media project. Over the past few years, it's grown from a little zine to a nationally distributed magazine. We started with a focus on local fashion and photography in New York and grew to encompass art, music and culture on both coasts and beyond. Swoon exists to spread inspiration. Our magazine and our parties are our gifts to the world.
Swoon’s mission is to feature insightful writing on music, art and culture alongside luminous fashion photography--documenting and celebrating the things we think matter today and preserving still other fragments from the ever-widening memory hole…with something you can hold in your hands. Yes, print is dead, but long live print! We relish the paper object, the physical interaction with the page.
Swoon embraces seriousness and frivolity in equal measure. We seek the depths of surface and the beautiful surfaces of depth. Swoon is about beauty above all else. We seek the sublime. Swimming in our toxic cultural sea, we find glittering jewels hidden in the muck—and it is these which we wish to share with our readers.
We're getting ready to relaunch the project with our 6th installment--the Techno/logy Issue--using techno in the broadest possible sense--exploring the use of technology in music, art and culture in both historical and contemporary perspectives.
We're writing about 20 years of techno from Detroit to Germany, Kraftwerk to Kompakt, Mad Mike to Magda, as well as legendary pioneers in art and music Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Tony Conrad, and some of our favorite contemporary musicians--Glass Candy, Pictureplane, Stellar Om Source, Hecuba, Light Asylum, We Are The World/Dreamers, Nite Jewel, Daedelus, Terminal Twilight, Julia Holter and more that you'll have to get the issue to find out about!
The issue features writing by Shaun Frente, Jason Louv, Lindsay Aveilhe, Bianca Guillen, Zeljko McMullen, Micki Pellerano, Jeralyn Mason, Drew Denny, Charles Mallison, Wells Pollock, Ramona Gonzalez, Quinn Brayton, Mecca Vazie Andrews and Ricard Zee; original art by Owleyes, Christelle Gualdi (Stellar Om Source), Suzy Poling, and Eric Nordhauser (Show Cave), as well as photography by Eden Batki, Benjamin Gallardo, Jeaneen Lund, Mathjis Labadie, Christelle de Castro, and Kelly McKay. The print issue will contain a password to access supplementary online content featuring even more artists and musicians, expanded interviews, videos and audio of some of our favorite music!
This project is a labor of love and needs your support! We need funds to print the issue and to re-launch our new website. We get our funding from advertising,* pre-orders and our own (meager) pockets. We are counting on this Kickstarter campaign to bring the issue to life in glorious full-color, glossy print! If we surpass our goal we will use the funds to produce our next installment--the Dreams Issue--due out Fall 2012. You can pre-order your issue or subscribe for the year by donating to this campaign.
Please support independent media!
