This project explores the themes of memento, memory and travel, as embodied by the roadtrip souvenir. Our piece will take place in the vehicles of participants of HDTS 2013 as they traverse the desert landscape between Joshua Tree, CA and Albuquerque, NM. Viewers will collect a fragrant object from each of our sites along the route and hang them from their rear view mirror, ultimately creating a composite souvenir of the experience.
Since the HDTS 2013 program is a series of art events and installations that viewers will travel between, we want to involve the viewer in our piece during the time between other artists’ works. We will do that by creating small parallel HDTS sites where travelers can pick up a hanging, souvenir object. These objects will be unique to each site and carry a distinct fragrant note - a sensory reminder of that place and the overall experience.
9 SOUVENIR SITES:
Gold Dinosaurs, Joshua Tree, CA
Wonder Valley Weigh Station, Wonder Valley, CA
The Palms Restaurant, Wonder Valley, CA
Hilltop Motel lobby, Kingman, AZ
Don's Yard Sale, Cleator, AZ
Arcosanti, airport model alcove, Arcosanti, AZ
El Rancho Hotel, Gallup, NM
Mana Mart / Burial Grounds, Las Lunas, NM
Octopus Car Wash / Tradewinds Sign Rally, Albuquerque, NM
As the event progresses and participants visit a selection of our sites, the souvenirs will amass and form a kind of sculpture in the traveler's vehicle, with both the scents and objects blending into a layered, composite piece. Additionally, Julia is creating a fragrance that extends the Souvenir experience. It will reference and build upon the scent notes of our collective souvenirs and will remind the recipient of their journey through the desert.
Matt and I are working out of Portland, Oregon. Some of the money from this Kickstarter campaign will fund our travel and materials costs. This includes airfare, lodging, transportation and the production of souvenir sculptures.
Our project blog has been a useful source for sharing ideas. In addition, we are creating a site-specific Google map with hyperlinks to lead viewers on their drive. Stay tuned.
