Why I'm excited about this project
This writing process was a return to how I began writing songs - by living alongside close friends and writing about what was going on in all of our lives. It was an important process for me, but I am most excited about recording and finishing this record so I can share it with all of you!
I've taken several years to write these new songs, and some of them I even started way back in the Wild Sweet Orange days. The songs cover a lot of themes such as marriage, divorce, forgiveness, and all of the beautiful and challenging aspects of relationships. My friends Sanders Bohlke and Brad Odum contributed a lot of their talents to several of the songs. I spent a lot of time in Nashville working with them, and did most of the rest of the writing in the tiniest bedroom ever in Highland Park in Birmingham.
I love writing songs, and I have always done my best work when collaborating with others. Another important person who has contributed to the new songs is Juan Solorzano. Juan has helped me write and complete many of these songs, and I am incredibly excited that he has agreed to produce the record. Juan has worked on a ton of projects with all sorts of talented artists in Nashville (he is an incredible guitarist among other things). If this campaign is successful, we are planning to begin recording at Juan's home studio in January. I am eager to continue working with Juan to see where he takes these songs. He has already brought a lot of new sounds and creativity to my music, so you can be sure the final project will be something special.
We have a ton of rewards to choose from at all different prices, from a simple digital pre-order, to t-shirts, to candles made by my friend Jake at Great Bear Wax Co (I will be pouring these candles with Jake!). Artists Ashley Wingo and MaryGrace Wolnski have contributed some artwork as rewards. You can book me and my band for a house show, or even get your name featured in the album credits. All rewards of $15 or more come with a polaroid of some part of this process, whether tuning a guitar, taking a coffee break, mailing out rewards, or just hanging out in the studio or at home in between working. Each of you are a huge part of this project, and we want you to really feel like it. The goal is to raise $12,000 to complete the project. Here's a rough breakdown of what the pledges will go towards:
- $8,000 - This covers recording, mixing, mastering, paying Juan the producer, and paying musicians.
- $2,500 - Production and distribution of all merch, as well as shipping and production costs related to the Kickstarter rewards.
- $800 - Album and merch design
- $700 - Miscellaneous expenses including gas and meals for the band during recording.
I am committed to investing as much of my personal time, money, and energy to make this the best record possible. I would be honored if you would join me in this journey.
