What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Background:

After three years of development, we are proud to offer the first 100% open source and closed loop 3D printer. The Closed Loop (CL) 1720 is a very strong, reliable system built on an extremely rigid extruded aluminum frame. Additionally, the CL1720 is based on robust and proven, open-source software that is free to the 3D printing community. 

Closed loop motor control systems are typically very expensive. These systems typically require unique software packages that can also be very expensive. In addition, the software provided with most closed loop control systems is typically not open for customization or modification. However, the software running the AaronLouis CL1720 and Open Loop (OP)1720 systems is completely free and open to the 3D printing community. No additional software license costs. 

This line of printers is compatible with third party slicing engines such as the popular slicers like Slic3r, Simplify3D, KISSlicer, and Cura. Both printers can be controlled using Repetier-Host software and allow extreme user-flexibility in terms of using choosing your preferred slicing engine and controller software.

The closed loop motor control system will address 3D prints that have degraded quality and dimensional accuracy due to missing steps. Closed loop motor control ensures that the system does not miss steps and allows the printer to maintain the highest print quality while simultaneously allows for increased print speeds.Without closed loop motor control, every 3D printer's output will suffer from missed steps and decreased dimensional accuracy.

AaronLouis 3D printers were designed to push additive manufacturing capabilities past "rapid prototyping" as well as printing parts that lack structural integrity. For our standard temperature printer, this goal is achieved by expanding customer filament options to anything that can be extruded within the 315 deg c. extruder nozzle and 300 deg c. hotbed temperature range. Our high temperature versions of the CL1720 and OL1720 systems are capable of extruding at temperatures above 400 deg c. This very wide temperature range allows for virtually every filament option to be available, including exotic materials like fiber reinforced PEEK or PEI. 

Both systems are based on an extremely rigid extruded aluminum frame that is surrounded by 16 GA, brushed aluminum sheet material. This design further increases rigidity as well as provides a very clean and industrial look to the printer.  

Extruders:

The extruders included as part of the CL1720 and OP1720 systems are based on an all metal design along with stainless-steel drive gears that are powered by NEMA11 motors. These motors are 13x the torque of standard NEMA11 motors and provide improved power curve profiles for more consistent extrusions. This advanced extruder design, combined with a low-profile, removable hotbed design is extremely durable and ready for extended use.  The independently-controlled, dual print head provides the capability of printing with a support material for complex shapes, 2 different colors for multi-color prints, or 2 different materials for hybrid part designs.

Hotbed:

The removable hotbed design is based on two pieces of .25″ thick 6061 aluminum plates that encase three high-temperature, low-profile, heater elements. These high temperature elements are capable of reaching temperatures of 300 deg c. Finally, the hotbed is driven by a high-torque (400oz/in) NEMA 23 stepper motor that is connected to a 16MM ballscrew drive to increase accuracy and extended durability.

As previously noted, the low-profile removable hotbed design increases productivity by providing customers with the ability to quickly remove finished parts from the printer rather than waiting several minutes between prints for cool down. In order to significantly reduce system downtime between prints, the AaronLouis hotbed design allows for another hotbed surface-plate to simply be dropped onto the existing base-plate.

All AaronLouis systems allow for the user to easily interface with the printer given USB, Stand Alone, and SD Card capability. Users can upload several drawings to a single SD Card or stand alone computer that can be used to quickly send new print jobs to the 3D printer.

Closed Loop Control:

The following video provides an example of how closed loop motor control allows for continued prints, even when you push the extruder completely away from the object being printed. We do not recommend attempting this demonstration with any other printer as this video was intended to demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of the CL1720 system. Even after two separate pushes that physically moved the extruder away from the object being printed, the CL1720 requires no recalibration or adjustment and continues to print a great looking part. The closed loop motor control system continues to actively compensate for any missed steps, maintaining quality at higher print speeds.

In other words, the closed loop motor control eliminates missed steps, significantly improves print quality, and allows for increased print speeds.

Comparison:

After highlighting some of the features of the Dark Chip Series of 3D printers, you now have an idea of what each model is capable of doing. To illustrate how each printer compares to other printers on the market, a comparison was made with several other printers brands and their system's technical specifications.

After reviewing the previous table, it is easier to see how the AaronLouis Dark Chip Series of printers offer more build volume, more material options, and more overall workflow compatibility for a better price. At $5850, the CL1720HT is the only model that offers closed loop motor control in this class, even compared to it $20,900 competitor. The OL1720S offers a similar build volume on a more robust mechanical design for over $6000 less then a competitor of similar specifications. The OL1720HT offers the widest material selection of any of its competitors at a very economical price.

With the Dark Chip Series of 3D printers, you can run what materials you want, with what software you want, using a reliable printer configuration at a reasonable price. 

This system is a game changer because it is the first all metal, closed loop 3D printer that is based on open source controller software. Without an all-metal design, most 3D printers cannot print materials other than ABS and PLA. Without closed loop motor control, existing 3D printers would suffer from degraded print quality and dimensional accuracy due to missed steps. Missed steps are common among most 3D printers however the effects of these "missed steps" are sometimes not visible on smaller prints. However, larger prints tend to show visible impacts from missed steps due to the print size. In addition, open source controller software allows customers to save a significant amount of money and time re-learning another slicer and controller set. Both AaronLouis systems are based on common, open source controller software sets that allow customers to have the freedom to make changes and/or adjustments to their sofware configuration, if needed. Also, there is no need for purchasing additional software licenses or maintenance agreements as the software is 100% open source.

Closed loop printers allow customers, users, and 3D printing environments to change while the system is printing. For example, the video illustrating the system auto correcting provides customers and/or potential investors with the confidence that the AaronLouis systems can be used in environments as well as numerous other audiences.

Risks and challenges

Our team's past three+ years of work has been full of challenges and design rework efforts. Throughout this process, we have worked with several major additive manufacturing companies to determine the best combination of printer capabilities while focusing on a design that maximizes printer strength and reliability. Due to this design focus coupled with feedback from other additive manufacturing system providers and users, we have incorporated numerous adjustments from our original design in order to increased capability. Even though each of these revisions have introduced their own unique set of challenges, our team has worked very hard to overcome and produce our production prototype shown in the attached videos.

From the beginning, our main goal was to ensure that our printer's all-metal design could be combined with industry-proven open-source controller software that could be updated, revised, and/or changed by the user. We don't recommend that users make changes to the existing software however, users have that option and the software is free.

This strategy allows our system to be much more affordable and very competitively priced against other printer systems with, or even without, closed loop motor control. Without the inclusion of open source controller software, our system would be much more expensive and we wanted to provide an affordable printer that is loaded with features and based on a strong, reliable design.

With our main goal in mind, our new challenge is driving down the unit cost of each printer even further through competitive pricing agreements that are based on purchasing higher quantities of material.

This Kickstarter will help address this challenge by ensuring that we have a sample production lot worth of material to substantiate our competitive pricing agreement requests with each of our vendors.

Additionally, we are interested in confirming the market's demand for our printer's capabilities as well as open-source, closed-loop motor control.

We have already solidified production and manufacturing facilities that will allow our team to produce at least 20 systems per month. In the event that the market demands higher quantities per month, then we will continue working with one of our local industrial facility partners to secure a lease for a much larger production facility. Securing these types of leases is a very common practice in our location due to the high focus on manufacturing, engineering, and production efforts that support local Naval installations as well as numerous manufacturing facilities.
