Parents around the world struggle to make kids wash their hands every day. Clean hands are vital to children staying healthy. Most infections are spread among children within classrooms. Moms, you can let your little ones have fun washing their hands in schools just by sending a SoaPen with their lunch box. Now imagine your kids always coming home with clean hands!
SoaPen makes handwashing fun! SoaPen’s unique soap composition allows children to draw on their dry hands and in removing the traces of this drawing, they wash their hands for the ideal span of 20- 40 seconds. Children, caretakers and teachers can easily carry their SoaPen with them and never something that is forgotten.
We are thrilled to offer a number of exciting rewards for our Kickstarter backers. SoaPens for your kids and you, postcards featuring our launch collection, and fun stickers to decorate and personalize your SoaPen.
Sanitizers are known to reduce the natural immunity of children as the powerful ingredients kill the good and bad bacteria. A majority of the parents in urban populations are now depending on sanitizers when soap and water can do a better job of removing dirt.
In developing nations, 800 children under the age of 5 die every day due to infectious illnesses, 50% of which can be prevented by the simple act of washing hands with soap. Visits to low-income schools in India and the US, as well as urban slums in Mumbai, taught us that there was not only lack of awareness, but in the cases where the benefits of good hygiene practices were known, parents and children would still not wash their hands.
With SoaPen, we are taking something that children enjoy doing, that is, drawing on their hands to teach them that hand washing should be a daily routine.
Our very first collection is available as a pack of 3 with 3 exciting colors: Oy! Orange, Go! Green, and Bing! Blue. Each SoaPen is in a 9 mL (0.3 OZ) roll-on bottle. With your generous donations, we are working towards introducing more colors in the future.
Just like a pen, simply twist open the cap, and roll the soap on your hands. Get creative! Mark the front and back of your hands, and don’t forget to include your fingers and palms. Add a small amount of water at first and rub your hands together to lather your drawing. Wash off all the lather with more water, and you’re good to go.
Each SoaPen lasts up to 60 hand washes. An intuitive gradient helps you keep track of your washes, as you go!
Playful: Easy for parents and kids, hand washing is no longer a chore with SoaPen. It’s simplicity and playfulness makes kids want to hand wash at every opportunity, as they’re excited by the variety of colors and endless patterns they can draw!
Portable: SoaPen's compact size makes it perfect for portability. Replace your sanitizer with a SoaPen, as sanitizers are known to weaken your immune system since the powerful ingredients kill both the bad and good bacteria.
No Mess: Compared to a pump bottle which can get messy, SoaPen’s roll-on method is spill-proof. SoaPen is easy to wash off, even if you accidentally stain your clothes!
The founding team of three industrial designers, met while studying at the Parsons School of Design in New York and conceptualized SoaPen in the summer of 2015 right after graduating. Passionate about working in the social innovation sphere, they learnt of the grave hygiene barriers in developing countries through the Wearables for Good Challenge by UNICEF, frog design and ARM technology. Visits to low-income schools in India and the US, as well as urban slums in Mumbai, taught us that there is a lack of awareness of the benefits of good hygiene practices.
SoaPen won the challenge, and we got the opportunity to turn our idea from paper to a reality. We used our funding from UNICEF to develop the soap composition at lab scale. We want to scale up our production quickly and need your support through Kickstarter. As our company grows, our goal is to focus on bringing SoaPens to stores, iterate on packaging, develop SoaPen in other forms, and leverage our e-commerce website. By scaling up to large retailers and through our online sales, we will be able to develop our social mission.
The funds are primarily going towards scaling the production in the United States which includes packaging, formulation and distribution. With this first production run, we will fulfil Kickstarter rewards and donate soap to low-income communities in need.
On meeting our goal on Kickstarter, our team is going to conduct a campaign at a low-income school where we teach children the importance of hand hygiene. We’ve conducted these in schools in the past, and have seen hand hygiene retention last longer following these.
The SoaPens will be sponsored through the rewards, and the campaign costs will be covered with leftover funds from our goal.
We’ve been fortunate to create a lot of buzz around our cause, and receive invaluable mentorship from UNICEF. Special thanks to A/D/O for their beautiful location in Brooklyn, NY.
Risks and challenges
With requests from people all over wanting to get their hands on SoaPens, we’re scaling to factories for the first time. We know this is possible, and have identified the right partners to help us do this. As our process is highly iterative, we’re still limiting our run to keep our production relatively small and manageable by our small team. We want the opportunity for our backers to give feedback on the colors, fragrance and consistency.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
