Customers who love our eco-friendly mats will frequently make requests for certain colours, themes our sizes. One of the requests made most often is:
Mats with a distinctively Canadian feel and theme.
We listened and have started this campaign to make it viable to produce them.
MadMatters has designed a mat that is:
- super absorbent
- practical (easy to care for, vacuum or machine wash)
- long lasting
- beautiful with a truly Canadian vibe.
Eco-friendly: First and foremost we wanted it to be eco friendly. We selected our favourite, family run, business to manufacture our mats.
Our "Colours of Canada" will be made from recycled materials: cotton remnants from the garment industry and recycled water bottles bound for the landfill.
Absorbency: Each of our 4 Beautiful Canadian seasons poses unique cleaning challenges and a lot of moisture which can damage wood floors and pose a safety hazard.
Cotton is the most absorbent natural fibre on the market. It will absorb 3 to 4 times its weight in water. When you or your kids or your pets wipe your feet on our mats, the cotton upper will trap the water so that it does not end up on your clean floors.
Easy to care for: Let's face it. The easier something is to care for, the more we like and use it. Our new HugRug vacuum beautifully. Just wait for the dirt to dry and vacuum as you would with any carpet. You don't have to worry about the mat being sucked up into the vacuum or becoming entangled with loose strings and fringes as there aren't any.
If you have a particularly nasty spill or or have stepped in and transferred something "moist" and yucky to your mat, you can pop it in your own washing machine or take it to the laundry mat and wash it as you would any large load. No need for a dryer. Hang until completely dry, vacuum with a brush attachment and your mat will not only look as good as new, it will become more absorbent after each wash.
Long lasting: The longer we can use an item, the better it is for the environment. Long lasting means that items enter the landfill far less often. Every time we see the 5 year guarantee on our HugRug mats, we smile. 5 YEARS!!! Think about it. How often do we see any guarantees these days? HugRug offers a 5 year guarantee on something you step on daily and deliberately get dirty. This mat may be the most frequently used item in your entire house and it is the item with the great guarantee. How cool is that?
Beautiful "Make necessity beautiful. Make beauty necessary." Ann Michaels, Fugitive Pieces
Our plan is to donate a mat for each micro home built by "Homes for Heroes" for homeless vets suffering from PTSD. We wanted a mat that said a big, warm "Welcome Home" and "Thank you for your service" each time these heroes walk in their door. We want them to feel the love and appreciation that Canadians have for them and for the freedom and opportunities that their sacrifice has provided for each and every one of us. So we asked our favourite Canadian artist, Erica Dornbush, to put this message and this feeling into an image and boy did she deliver. You can read about Erica and see her work here:
A little about us - Fred and I are not hard-core Greenies. We do not buy our underwear from the Thrift Store and we do not follow bottle drinkers around chanting "shame".
We do own a Soda Stream and love it. We do compost. And we also use toothpaste far past its expiration date. We used to take our hotel shampoo bottles and soap to the women's shelter but have since learned better.
Maybe that's the best way to describe us – when we know better, we do better. MadMatters has evolved into a manifestation of that. We found better products and want to share those great finds with you.

Risks and challenges
As with any custom product meeting the minimum order quantity is the biggest risk. The challenge is to generate enough sales to cover the upfront costs of design, testing and samples. With your support of pre-orders, this greatly reduces our risk.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
