This project is based upon the Tikki Trolls of the Bo'Pha Islands -- a subspecies of "old school" trolls conceived and developed by Mortal Arrow. These miniatures are intended to be used for tabletop role-playing games and by skirmish-style fantasy war gamers. The entire Tikki Troll set for this Kickstarter will include nine body types with dozens of different interchangeable heads, arms and accessories for creating an army of endlessly unique tribal-themed trolls.
"My peers in this institution are no doubt familiar with the Trolls of this northern clime -- foul, feral creatures of cave and fen, heavy of hair and long of arm. Those of the South are different entirely. They gather in tribal groups- the “Tikkis” of which you have heard- under huge, brutish specimens. These “Kahunas” dominate their lesser kin, forcing a semblance of order upon the beasts...." - excerpt from the 2,307th Synod of Sages, Wai'Toshi University
These aren't your average trolls ... what with their unchecked regenerative powers, strong tribal society and propensity for certain arachnids. You can read more about the origin and habits of these tribal trolls at the Mortal Arrow website.
Paul Muller has agreed to sculpt the entire Tikki Troll collection. He's earned a reputation as one of the finest sculptors of fantasy miniatures. A Muller sculpt screams "character" and examples of his work can be seen at Otherworld, Privateer and Heresy among other fine miniature companies. The complete Tikki Troll set will include warriors (3), death apostates (2), several leader types lovingly called Kahunas (3) and even an arachnid rider (1). The trolls will vary from 38 mm to 54 mm in height (depending upon pose and whether a Kahuna). Their garb and weapon choices are inspired by the ancient warrior cultures of the South Pacific islands (grass skirts, war clubs, barbed javelins abound). These are blended with an arachnid theme and more macabre elements.
We've also employed the wildly imaginative sculpting skills of Pedro Navarro to offer Backers the option of Add-On miniatures that fit nicely with our Tikki Troll concepts. Known as a master of all things that creep, crawl or slither, he'll be creating arachnids, insects and gastropods of human-size up to whale-size monstrosities. Pedro's work can be seen at Otherworld and at Mortal Arrow's very own Bazaar.
Mortal Arrow strives to give you options! With that in mind, the heads and arms for all of the Tikki Troll models will be interchangeable with the different body types, so the number of different combinations is nearly limitless. The Tikki Troll range is designed so that you can fully engage the bizarre mutations and diverse weaponry one might expect to see from Mortal Arrow's reboot of the iconic creature. But if you choose to keep it classic, each miniature is also supplied with a set of standard clawed arms for a simple feral look. All sculpting will be based upon the artwork of long-time collaborator Bobby Penafiel.
Each member of the Tikki Troll tribe will be unlocked as the Funding Goals are met. The first three sculpts have already been completed. Look further down this page for photos of the actual assembled metal masters.
FREE Stretch Rewards will also be unlocked if we are able to significantly exceed the Funding Goal. These rewards are listed in the Reward Path below. Only the highest Pledge Level (Tikki Tribe) can qualify for the FREE Stretch Rewards. This project will also include Add-Ons for related miniatures and terrain pieces -- how could we have an Arachnid Rider without an Arachnid?
What's included so far?
We’ve hit our first Stretch Goal! Your Tikki Trolls can now ride in style on top of their very own enormous arachnid. The current funding level has unlocked a total of four different Tikki Trolls models. These include the three Tikki Trolls in the Base Set and the Tikki Troll Rider (Warrior IV). We have also unlocked four Add-Ons in total.
Unlocked Tikki Trolls:
- Tikki Troll Warrior II (38mm tall)
- Tikki Troll Warrior III (43mm tall)
- Big Kahuna Tikki Troll (49mm tall)
- Tikki Troll Warrior IV (33 mm tall – squatted rider pose)
- Giant Pedipalp ($20/each)
- Tikki Totem Set ($5/each)
- Bag of Beetlings ($5/each)
- Bag of Arachlings ($5/each)
Have the Tikki Trolls been sculpted?
Yes!! The first three Tikki Trolls have already been sculpted by Paul Muller. You can use these as a good indication as to how Paul will interpret Bobby's artwork. Here's a quick composite picture of different assembled variants of each of the master casts. Detailed images of each troll miniature can be found further below.
Even with only three Tikki Trolls completed, you can see there are many options for assembling into themed groups as illustrated below.
The Path to Stretch Goals and Rewards
Each unlocked Tikki Troll expands your choices for the "Lurking Gang", "War Band" and "Tikki Tribe" Pledge Levels. Free Stretch Rewards start at the $9,500 Funding Level and only apply to "Tikki Tribe" Pledge Levels and above.
What’s next at $5,000 Funding Level?
Let’s get to $5,000 to unlock the dreaded Death Kahuna and a horde of Giant Rhino Beetles Add-Ons. That’s less than $1,500 in additional pledges, or as little as 15 Backers! We're ready to sculpt more. Here's the next Tikki Troll design. Please help us get to this next funding level!
The next Tikki Troll Stretch Goal:
We’ve learned that every tribe needs a shaman. The Tikki Trolls are no different, well except that their shaman, the Death Kahuna, calls upon a dark and terrifying power, the Spider Queen. The Death Kahuna and its disciples, the Death Apostates, revel in grotesque rituals that alter their body and mind. These specimens’ mutations run amok and they even integrate parts of their revered arachnids into their own body. The Death Kahuna is designed to have up to four separate arms attached; two of which are huge grabbing pincers from a gigantic arachnid. Its “normal” left arm wields a pair of boney arachnid knives in a mutated hand. Its right arm holds the Dread Staff of Khabissol (ringed in shrunken heads and topped by an animated troll’s head). The Death Kahuna has two options for its head. A more traditional i) crown of shrunken heads, and ii) a skittery crown of arachnid legs. This huge troll wears a heavy grass suit with arachnid-style breast plate. An assortment of decanters and pouches dangle from its belted skirt.
*All arms, heads and accessories are interchangeable between Warrior and Apostate Trolls.
The next Add-On or Stretch Reward
$5,000 in total funding unlocks three spectacular Giant Rhino Beetle kits. Each of the all resin kits is composed of the same body and 6 legs, but the horned carapace and head are different are each one of three styles. Pedro Navarro has outdone himself when sculpting these critters -- allowing any of the three heads to fit seamlessly with each horned carapace. See here for how the kits are designed to allow for up to nine different looking Giant Rhino Beetles. These are truly giant-sized with some combinations being over 100 mm long and over 70 mm tall. We're even going to explore designing the Tikki Troll Rider (Warrior IV) to also fit upon one of these insectoid tanks.
Which Tikki Trolls have been unlocked?
The "Tikki Troll Rider" is squatting forward ready to sit atop of either a Giant Pedipalp (unlocked Add-On) or Giant Rhino Beetle (next Add-On to be released). It has two right arm options: i) a kung fu-grip claw for holding on tight and ii) a holding its deadly and silent blowgun. There are also 2 similar options for its left arm: i) kung fu-grip claw, and ii) a mutated double-arm perfect for a steady shot with its blowgun. There are two head options with cheeks puffed and ready to blow. One is an unsettling “double face” mutant certain to strike terror as its passes by astride its silent steed.
The Tikki Troll Warrior II is carrying a large saw-toothed war club and raised fist. It comes with two accessories, i) a Troll-faced shield and ii) a small leimano war club. The carved shield is designed to be glued to the Troll's back as if carrying on long journeys. Alternatively, it can be glued to the raised right arm and glued in a number of dynamic battle poses. The leimano club can be glued on its belt or chest strap. The leiomano can even be clipped at the handle and added to the top and bottom of the fist, providing a second weapon for the Troll. Optional left arm includes the mutated "double clawed" for extra terror, and extra damage.
The Tikki Troll Warrior III is the largest Warrior-type. Its right arm swings a giant leiomano lined with sharp teeth. The left arm is a similarly raised fist that is perfectly suited for holding one of its two accessories -- a carved arachnid shield. The second accessory is a hooked war club that can be glued to various positions on the troll's body, or attached directly to the fist for another weapon-wielding hand. The most intimidating piece is undoubtedly the alternate "mutant" right arm hurling two bone-barbed javelins. Like the other warriors, this fella sports a few gnarly shrunken heads, tribal flasks and pouches.
This is the biggest "old school" troll you can find. Coming in at nearly 2" tall (that's 10 feet in most gaming scales), the Big Kahuna is one tough son-of-a-gun. It is attired in a crude vest of tough shells and sports a number of ghastly shrunken heads, including a not-so-pretty barrette. The Big Kahuna has two intimidating heads to choose from and two different arm variations as well. The right hand has a throwing club for lethal blunt-force trauma. The left hand carries a huge leiomano tipped with a wicked bone barb. The most gruesome aspect is the alternate left arm carrying a decapitated troll's head with a wriggly spine sprouting from the back. The spectacular Club of Arms is a truly awesome weapon 50mm long, with no less than 5 fully-animated troll arms ready to do loads of extra damage.
Which Add-Ons have been unlocked?
Giant Pedipalp ($20/each)
The Giant Pedipalp is a truly wicked arachnid. This massive metal miniature is considerably larger than most other "giant" spiders and scorpions. So at $20 it is a steal. Already sculpted by Pedro Navarro guarantees a perfect blend of fantasy and realism. This model is ready to ship immediately!!
Tikki Columns ($5/set)
The first Add-On is the Tikki Totems terrain set. These resin cast totem poles are modular and able to use small magnets for constructing columns of different heights and styles. The set includes 5 different 10mm diameter segments ranging from 25mm to 40mm in height. The cost per Tikki Totems terrain set is $5.
Bag of Bugs ($5/bag)
The second Add-On are the Bag of Bugs series. There are two types: i) Beetlings and ii) Arachlings. The Beetlings range from 10mm to 20mm in length. The Arachlings are non-spider, non-scorpion arachnids or various types. These will be sculpted by Mr. Bug Man himself, Pedro Navarro! Perfect for creating a swarms. The final number of bugs in each bag is yet to be determined and will be based on casting costs. A minimum of 4 is guaranteed. Each bag of bugs will cost $5.
Risks and challenges
Mortal Arrow LLC has already commissioned Paul Muller to make the first 3 miniatures: two Warrior Trolls and the Big Kahuna. These are completed and the masters have been made. Pedro has also finished at least half of the Add-On miniatures as well. These sculpts have also been mastered at a reputable molding house in the USA, so castings of all of these are guaranteed and can be ready to ship within 2 months. So if the project funds, and no other Stretch Goals are met, you will have three trolls to choose from. If the further Stretch Goals are met, then the remainder of the project's miniatures will be completed and paid for using the funds raised from this Kickstarter.
Sculpting represents more than 50% of the cost of the project. I expect that it will take Paul up to 8 months to complete the remaining greens.
Most other costs are related to making the molds and casting the actual miniatures. My experience is that molding can take an additional 2 months. I am also allowing 2 months for Mortal Arrow's small group of helpers to sort, pack and ship the Rewards.
I've pegged $7,500 to be about the break even point for Mortal Arrow with this project. Because the first three sculpts and masters are made and paid for by Mortal Arrow, I have a firm understanding of the costs of both the smaller and larger Trolls for this project.
I'm keeping this project small and well-defined so that I can deliver on my promises.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
