Hey Everybody!  I'm starting a theater company called The Barkada Theater Project and the inaugural production, The Duties and Responsibilities of Being A Sidekick (aka TDAROBAS) will be making its debut at the Minnesota Fringe Festival this August.

Before I go any further, the above image is not my work.  The photography was done by Sara Ochs, and the illustration/design is by Eric Sharp.

Truth be told, my overall funding goal is much higher than $300, but that is the minimum I'd need to get the ball rolling, so even if this goal is met, please keep spreading the word.

A little about The Barkada Theater Project:
My artistic vision is to create a theater company that tells stories of Americans of Asian descent.  Many Asian American theater companies tell stories focused on our respective cultures, highlighting what makes those cultures different from the mainstream American culture.  What Barkada will do is put the focus on our similarities and our shared experience(s) as Americans.  While Asian Americans have been gaining representation in film and on TV over the last few years, there is still this idea that Asian is foreign, and I want to create a space specifically devoted to the experiences of Americans of Asian descent, such as myself, whose day to day existence is more American than Asian, whether they were born here in the states or abroad.

Inspired by Cervantes' Don Quixote de La Mancha and Bruce Lee's Kato in The Green Hornet series, The Duties and Responsibilities of Being A Sidekick (TDAROBAS) tells the story of Barrel Man, the loyal and trusty Filipino sidekick to the Asian American Superhero, Gentleman Li.

With Barrel Man's sidekick friends, Paso Doble and Fruit Fly, we get a glimpse into the world of Superhero Sidekicks and the things they do to find success in the highly competitive Super industry.

As a sidekick, Barrel Man just might have what it takes to catch his big break and finally join the Superheroes' union, ALIAS, where he'll be eligible for health insurance and liability coverage!

And while Barrel Man proves himself to be a skillful crime-fighter, possibly even better than Gentleman Li, there's one aspect to Superheroism that he hasn't quite mastered:  A way with women.  Can Barrel Man summon his villain-crushing courage to ask his favorite coffee shop cutie out on a date?  And when a new SuperVillain threatens to take over the city, can Barrel Man set aside his personal life long enough to save the day?

TDAROBAS is a tribute to all those theater artists who work tirelessly to pursue their passion.  While some hope to gain fame and notoriety, others make personal sacrifices, all with the hope that their work will make the world a better place.

TDAROBAS was developed with support from The Playwrights' Center (Mpls) and Second Generation (NY).
