What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

Comfort

As professional Mac operators, we have millions of mouse clicks under our belt, we know how important comfort is. The Magic Mouse has always been a puzzle to us. Functionally it shines, ergonomically it doesn’t. The compromise between aesthetics and comfort led us to search for a solution that balance both.

Balance

There’s a fine line between comfort and aesthetics. Balancing both is hard, but not impossible. The shape is minimal and natural, to compliment the current aesthetics. Still adding enough form to make it more comfortable.

Material

Handmade from retired apple tree wood in Norway. When apple trees get to a certain point in life it ceases to produce fruits. It's then common to replace these with new ones to continue a fruitful harvest.

Production

The magic happens in Stians workshop, where the wood is first dried and then carefully carved into comfortable shapes that fits your palm.

Rewards

By backing this project, you will be rewarded with millions of comfortable clicks. There are rewards for everyone, both solo or studio.

Click

The 150.000 a year click reference in the video is from research done by Prof. Fenian at Cornell University. On average, a person makes about 428 clicks per day. (This reference is unconfirmed). As professionals however, the click amount is probably a lot higher.

Risks and challenges

All projects come with risks and challenges, handmade products from retired apple tree wood is no different.

The black base you see in the prototype is currently made of clay. When moving into production this will be replaced with silicon. We are currently working on the best solution to this and testing out different silicon types. Manufacturing will most likely start shortly after the campaign has ended.
We are also already working on tracking down retired apple trees that needs to be replaced, but the amount heavily depends on the response from this campaign.

We will do everything we can to minimize any risks and let you know if anything changes in the production plan.
