The First Mini-Film
The official Artist Showcases will be more in-depth, but I really enjoy catching even a little snippet of the stories behind the creators I encounter. This is Pimkool, a lacquerware artist I met in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Stay tuned as I am about to release a short interview with a woodcarver who had a stall a few feet down the market from her. Yay!!
Imagine if your favorite television shows about travel, dance and musical talent, or even culinary skills sent you a box full of the items the contestants or hosts created or featured onscreen! Well, this is that. As I travel the world, a lot of people say they wish they could tag along with me. Now you can! This is your opportunity to travel the world without leaving home, no passport required.
In addition to photos and films, each segment of the project is connected to a series of Terra Trunks, or mystery boxes packed full of elements from a featured culture somewhere around the world. All 5 senses are covered to give you an immersive experience and to draw you into the marketplaces, luthier workshops, ceramic studios and living rooms of creators abroad.
Discover incredible places, meet amazing people, and take the experience home.
Not only is this campaign live and running, but also each of the rewards are things they you will hopefully love. There are favorites from DanDannDesigns, some of my music, and even an opportunity to physically travel with me.
There are ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT!!!
Please, take a moment to support the campaign if you have the means. And again, whether or not you have a dollar ready at the moment, if you could the links with your network, I would be incredibly grateful.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about and share this fun project!

What is the Project
How would you like to receive a mystery box packed full of handmade crafts, cultural artifacts, and other treasures designed to transport you to a different region of the world?
Each month, we will highlight theme or an aspect of art, dance and other creative media and use it as a portal through which to learn more about a world culture. Instead of taking what the news gives us, verbatim, we take a peek into what life is really like in the Middle East, in Asia, in Eastern Europe and so forth, through the eyes of the artists who live there.
The project has 3 parts: Terra Trunks, Terra Challenges, and Terra Films.
What Are Terra Trunks?
Terra Trunks are collections of art, items, and objects, placed in a box, and shipped to you. Each trunk is a unique delight, packed with as many interesting local delights as I can fit, and designed to engage the five senses for an immersive experience. While the contents of Terra Trunks are a mystery, you can find clues from the themes and the films. Trunks will likely include handmade pieces from the artists who are showcased, for example. They may also contain stunning crafts from local market artisans, freeze-dried tastes of local fruits, recipes from local chefs, and other fun surprises. Terra Trunks are a bit like ‘time capsules,’ capturing a touch of what life is really like in a place, at that moment.
Terra Trunks are not something you simply purchase; they are an artistic and cultural immersion. We make an effort to forgo general, 'mass produced trinkets' or tourist-fare, preferring to offer treasure chests, filled with local, handmade crafts and creations that convey the stories that the artists are trying to tell. Each Terra Trunk is designed to pull you into the stories, and with multiple methods of acquiring a Terra Trunk, you can participate however you wish.
There are 4 ways to get your hands on a Terra Trunk:
- By purchasing a Market Terra Trunk
- By selecting one from the Backer Rewards
- By winning a Terra Auction
- By winning a Terra Challenge
A series of Market Terra Trunks will also be available for purchase--first come first served--and will be filled with local craft market treasures from artisans who can comfortably deliver larger volumes of their work. These are the same style that are available as Backer Rewards.
The winners of the Terra Auctions will receive more customized Terra Trunks. For example, hand embroidered sneakers in a specific size. The auctions also open the door for people interested in collecting some of the heavier, or higher priced awe-inspiring crafts I discover.
The winners of the Terra Challenges will receive Terra Trunks with items that are more specific to the films. For example, if one month's film showcases a Peruvian wood carver, some of the meaningful pieces he displays may be in the Terra Trunks.
In addition to the series of Terra Trunks, each month, I will release an artistic challenge related to the theme we highlight, inviting you to exercise your own creative skills and engage with us. Terra Challenges may call you to practice film, photography, songwriting, dance, acting, food preparation, painting, carving, sewing, etc. The goal is to convince you to take a break from the stresses of this time in history and to play. Prizes for each challenge will include Terra Trunks and occasionally other mysterious rewards.
To further immerse us in the regional culture and experience, each month, I will release a film or series of films (via accessible platforms like YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook) showcasing interesting destinations and creators around the world. Through these films, you will get to meet local storytellers who use a creative medium to talk about what life is really like for them, what inspires them, and what they care about. One month, you could experience life through the eyes of an eclectic sculptor in the hidden corners of Ethiopia and get a sample of the designs that helped him protect his cultural heritage from extinction. In another month, you could learn how a Costa Rican craftsman creates otherworldly sounding guitars from 500 year old rail posts and how his skill ties deeply into his understanding of Hebrew tradition.
This is not what the news chooses to show us. This is a peek into what local storytellers actually experience as life.
This project breaks the rules of acceptable society, and violates the premise that success and value can be achieved by destruction--fear people with different languages, cultures and races; step on a few toes if you want to get to the top; beauty can only be found in the faces of the rich and powerful; and, the ends justify the means.
We are here to control our own narratives. To learn about the world through the eyes of the people actually living in it. To tell our own stories, through arts. Why the arts? Art, music, food and dance are well known for their abilities to transcend language. In this global atmosphere where fear, pain, illusion, and disillusion appear to be taking over, we defiantly fight to dissolve these barriers with our stories, our songs, our dance, our brushes, our crayons, …and our mangoes.
My name is DanDann. I am a first-generation Jamaican-American, social entrepreneur, traveling multidisciplinary artist and the woman behind DanDannDesigns. I have a great passion for learning about other cultures, languages and beliefs. I want to to understand why people do and believe what they do and believe. Whenever I discover something that I find interesting, my first instinct is to share it as widely as I can. I want others to have the opportunity to share in my discoveries. This platform serves as a vehicle through which I can begin to share my experience. The audio-visual of the films, the tangibility of the Terra Trunks, and the interaction of the Terra Challenges allow me to bring you along, and to set you squarely in the middle of the stories as the unveil all around you.
The potential for connection and mutual inspiration fuels my eagerness to discover, craft and curate stories through art, music, dance, film, writing, play and culinary arts around the world. I view this project as an opportunity to strengthen the vitality, equity and unity of the global community of creative people.
Where My Journeys Take Me
In 2017, I have been through Brooklyn, New York; Austin, Texas; Valencia, Spain; Marrakesh & Essaouira, Morocco; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Chiang Mai, Thailand, and before the year is out I will wander briefly through Paris and, hopefully, will get to visit Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Wales, before returning home ...to plan my next adventure.
The backer rewards are projected to arrive within 6 months. Note, however, that some rewards will begin rolling out as soon the campaign is completed.
The first official showcase video, and the associated Terra Challenge, is slated for release in the first week of March 2018, with the first series of official Terra Trunks being shipped by the first week of April.
While the films enable you to meet real people and discover incredible places, the challenges help you explore and share your own creative talents, as well as add to the archive of stories from around the globe. With Terra Trunks, you are then able to add tangible pieces of the journey to your own personal collection. Together, we are illustrating the reality of our shared individual experiences of life on this planet, through the limitless nature of our imaginations and creativity. Together, we can shift how we, as a collective planet, are portrayed. We endeavor to turn off fear-based news, take a true and honest look into the eyes and hearts of people in distant places around the world and prove that there is beauty and goodness in every corner of our world. Fear is not the real story. WE are the story.
Want an individual item or something different? Ask me, and I will create a custom reward level for you.
As a thank you for supporting this campaign, I have chosen a few of my favorite pieces from DanDannDesigns to share with you. Also, some of you have been asking for music by DanDann for almost 10 years. Here’s a chance to get a little taste and to whet your appetite.
By popular demand, I am also including a chance to receive the first series of Terra Trunks. While the Terra Trunks for challenge and auction winners will be more personalized and linked to showcased artists, Terra Trunks for the backer rewards will lean more on local street market vendors who can easily accommodate the higher demand.
Another highly requested reward was the option to physically join me and my little caravan on our journey around the world. Come co-work alongside us, or work with me, helping me introduce amazing artists, discover beautiful spaces, and curate delicious- I mean delightful gifts for Terra Trunks. If you’ve ever needed an excuse to wander the earth, this is the reward for you.
Each of the rewards from DanDannDesigns will be made and sent from Austin, Texas using USPS in order to keep the pricing low. The Terra Trunks will be shipped from Thailand, likely using DHL. If you would prefer a different shipping method, please let me know.
A portion of the proceeds from this campaign, as well as all future endeavors, will go toward supporting an organization (Non-profit, NGO, Fair Trade Organization, Sustainability Endeavor) that is striving to help people around the world explore their creative selves. For this project, I have chosen to use 10% of the funding to support Local Women’s Handicrafts (http://www.lwhnepal.com), a fair trade organization based in Nepal that seeks to train and employ local women in a variety of artistic skills, including design, sewing, weaving, embroidery, knitting, jewelry making, pattern work and more. Based in Nepal, they are currently recovering from the large-scale fatal flooding that recently affected their region. The proceeds from our joint endeavors will serve to help them unearth and rebuild their facilities.
To learn more about their flood relief efforts, check out www.lwhnepal.com To learn how to help them build a learning center, check out www.locwom.org.
Thank you, each of you, for helping us launch this global endeavor. There is no ceiling on the potential impact of this collaboration, this effort to traverse barriers and understand one another. Do not underestimate the value of your contribution. This is our story. Thank you for being a part of it. Now let’s get started! Choose a backer reward level, make a contribution, share this campaign, and let’s take back our narrative!
Now, lemme grab the megaphone....
Thanks and Muchest of Love to Claire, Janus, Anderson, Wanda, Traci, Danny, Helen, Daniel, WILLIAM, Molly, Katreece, Adam, Peter, Shayne, Roland, Carmen, Csongor, Kit, Gillian, Carlos, Kiko, Mary Clare, Poo, Pa, Ma and everyone else who helped me get this thing rolling. These are the people who constantly inspire me, occasionally help me, frequently feed me, periodically slap me (thanks buddy), and generally help me to feel like I am surrounded by family. To each one of you, I say “Thank you, thank you, thank you, I could not possibly thank you enough. I love you, I’m sorry for annoying you, and I would likely be hiding under my bed watching Netflix (still) without you. Thank you.”
I would also like to give a loud shout out to a SMALL handful of my homies in ATX who helped me build the confidence to launch, and supported me through my first wobbly endeavors:
Cool Beans Hong Kong Supermarket
Rabbit Food Grocery

I have set the target date for the first film at March 2018 and for the distribution of rewards at May 2018 in order to buy some time. Too often I see Kickstarters promise quick delivery, only to encounter unforeseen snags. I would rather deliver early, than annoy backers with yet another late delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
